    Glittering magic potion bottles are a fun DIY project for Halloween that are super popular on TikTok and RUclips right now. You fill a glass vial with rubbing alcohol or water and glycerin, add in some food coloring and mica powder, give it a shake, and a color changing swirling storm appears inside. The problem is that this effect only lasts for a few seconds and we want the magic in our witch's potions to last forever.
    Grandin Road, Home Depot, and Target all sell animated crystal balls that have an automatic swirling motion, so we took our inspiration from these. The effect is surprisingly easy to create, and in this video we will teach you how to make your own swirling potion bottles.
    The mechanism is hidden inside an ancient spellbook. We show you how to make a faux leather effect in our DIY Spellbook video. ( • How to make a Spellboo... )
    These DIY potion bottles are perfect addition to your 2022 Halloween decorations! They'd fit in wonderfully with a Happy Potter, Hocus Pocus, or Witchy theme. It would even be cool for a mad scientist or wizard.

      I don't understand why you need a hole in the cover. If your magnets are strong enough they will work through the cardboard cover.
      To make the spooky automatic, you could add a foil pressure switch to the inside cover of the book. That way the weight of the bottle would connect the power to the motor and turn it on without needing to switch it on.

    • @WickedMakers
      @WickedMakers  Год назад +5

      It has to be really close to work well through the thick glass bottom.

  • @doggyspeak
    @doggyspeak Год назад +342

    fun fact: they also use magnetic stirrers in chemistry labs. You can ditch making the inside magnet its own apparatus by just getting a stir bar. Mixing plates are kinda bulky so the motorized magnet is probably the best option for hiding in props, but using an electromagnet plate can make your potion spin really fast and create little whirlpools so that could be an option.

    • @jherazob
      @jherazob Год назад +87

      Intentionally creating a whirlpool and labeling the potion appropriately ("Tornado Potion" or something, maybe in sky blue) sounds like it'd be great!

      homebrewers also use these for doing yeast starters, so if you have a homebrew shop near you, you can potentially find stir plates and stir bars. They'll be more costly than the DIY ones shown here, of course. Another way that homebrewers make their own stirplates is gluing magnets to an old computer fan's blades, if you've got any of those kicking about.

    I did a edible version of this for my kids birthday party. You get your hands on some butterfly pea flower tea and edible luster dust. I steeped the tea to make a beautiful blue color. I then made vials with instant lemonade powder with a little bit of luster dust mixed in (I called it fairy powder). The kids put the blue liquid in their flasks, and then added the lemonade powder and stirred. The deep blue turns purple from the lemonade acidity and also turns swirly from the luster dust. The end result was a basic lemonade for the kids to drink that just looked magical. I added some Hibiscus flavoring to add some exoticness to the flavor and another step, but you could end it there.

    I had a fantasy video game themed birthday party this past summer and I had drinkable glitter potions! I used edible glitter from Brew Glitter and they were great! A little goes a long way. Friend of mine is great at making drinks and he used a mix of blue and red Brew Glitter to make a concoction he dubbed "Unicorn Tears".
    This is a really neat way to have a magical glitter potion for a prop! Thanks for sharing this!

    You could add some led lights and a magnetic switch to the base unit and if you use tissue paper as a diffuser you can get rid of the food coloring. You can also use one of those remote control led lights that change color, really dress it up.

      One of the hardest things is getting the washer and quarter centered on the motor. 😂
      I did leave the cover of my book intact and simply placed the motor into the hollow of the book. Also, I used one of the chemistry stirrer magnets, then added another magnet (opposite polarity) on the opposite edge (diameter) of the quarter. That way it will spin more evenly.

    Awesome idea with the magnets. Also I think cutting the hole in the book, may have been easier if you used a holesaw. But then I guess others may feel like they couldn't do the project. Which makes since why you didn't go that route. And thanks for the awesome content.. take care

    0:57 as you were talking about how you could make it do it on it's own I immediately thought of Steve Mould's video about the Inverted Whirlpool Paradox in which he uses a magnetic mixer thing that has a long-ish magnet inside the liquid that is rotated by an external magnet on the machine he is using that stirs the liquid within! EDIT: 2:37 AND that's totally the route you go for! very nice!

    If you make the hole juuuuuust large enough, you could also rig up a low-power LED light to make the potion glow from beneath.

      The hole can extend under the page a bit so the light fits in there but doesn't enlarge the outer hole. I'd use a little electric tea light. Maybe even a flickering one.

    I havea potion cabinet I always use and set up with many jars full of curiosities.
    This would be great to have a couple that do this and then apply same to a small.cauldron with a spinning spoon and I side lit up with green.
    Thanks. You sparked many ideas.
