Sadly physical discipline, even by parents who are otherwise warm and loving, can lead to more misbehavior and mental health problems in children. Research shows that harsh verbal discipline, which becomes more common as children get older, may lead to more behavior problems and symptoms of depression in teens. It will also increase the chances of the person getting violent in the future.

I feel like people in the comments have such a shallow view of discipline. If you don't upset children ever when you're disciplining them then i wonder if you actually were disciplining them at all, or if there was a need to. I think you are thinking of whole different scenarios.

    • @alohomoratarot
      @alohomoratarot Год назад +25

@@kenz2756 If anyone genuinely believes that publicly, intentionally breaking an item that THEY initially bought for a child is okay, then THAT is where the shallow view of discipline resides. It's not discipline. It's severe anger problems that need to properly be addressed in a safe environment, free of public ridicule.
There's a fine line between "I'm taking away your device for a while, because I think your behavior is unnecessary", and "I'm taking your item away, destroying it, sharing it and your reaction online, for the world to see and collectively make fun of-by the way, you're such an ungrateful child for being upset about me destroying something that I knew would make you very happy. Shut up and smile for the camera and stop making me look like a bad parent, willl ya?!"
Unless I'm just a complete dumbass, this is clearly what Lenarr is trying to portray-the completely irrational and abusive logic of such parents with such power.
We as a society certainly need to reconsider our understanding of children's behavior. And even more so, we need to reconsider how our own reactions and behavior can imapct their emotional and mental health in a world that is increasingly functioning on the existence of social media.

At 14 I imagined escaping them.
      At 16 I started trying.
I ran away from home, was gone for 2 weeks until they found me and drug me home.
At 17 I did it again and again, was NEVER coming back. They found me and they and several of my aunts and uncles convinced me to come back home.
My aunts and uncles sat round a table with me and my parents and heard the entire story.
Then my parents asked to talk to them without me.
That went on for an hour.
After which I came home and they never talked about it again. Meaning, my aunts and uncles definitely didn't tell them it wasn't THEIR fault.
My folks sent me off to a psychologist. 2 months later, he asked to start seeing me, WITH THEM, at which point he started trying to explain to them that how they treated me would only drive me away, and really wasn't necessary.
They fired that guy and hired another shrink.
Same process repeated. Once he told them it was definitely not all MY fault, they fired THAT guy and told me - no more shrinks, I needed to go back to taking Ritalin(they loved Ritalin, it turned me into this Compliant Little Zombie With NO Personality Of My Own). I hid the pills for months until I was 18. They never knew I wasn't taking it.
I joined the military and about 2 years in, I came home on leave. I was going to be home for a week. My Dad had waited for me to come home, because he could save $300-400 by having me help him REPLACE THE ENTIRE ROOF. ON MY WEEK OFF.
I actually went up on the first day and started helping, but it was the same old shit. Him barking orders at me, him arguing with me over shit where if he did it his way, the roof would have leaked like a seive... etc. I just went down to the living room and started watching TV.
10 minutes later he realized I had been on 'BREAK' too long and came to get me to tell me to get back to WORK.
I told him HERE IS HOW ITS GONNA GO. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT.
'You can either start treating me like a GROWN MAN who you RESPECT, and NEVER talk to me like your little slave or puppet or soldier again, or I will go back to base, get a change of duty station, move to a new state, change my phone number, never send you my address, and JUST THAT EASY, NEITHER OF YOU WILL EVER SEE ME AGAIN'.
Me and my Dad went fishing that afternoon.
He hired someone to finish the roof replacement.
Our relationship got better. He's still an old curmudgeon, but he doesn't imagine that he can just tread on me anymore. Which was good enough for us eventually become kind of friends again.
My mother, she's UNFIXABLE. She thinks every single person she has ever met is there to do literally everything for her. I've never met someone so lazy. She won't feed herself if she can get someone to do it. She just doesn't care what anyone thinks. So I literally just never talk to her unless I HAVE TO, and she no longer really has a Son.
      Works just FINE for me.

I remember of my own childhood/ teen years and when I had to discipline the kids of my host family during my au par year, that it's so much more effective and efficient when you calmly explain kids why their behaviour wasn't ok and how to do it better next time. I always felt more bad about my behaviour when getting these calm talks because it made sense and made me think about the things I did. Screaming at kids or even hitting makes then only being afraid of getting yelled at or being hit. And *not* because of doing things that aren't ok. Kids aren't dumb. You only need to explain it to them in a way that they understand.

Beating and hitting is pain compliance! Pain compliance is used to correct terrible behavior. If a parent beat or hit a child who is behaving themselves, that's abuse because the child didn't do anything to deserve that. However, if the child is misbehaving and continues to misbehave after the patent attempt to correct the child's negative behavior, then pain compliance needs to be applied!

@@roythousand13 babes let’s put on our thinking caps. If you keep doing something and get the same result, shouldn’t you do something else? 😬 People have been beating their children for generations and to this day children are still misbehaving. 🙄. It’s almost like it doesn’t do anything. 🤭

    • @roythousand13

@madewhole ,children misbehave, and parents used both physical discipline, e.g., asswhooping and other punishments, e.g., "No games for a week, or no going out with friends after school." Most children grow out learn from it. Some don't! That doesn't mean parents stop disciplining their children when the children misbehave. How else will the child learn that misbehaving is not acceptable. Your comment is like saying, "Criminals have been sent prison for years for doing crimes. But they continue to commit crimes, so we should stop sending them to prison!."

I’m glad people are finally talking about those game console destroying parents that were trendy in 2017-18. That kind of destructive behaviour is so childish and concerning, and those same parents wonder why once their children move out they never visit
