I visited the Surf Ballroom and crash site with a friend last August. Very sentimental and haunting. I fell in love with 50s/60s music as a kid and preteen in the 80s,mostly due to it was the music from a generation before and what my parents grew up with. My dad took me to see "La Bamba" in the summer of 1987 and rented "The Buddy Holly Story" on VHS for me to watch to teach me this wonderful but tragic history of early rock and roll. My dad was 13 yrs old that winter of 1959 and a huge Buddy Holly fan. In fact he was supposed to attend the Sioux City, Iowa stop of the tour just 2 nights after the fateful Clear Lake show. I will still never understand why the concert promoters had to be such cheapskates and fail to provide decent transportation and facilities for these guys. They barely had time to take showers, wash clothes, eat meals and get a decent nights sleep. No wonder Buddy was so desperate to get on the plane that night, along with Ritchie and the Big Bopper, both of whom were battling bad colds. I wish the tour manager had stepped in and told them to just get a hotel room in Mason City or Clear Lake that night then fly out the next morning. We will never know what could have been but at least we can know the 3 young stars left a great legacy of music, inspiring everyone from the Beatles to Carlos Santana. It's pretty telling that Buddy was part of the very first class inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1985, while Ritchie, the youngest member of the HoF, was inducted in 2001 alongside Michael Jackson, Queen and Aerosmith.

@scottishterrier100 bruh it's kinda common knowledge. He wasn't familiar with the gyroscope that was installed in that plane, or at least they think. That plane, if the indicator dipped below the horizon line, meant you were actually going up. It was opposite. Pilot was more familiar with the conventional ones where up was up and down was down.

@scottishterrier100 read the CAB report. That Beachcraft Bonanza had a Sperry Gyroscope that was essentially inverted from other Gyroscopes. It’s theorized that Pilot Peterson misread the Gyro and thought the plane was upside down so he rolled the aircraft to right it causing the crash.

they believe the pilot was confused with the gyroscope. the one he normally used the horizon stayed locked and the wing indicator moved. on this plane the wings were locked and the horizon moved. when the storm came in he had to use instruments only. the confusion with the different gyro caused him to mistakenly maneuver the opposite of what he needed to do. this caused him to lose altitude and crash.

    • @ernestodelaserna9494
      @ernestodelaserna9494 Год назад +1

True, except the weather in the vicinity of the airport was VFR at the time of the crash according to the CAB report. Jerry Dwyer watched the tail lights of the plane all the way to the horizon, a distance of more than 5 miles. The theory is that once the pilot got a couple miles north of the airport the lack of lights on the ground caused the pilot to use, and misread, the artificial horizon of the gyro.

Why didn't he fly them himself or get an IFR-rated pilot to do it?

A True story is Holly was developing his own record label , he left his band the crickets and was planning a new life with his recently wedded wife . He needed this winter tour to start his dream of fame and fortune , the real tragedy is it ended with the evident hurried up pace of the tour , trying to meet schedules in winter type conditions . Waylon was planned to be his first signed artist . I could really see the future as he already had wrote a few new songs , you can search to hear Buddies never performed song to remember the legend as he was at his best . I truly wish he had made a different decision that night , in his gut I can imagine their was always that feeling , just one more show to possible get a better bus , ignored the thought that everyone just can’t stand , broken promises . The report early the next morning left all with shock , it was to soon , truly broken hearts .

I personally liked Dion's take on the events that night. He was, as a headliner, offered a seat on the plane by Buddy, but turned it down. He said it wasn't the day the music died but the day the music exploded. They lost great musicians and friends that night but from that point on, Rock had its direction set. Buddy created how band lineups would be (2 guitars, bass & drums), and the big boys would write their own songs, if they were serious. John & Paul and Mick & Keith and Dylan and so many others got the "memo".

    • @pbhoulden8212

Very good question and it seems nobody can explain why. The owner of the charter flight service, Jerry Dwyer, was in charge of scheduling flights. He was actually at the airport that night and saw the flight off. But it was a huge error in judgement on his part and borderline criminal negligence in my opinion. He knew Peterson was NOT instrument rated to fly at night plus the snowstorm warning from the National Weather Service was never relayed to Peterson. Dwyer himself was older and a more experienced pilot who was instrument rated. The prudent decision would have been to scrap the flight all together that night and fly out in the morning OR for Dwyer himself to pilot the plane. I think Dwyer just wanted to make a fast buck from having 3 big rock stars pay for his flight service but in the end his negligence in my mind is part of the reason 4 young people died senselessly that night.

That information is not correct. When does not affect flight instruments. The pilot was inexperienced and the plane was not certified nor was the pilot or the charter company for instrument flight rules. Back in 1959 the type of instruments and air traffic control was not the same as it is today. The plane was a 1947 model which had some very crude instrumentation. The reason for the crash is unknown, more than likely spatial disorientation due to a lack of visual reference. Even the most experienced pilots will experience spatial disorientation if they do not know how to use or trust their instruments.

It’s misinformation that the weather somehow stopped the instruments from working properly. This was 100% pilot error, he lacked the experience needed to fly at night and read the instruments. How Bill Dwyer could have let him fly that night is beyond comprehension, to top it off Dwyer has an attitude about it and refuses to let anyone examine the plane to find new clues.

21 year old pilot (not likely professional with 5,000 flying hours+)
Left during the nighttime …crosswinds are worse at night or can be
Left during a snowstorm …. That is just plain ignorant.
We cannot know the outcomes before we take an action however they risked quite a lot in this event and at the wrong time and it cost them their lives.

For what I suggest and the footages shown the altitude meter has shown wrong heights. They flew way too low. the unreliable meters that time were sensitive for sub zero + bad visibility Peterson was unfortunately thinking he flew the correct altitude the rest is history..

windy instruments became unreliable ? no. dipped too low, a wing hit the ground technically true. pretty much a smack down full speed. pilot probably knew he was in a world of hurt just prior as seeing all black horizon.

You can get a Private Pilots License (To be able to fly solo) at 16. And a Commercial Pilots License (To be able to fly passengers) at 17. So theoretically hey could’ve had a 17 year old pilot.

@scottishterrier100 l see you are interested in the facts...do you think pilot forgot carb heat ? and iced up carb ? they did not get far and carb icing can happen fast in that weather what do you think ? maybe ? was there ever any other mention of this by safety board ? as for suggestions of fuel issue..was there any water in the fuel already had some issue...what could that have been water...and cold temps and no carb heat perhaps....things
missed or neglected in the hurry to get loaded and underway. formula for engine failure...very sad.... RIP fella's
