    Dear Alice, your channel is so authentic and useful, that's why I always look forward to you uploading a new video I always learn from your videos it's never been a waste of time. I never understood the the point behind putting a misleading clickbait to get more views. This video was really helpful, you broke things down so thank you. Just to double check so have you ended up uploading two CV's in the application ? (I love how much you love Lancaster!)♡

      thank you nour, you're so lovely 💖💖💖💖💖 hope you're having a lovely summer, and enjoying the post-internship freedom! 😁 so I did end up using a different CV for oxford and cambridge even though the two courses I applied for were virtually identical, but that was only because cambridge used rolling admissions and oxford used gathered field admissions so I applied to cambridge a couple of months earlier, and by the time I was finishing off my application for oxford I had a couple of extra things I wanted to add (a prize and a christmas internship - with rob young as well coincidentally!) x

      @@alicedoesphysics Yeah... I'm starting my third year in a month. Just one question: how important is research experience for that MSc in particular? Unfortunately I've only had 1 summer of research experience with a professor of mine, so i'm not quite sure if it's worth applying.

      @@fisikalectures597 I heard that you can convert a 10 unit subject into dissertation (for Oxford). I guess that maybe count as 'research experience'.

    Thank you so much for uploading this video - I watched it when it came out but didn't think it was something I planned on doing (It wasn't that I thought I was getting into Oxbridge, more that I thought I wouldn't have the marks at undergraduate for it). However, I found out on Thursday despite getting 4A*s at A level I missed my STEP grades for Maths at Cambridge, so knowing that if I still feel the course fits with what I'm enjoying I might stand a chance at getting in for postgrad has helped a bit I think (I am waiting on a remark of a step paper for confirmation, but I'm pretty certain I won't get into Cambridge). I'd never really considered that I could apply to Oxbridge for postgraduate study, and thought if I didn't get in at undergraduate I'd 'missed the boat' and simply wasn't good enough to ever study there. These are all hypotheticals at the moment as I don't know if I'd be interested in going into research or not in 2 years, but thank you for making this video to put it out there that the option is open and it's not impossible just because you didn't get in at first (whether you applied or not).

    • @alicedoesphysics
      @alicedoesphysics  5 лет назад

      Hey Anna, I'm really sorry to hear that STEP didn't go to plan - I hope you've still managed to be proud of your achievements, because 4 A*s is truly incredible ❤️❤️❤️ Hope there's been some good news, but either way, honestly when you apply at 18 and when you apply at 21 you're a very different person applying for a very different kind of course, so there's kind of no correlation between undergrad and postgrad admissions - it's definitely an option if you find you still want to go 😁 Will keep my fingers crossed that the STEP remark went well, but wherever you end up going for undergrad I'm sure you'll do fantastically x

      I see that the offer was made on 18th of March 2019. May I know when did you apply for the MSc?

    Hi Alice! I’m a little late to the club but I want to say thank you so much for making this video, and best of luck for your graduate studies. In all the clusters of RUclips videos and advice articles on applying to Oxbridge on the Internet, almost none of them are geared towards postgrad. So your experience and resources are so helpful! You might not know the answer to this, but do you think the admissions people for Oxbridge are as strict on applications obtaining 1st class degrees as in undergrad? I really want to apply next year but am worried I’ll finish with a high 2:1 instead of a 1st 😔

    I'm a bit worried about applying outside of London because I'm worried about living costs. What advice do you have for that?

    • @alicedoesphysics

      thank you so much! ❤️ ah I'm assuming you currently live in london then and would otherwise commute from home? I linked to both uni's fees, funding and scholarships search in the description, but there are also postgrad loans (www.gov.uk/masters-loan and www.gov.uk/doctoral-loan), as well as saving from part-time jobs / holiday jobs during undergrad (although obviously, that's not always possible) - I know it's common to take a year out working first too 😊 x

    • @nathanholt3821
      @nathanholt3821 5 лет назад +1

      Also as a suggestion for a video you could make is "what I wish I knew before I applied" or "what I wish I had done differently". Typical things like that mabye

    • @alicedoesphysics
      @alicedoesphysics  5 лет назад +1

      oh right, that makes sense! I'm afraid I can't find a link to either uni's website to back me up as it's been a while since I applied, but the impression I got (at least for my courses) was that they cared a lot about the content of your degree and whether that aligned with what they'd expect someone applying from within oxford / cambridge respectively to have covered, but they didn't care where you'd done it 😊 also those are really good suggestions - thank you a lot!! x

    Hi Alice,
    Just wondering the reason you applied for a MSc as opposed to a Mphil (which as I understand has the Msc courses incorporated in it?). And can you talk a bit about the difference between these two? Many thanks!

