This song still gives me chills, almost 50 years now. That whole album, Quadrophenia is incredible, one of the best Rock Concept albums ever. Try the Real Me off that album, great song and killer bass by the late, great John Entwhistle. Enjoy! 🎸
The Who have a lot of great albums, but "Quadrophenia" is my favorite album. It's a masterpiece! This song is special to me as it reminds me of my first girlfriend. She was wonderful, but outside events pulled us apart. After all these years I still think of her when I hear it. Roger Daltrey's vocals are so passionate they are amazing!!!

Exactly. Love like rain encompasses so many responses, and is the relief from a hard world that we yearn for...but we need to SURRENDER to it to have its full pain, joy, and glory.
A great song on it's own, but even more powerful and meaningful in the context of the "Quadrophenia" album. It should be listened to in one sitting, if possible. You'll see.
Oh yes. All at once, get lost in the teenage angst, hurt, loneliness, get completely overwhelmed by it, then this comes. It will amaze you how it will affect you.
@Vern Sherris They'll probably do a download, that seems to be the way these days. But you really need the LP's and the booklet that comes with it to see the whole story.
@Vern Sherris Yup, I've got my LP of the original album, and the booklet, which is key. Never did get the movie album. Wasn't Sting the "unsung star" of the movie? I only saw it once, when it was new, so it's been a while.
So glad you are doing some of The Who's early music from the 60's-70's. They have so many great songs such as "I Can't Explain", "The Kids Are Alright", "Substitute", "I Can See For Miles", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Baba O'Riley", "Behind Blue Eyes", "Boris The Spider", "Pictures Of Lily", "Magic Bus", "Who Are You", "Pinball Wizard" etc.
For me this a perfect rock song. "Reign" means to rule; so I think he was saying let love rule him/his actions; but there's the double entendre of letting love pour over him. So yeah, when you love - not just a lover - you will be faced with a multitude of feelings, but let love rule your reaction, too. Just my interpretation. You should check out Pearl Jam doing this song for the VH1 Rock Honors of The Who. Vedder kills it! Loved your reaction.

I believe you have it right. I’m going to check out Pearl Jam’s cover now.
yeah he kind of blurs the lines between "reign over me" and "rain on me" in a way that you can't really distinguish which he's saying but both at the same time is what I hear... and you're right though it's like a prayer for love to rule his life
When you've finished with Pearl Jam's version, you might want to check out Bette LaVette's stunning version, performed in front of Townshend and Daltrey as part of the Kennedy Center honors. Incredible.

As others have mentioned, this song lyrically becomes more meaningful when taken in the context of the whole concept album. This is not just the desire for the love of a singular person, significant other (girlfriend, wife, etc.) this is the aching want and need to be loved, yes. But more than that, in a more general sense, to be loved unconditionally as a child by your mother, father. In knowing and experiencing that love to then allow that love to reign o'er your life. Instead of being controlled by anger, frustration, pride, jealousy, envy or even hatred. If you know love you can give love and in doing so be at peace and experience joy. It is an interesting play on the words reign and rain. Love can be turbulent like a storm, but it can also just gently rain down upon us and wash away the pain. The intro piano, the ending crescendo of drums demonstrate that to great effect and Daltrey's guttural screams of love in the chorus are the desperate plea and cry of someone who wants and needs to know and experience love. Yet another masterpiece of a song from the Who.
Wife here...This song is simply STUNNING!!..The instrumentation..,vocals.., emotions ...blend so well...My Dear Husband's favorite song.. and album of all time..!!..So very special.."Accentute the love" so well said BJ.!!..And Asia so soooo many emotions..yes Ma'am...!!

