  • Garry Kasparov was the world chess champion for the entire decade of the 1990s. In this decade, the only human player who consistently gave him fits was Vladimir Kramnik. Today, many know Kramnik as a solid defender of the Berlin Wall, but in his younger days, he played many attacking brilliancies, including this masterpiece against the champ.
    Lessons:
    * Know the ideas behind your chess openings. The Meran Semi-Slav revolves around ...c5.
    * Don't be afraid of any opponent, even Kasparov.
    * Chess is a constant struggle for the initiative.

9:41 The reason the players missed this defense is because the wooden shield wasn't known in chess until 2020.
