  • Vines can be a great way to bring vertical interest to your yard and garden. The vines in this video also attract pollinators and provide a beautiful scent to your garden. Flowering vines can also be very attractive additions to cut flower arrangements.
I grow flowers and vegetables in Saskatchewan, Canada. My cold hardiness zone is zone 4. I have an average of 110 frost free growing days each year. The past few years have seen our temperatures go as low as -37C (-34.6F) to as high as 37C (98.6F). Come see what and how I grow in these conditions.

I grow Firecracker Vine/Spanish Flag every year and have never nicked them. I just soak them overnight in warm water (in one of my kids old thermos). They sprout in days on a heat mat after that. Some even sprout while soaking. They’re gorgeous especially late in the summer. Definitely full sun. Best of luck, PrairiePlantGirl!

Hi, for sweet peas, i like to pre-sprout them in damp paper towels in a plastic bag. This way, the 'duds' are easier to cull,. This year, it took only two days for sprouts to peak out. Happy gardening!

I have been saving the tubes from toilet paper rolls. I plan to use them as deep, individual planters for my climbing sweet peas in hope that they will be easy to transplant into the ground without disturbing the roots too much. I will do the same thing with my pole beans.

Hi ! I have also grown the Firecracker vine . I didn’t know that they needed scraping...mine did fine without it.
I started mine by presprouting them on a damp paper towel in a plastic bag and then into a 6 pack to grow a few more roots.
Pre sprouting is a great method for all sorts of seeds...and you can see which seeds are duds
Happy growing ! Thanks for the videos

I have had a few people say they don’t nick the seed and it germinates well. I will try to remember that for next year. They do seem to be germinating for me.

I started sweetpeas for the first time, the blue kind. All the seeds have come up, need to trasnplant out soon. We have a cold night on Wednesday, so probably after that.

Most of those anemones (Blanda variety) that I planted last fall, for the first time, didn't survive the winter, even though it was unusually mild for Ontario standards. Only about 20% are growing/blooming. I love their blue colour. I will buy some more this fall and start them indoors in early spring same as you do. Do you have the Blanda variety? And do they multiply for you?

I do not have any. Until this year I have been classified in a growing zone too cold to overwinter them outdoors.

I reserve root trainers for my beans, I find they are so messy to use, even when I have the proper kit.

I considered using them for beans, but I usually direct sow my beans.
