God bless you sir, I've been welding for 20 years and alot of experienced welders take joy in watching beginners struggle. it's takes men to show boys what manhood is. I've always been one to help and I really believe that is one of the things that set the best apart from the job scared guys. Love to see anyone get better at their craft. Your awesome brother

Hank Jr I agree ! When I started welding a Missouri Drydocks back in the middle 70’s there where some guys that would show you a few tricks but most of the would not show me little tricks of the trade to help me get to journeyman and it took me years to get there so when I got there I began teaching the new guys as soon as they hired on and most all them became journeyman in about a year or more

Hello Bob ! I'm a 70 year old disabled Vietnam vet, and have been learning welding, so I don't have to send out my work as my son and I build cars. I truly appreciate your excellent instructional videos, and my welding has improved a lot faster than I expected it to, due to the help you, and some others have published. Myself, and I'm quite sure, the other veterans who watch your videos, enjoy and learn quite a bit from the wonderful help you provide. THANK YOU !

Thanks for the video Bob, to many people think they have to buy these very expensive welding machines to TIG weld and the reality is all they need is a buzz box, argon bottle and TIG torch. I weld off my gas drive all the time, its how I learned to weld years ago. you learn arc control very quickly when you have 200- 300 feet of welding cable drug out threw a paper mill, you cannot be running back and forth to the truck to adjust amperage when your welding Stainless pipe.

    • @blakereaser6777

By buzz box do you mean AC welder only?

    • @EastCoastWoodworking
      @EastCoastWoodworking 7 лет назад +5

AC or AC/DC the younger generation will call them old fashioned transformer machines, down and dirty straight welding machines not an inverter machine. For AC on aluminum you can get a HF and your off and running. Simple and works great.

I learned how to weld with a Lincoln AC-225 back in high school. Did a bit of DC welding around the ranch with a Lincoln "Pipeliner" unit, but never really knew the difference since they both seemed to work the same for the steel pipe we were using for fencing. 20 or so years ago, I stumbled across an AC-225 on Craigslist and I've used it for a lot of things, including 200+ ft of steel picket fencing built from scratch in my backyard. There's some things that I really wish I had a TIG unit for. Is there anyway to adapt the AC-225 for TIG or must it be DC?

I must have had my old stick welder for at least 30 years and it was anything but new when I bought it. It's survived years of storage in a leaky shed and literally being stood on when it got in the way. I swear I could run a small truck over it and it would continue to work! It only goes up to 150 Amps, but that seems adequate for my needs.
Several years ago I bought an almost identical TIG torch with a view to using it to TIG alongside stick, MIG and oxy/ace. I now have no excuse to delay - other than changing my Argoshield Lite (argon/CO2/O2 blend) for pure argon. Maybe have both?
Thanks. You make it look so simple, but I think I'll find it isn't when I start; just as I did for the other methods of stitching two pieces of metal together.

I weld aluminum with a similar set up using an old Lincoln AC/DC Ideal Arc, the old 'bullet proof' last forever welder with the rounded top. To weld aluminum use 100% Argon, use copper to ball the tip of the tungsten electrode and to avoid contamination of the electrode always initiate the arc on copper placed next to the base aluminum to be welded. For copper a flattened 1" [or larger] hard copper tube coupling works well. At home I rarely weld thin aluminum, it's hard to justify spending $2K on an AC Tig welder. I also own a DC Mig with spool gun but it is best used on thick aluminum. Excellent informative video, thanks !

Gramps was a welder blacksmith, dad was a universal welder blacksmith and i was shown at 15 yrs old, now what i will share with you is out there and you dont require gases or any expensive tig rods. first you need to purchase "everdure", 1rst get carbon rod, sharpen to point same as tig, clamp in your electrode holder, DC electrode pos, and use the eveture like any tig rod. hell i made my own short box by literally cutting 18 inches out of the box and frame, i used everdure, to weld the box back together, the rods are about $4-5 last time i bought.

I wonder where I might find more info on what to get so I can try building a TIG similar to what you show in this video. I see Amazon has VERY affordable torches. I have gauges and can get a tank of Argon. Perhaps my first question would be tip diameter and shape. Also, is the connector that screws onto the torch easy to buy at a welding shop? Your attitude and knowledge about welding really impress this old guy. Thanks for the info .

Good stuff to know. I have a cheap inverter welder that works great with a stick but occasionally need TIG. I usually have to either rent or borrow a TIG machine to do 5 minutes work. This looks like a cheap and easy fix for the guy who just needs a little work done. Thanks for the advice.

Thank you for all your videos. I am just learning tig but have welded stick and mig for 20 plus years. Always wanted a tig never could bring my self to buy one as I had no real need. I wish I would of know of this years ago as would of sure used it. I assume you could even do this with a mig. I retired this year and as a gift to myself I purchased the everlast 221 that you are using. Wow what a machine. Very smooth. I came across this looking to see if there is any kind of spot weld attachment that you could use on a tig and use the 2t setting to activate it. If you know of any I would like to see it done. I am building me a little hot rod and would like to have the ability to spot weld. I know I can do plug welds and grind off as I have done that before. I also want to say thank you to our veterans for what they do. God bless

TIG welding is touchy enough with the latest equipment, but you ran some nice beads with Fred's setup. Great job. Fred is Fred Flintstone.

Funny how you have a ventilation for welding fumes, we make brackets for.
Can't name them but you know who, they make cranes as well for maximum extention on smoke vents.
I really like that fact about my workplace 😁helping welders stay healthy and cool all over the world 👍🏻🌍😘

    Navy here...
It would be pretty smart to buy a 1" x 3" thin tungsten plate or thick sheet to initiate the arc on to keep from grinding your tips as often. Just a thought.

What voltage is TIG? I know it is DC but my machine is 14.5 to 21.5 volts , my amperage is 20 to 135. I love the idea of doing this and from another veteran thanks for your support. I plan to put dinse 25 connections on my electrode and my clamp so I can run dcep flux core. By the way I have a harbor freight titanium flux 125, it's weight helps me because of my disability I am not able to lift a lot of weight around for very long and it weighs 15lbs. And I got it 1for $125. I would love to make it into a simple TIG.

Best of your videos... takes me back.
Exactly what I did so long ago I am embarrassed to say. Going to college and wanting a race car but little money. So took my old AC/DC Marquette plug and play (changed output with plug in leads), and did effectively this! Worked nice. Eventually added a High Freq. unit too. Worked well and made good welds!