    • @alicedoesphysics
      @alicedoesphysics  4 года назад

      hey, from chatting to people at oxford (not looked into this in depth!) I believe it is true for other (mostly humanities?) subjects that you can do a one year MA or a two year MPhil which incorporates the MA and an additional research year, but that's not the case for physics at all (and oxford does not even offer a research master's in physics - cambridge do I believe, but not in my subject, which is theoretical physics) so I didn't have to make the decision - sorry that I can't be more helpful 😢 x

    • @wan3839
      @wan3839 4 года назад

      Hi Alice, thanks so much for the reply! Also I was stupid, I meant to say DPhil :( (www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/courses/dphil-theoretical-physics?wssl=1), which I suppose is the equivalence of a PhD. So I guess this is what you might do after your Msc?
      But DPhil and Msc seem to have the same entry requirement, so someone who has completed their Honours degree appears to be eligible to apply to either Msc or Dphil, which is why I'm a bit confused. But if I apply for Oxford I think I'll do what you did and apply for Msc!

    • @alicedoesphysics
      @alicedoesphysics  4 года назад +2

      ah okay - sorry that I didn't realise that! yes, the DPhil is the same as a PhD, just the oxford word for it 😊 so actually the entrance requirements aren't the same - the MSc wants you to have a BSc-equivalent (a three year degree in the UK), whereas to get onto the DPhil you need an MSci/Phys-equivalent (in the UK that's either a three year degree + a one year MSc OR a 4 year degree, so in either case an extra year of study) - hope makes sense x

    I just wanted to ask you something if it’s not a problem? So, I’m starting Physics at Lancaster this October (I already have my place, I’ve just had a year off), and I just wanted to ask you if you have any tips for basically keeping up with work at Uni?
    I do work very hard, though even at A Level, although I came out with grades I was happy with, I did struggle to keep up with what we were learning in class, as it takes me a LOT longer to read and process things than all of the other people in my class. Hence I basically worked “too hard” which I really don’t want to do at Uni.
    As much as I am really really excited to be starting I am a little nervous that I may not be able to keep up with lecture notes etc (like when you said in one of your videos you didn’t manage to keep up with them), so I’m just wondering if you have found any ways to be really efficient with what you’re learning?
    Also, because of this worry about not keeping up that I’m having, I’m struggling to decide which degree scheme I would like to do. Basically, I would like to do theoretical as I love looking at the more mathematical side of things, but because there is a lot less coursework involved and (I assume?) more content to learn than in say the experimental degree scheme, I feel that it could get quite stressful around exam period.
    I’m having a bit of a dilemma between them. Did you get the impression that theoretical was harder than experimental and did you find exam season really difficult?
    Sorry this is a really long comment (more like a letter!) and don’t worry if you don’t worry if you can’t answer, I’ve just always found your advice so helpful and I’m just wondering if you learned any of these things through your experience.
    Thanks a lot! I’m really looking forward to your future videos! :)xx

      Hey Lawrence! 😁 First off just wanted to say sorry for how long it's taken me to get up-to-date with answering comments - I hope you've not been worrying about things too much 😢 Ahahah thank you, I'm really glad you found that funny, wasn't sure if it was too cringey 😅 Congrats on getting into Lancaster!!
      So with the workload, completely honestly I felt exactly the same as you at sixth form and was worried about university for the same reason (which I think is quite common, definitely not just us!). The pace is definitely quick but I promise you will be able to keep up with it, and remember Lancaster has shorter terms than the majority of unis (10 weeks) and longer holidays (4 weeks), so there's a break after each term to revise which is when I've always found things actually go in. The best way I've found to keep with stuff at Lancaster is just to properly try with all the worksheets, as by doing the worksheets as best you can you look through all the slides anyway, so even if you haven't made notes on a particular section you often remember a lot of it when it comes to revision anyway - hope that makes sense?
      Degree-scheme-wise, you'll get an Academic Advisor assigned to you (a lecturer who kind of looks after you and you go to for advice) when you start and they should help chat with you about the different degree schemes etc, but honestly it's not something you need to have sorted out for a while (I came in on a different degree scheme to the one I eventually picked!) 😁 First year and the first term of second year is the same for everyone, so you only need to decide before Christmas of second year, and they'll put on loads of talks and stuff to help you choose between them at the end of first year / start of second year too 😊 But personally I would always advocate going for the degree scheme you find most interesting, as in the long run that will work out easier anyway rather than forcing yourself through something just because it has fewer exams or whatever - so honestly to me it sounds like you're making the right choice with Theoretical 😁
      Don't worry, I love talking to people who are about to come to Lancaster!! Hope packing and everything is going well for you, and that you're looking forward to fresher's week 😁 xx

    Hey Alice. It's refreshing to see that your title didn't start with 'How to get in... ' 😂. Good content as usual. I know this is kind of far ahead, but would you like to be a professor, or would you prefer to eventually go into industry?
    By the way, did you colour coordinate your pillows and top on purpose? 😂

      @alicedoesphysics  5 лет назад

      hey joel, thank you - nice to know it's not just me that gets annoyed by those 😂 so, I'm not entirely sure! I'm fairly certain I'd like to go into research of some form and directly use the physics I've learnt, which is why I applied for these master's, but I don't know if I'd rather work in industry (I think this is what I'm leaning towards) or in a uni - sorry, I know that's not helpful! ahaha no, I didn't intentionally colour coordinate (but I feel like this top could coordinate with a lot of things! 😂) x

    I'm Giusy, an Italian student with the dream of going to study in Cambridge. I am currently finishing the exams of Psychology's bachelor at LUMSA (An private university in Rome) and I would really like to join Cambridge to study the Master in Neurosciences.
    Before my application on UCAS, I'm writing to enquire about if my preparation as an International student would be sufficient for a conditional offer of admission (because I'm still studying so I'm not finished yet: my International qualification for now is about 107/110 Laurea but it will increase once I will graduate. But I don't know and I'm not sure if I could be considered like a candidate student to the entry requirements for Cambridge ). My English requirement is CAE, score B.

    Hi,
    I wanted to ask what your offer was for your postgraduate and what grade did you end up graduating with? I have received an offer to study MPhil in Economics at Cambridge but the offer was pretty steep. They’re asking for 85% (not sure if it’s for each module or just the whole of 3rd year, it wasn’t too clear).
    In all honesty, I’m not sure I can meet their offer and I am worried that they are not lenient. Any advice or tips would be great!
    Thanks.

    However, I have another question about the IELTS certificate which I couldn't get it because it costs too high fee,

    Hey Alice,
    I've been interested in this course called MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing, now all I want to know is how many years of prior education is required for this course?
    For ex, many universities in the US require 16 years of prior education for masters but I was wondering if it was the same for UK universities as my bachelor's course is just a 3 years course, which means that I would have only 15 years of prior education whilst applying for the course. Is that going to be enough? Also I would be an international student, so if you could clear this up for me it would be of great help.
    Cheers!

    Hi! I'm an international student and will be applying next year to a 1 year master's (statistics/math) course. I just wanted to know if Oxbridge has a "need aware/ need blind" approach like American universities? Basically would it lower my chances of getting in if I apply for financial aid?

    • @alicedoesphysics
      @alicedoesphysics  4 года назад

      err I don't really know what "need aware" means, sorry! 😅 but (sorry if this isn't what you're actually asking!) UK universities don't have any idea at all about your financial situation until they've decided whether or not to give you an offer (once you have an offer, you then have to prove that you can afford to take it up before they let you start, through whatever combination of scholarships / savings / sponsorships / loans) - and applying for scholarships (I'm pretty sure we don't have "financial aid" like in the US, unless this just means scholarships?) is treated entirely separately i.e. won't have any effect on how likely you are or not to get an offer x

    Something that struck me as odd was the date on your offer letter from Oxford. Perhaps it was different last year but the deadline for your course is currently January 24, and the same goes for many similar courses I've looked at. March 18 just seems quite late to hear back from them. What was the deadline for you? When did you submit your application?

    • @alicedoesphysics
      @alicedoesphysics  5 лет назад +1

      yes the deadline for the MSc was in January (I honestly don't remember the exact date), but both Oxford for the MSc and Cambridge for the MASt don't give out offers until March 🤷‍♀️ my Oxford offer was in the first batch of offers