Well, after this song and Roger Daltrey still hitting those notes, he was smiling from ear to ear and said it was one of his favorite concerts after RUSH. They were phenomenal
Seen them in Cincinnati Sunday night. After they honored the eleven kids that died in 1979.. at their concert 43 years ago.. they played this song. Goose bumps..
I Love The Who...I will see them in concert on October 26, 2022 if God spares my life.......and I want their Love To Reign O'er Us in the concert!!! Maybe the last concert for this legendary rock god band who along with The Beatles started This Rock n' Roll thang in 1963!!!! And May LOVE Reign O'er Asia and BJ Forever!!! lol....okay y'all....hahaha
"Love Reign O'er Me" is on a concept album from The Who called Quadrophenia. The story is about a teenage male named Jimmy struggling with the realities of morphing from a child into an adult. In the 3 songs prior to LROM, Jimmy was contemplating suicide. His life had become very dark. But suddenly he saw the light and realized the only thing that really matters is love. And once he realized that, he wanted love to reign o'er him.
Hi Asia and B J, I think one of The who's best songs. The line "The way the Beach is Kissed by the sea" is poetic, I believe if people would think like this is romantic. GREAT SONG WRITING JOB PETE TOWNSHEND and EXCELLENT SINGING ROGER DALTREY
I love this song - glad you decided to react to it. Probably my favorite by The Who. Though this is a British band, the term “O’er” is very well known in American music: “oh say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave”.
Welcome to that upper echelon of rock. You guys owe it to yourselves to check out the album, "Quadrophenia", that this song comes from. One of the greatest rock operas of all time.
Quadrophenia is a classic double album, a concept album that followed the exploits of the main character Jimmy in 1963 when there was this battle amongst British youth between the Mods and the Rockers. Rockers were ones who liked classic 50's rock and the Mods were into the new groups like the Who. If you can believe it, there were several gang violent fights between these groups (fighting over music) and Jimmy was a fan of the Who and got caught up in the exciting but dangerous exploits of the Mods. The first album is Jimmy's excitement becoming an integral part of the Mod movement and finds love amongst all the chaos. The second album is the unraveling of Jimmy after the excitement of the biggest battle between the two groups at Brighton Beach. The British government starts to crack down on them, he becomes more dependent on drugs, his girlfriend leaves him, and his Mod leader hero has joined the real world and has become a bell hop in Brighton Beach. "Love Reign O'er Me" is the last song of the album when Jimmy takes his motor scooter to the cliffs outside of the city and ultimately drives it over the cliff in that last wail and crashing of the song. There is a good movie version called Quadrophenia based on this album and Sting plays the Mod leader who becomes a bell hop. Best closing song to one of the best albums of all time.
O'er is a poetic form of over. The first use of o'er was 1592. Francis Scott Key even used it in our national anthem. Poets, and song writers, have used this for a long time. And as probably mentioned by others, notice the difference between the spelling of "Reign" and "Rain." Different meanings.
Another iconic British band. The Who have such an extensive catalogue,it’s hard to nail down one,but why not start at the beginning with My Generation.
Far from easy,I have attempted the scream in the car but just sounded like a badly hurt cat. Daltreys voice is one of THE iconic rock voices in history no doubt.
There's love and then there's unconditional love. I think it's very rare to fully grasp the meaning of unconditional love, even for a parent. Perhaps only God/our core being can grasp such a love.
Excellent Song. It is a Part of the Rock Opera Quadrophenia from The Who. Tip: Look the Movie Quadrophenia. It's a Movie about the Mods and Rocker rivalry in the 60s in Britain. Great Music in this Movie and Sting as a young actor.
This tune was the finale to The Who's rock opera "Quadrophenia". The Who also also created the rock opera, "Tommy". These are masterpiece rock albums that were actually made to hear for the complete album experience. Much like Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". They were amazing music-story concepts.
Did you notice how they did a play on words just like the royalty has its Reign and he has to get home to get him some cool cool rain so he wants it to have that power over him goodies also speaking about actual rain I just wanted to tell you though that orchestration was actually synthesizers I think one of the synthesizers was a string ensemble and he also used arp synthesizers they were all analog synthesizers so they had that great sound
The whole album - NY 17 from the thru-way to Roscoe. When I had to drive that stretch too many times between 1995-2003, Dr Jimmy & Mr Jim were there for me. Dirty jobs is a wonderful motivational song.
Love Reign O'er Me is the climax of a rock opera album called Quadrophenia. The opera discusses people (the four member of the band WHO) who are wandering through life in need of something.....this song tells us that the 'something' is LOOOVE
First time I saw The Who live, was at the Cow Palace on the tour Supporting this Album. The sound effects, rain, waves, etc came from the back of the house. Unfortunately, this was the night they finished with a drummer out of the crowd, after Moon passed out the second time.
This is by far my favorite Who song. The whole double album Quadraphenia is incredible from start to finish. The last time I saw the band Heart, along with their obligatory Led Zeppelin song, they played this one. Ann Wilson really belted it out.
Pete was never the greatest guitar player, and I would argue he was one of the best rhythm guitarist, but without question, he was one of rocks best song writers. Rodger was for sure one of the best front men, and while not as charismatic as some(Mick, Freddy, etc.), his voice was at the top, and it brought Pete's tunes to the next level like no other could. But I will argue John & Keith were the best bass player and drummer of all time, and when all 4 were at the top of their game, the Who was and is one of the best R&R bands of all time, #1 for me without question.
Agree with your assessment of Townshend as one of the best rhythm guitarists (if not the best), but I also think he is one of acoustic guitar players, too. Love his acoustic on this album on "I'm One" and "Love Ain't For Keeping" on Who's Next
@Vern Sherris Saw them in 83 with Soft Cell and Billy Squier. Then early 90’s with Stevie Ray Vaughan and The Fabulous Thunderbirds right before SRV died.
The Who was my son's first cassette he snagged from my collection when he was 12. This music is multi-generational & a huge rabbit hole. So many awesome songs to listen to. I want to go back to that time in my life. I can see Keith Moon killing those drums, in my mind. It came out in 1973.
What an incredible song. Piano, strings, acoustic and electric guitars and Daltrey’s anguished driven voice…wow. And only Townshend would think of playing electric guitar riffs over these beautiful string compositions. I guess you can tell I like this song! Definitely one of their best in my opinion.
Thank you ,Asia and B.J., for responding and playing this tune after people mention it..being a good one..Greatly appreciated..Some of the reaction channels talk a good game but don't really care that much about their subscribers ..One such channel is doing well but had two songs that were by phony artists (Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World , and Bob Dylan's " Like A Rolling Stone .". ) The couple ,who shall remain nameless ( But are from Moore, OK) , just blew off playing the correct version by authentic artist..Once again , I know your subscribers are grateful for your sincerity and for the fact you haven't gotten too big for your britches ..
The Who has so many great songs....this really shows the range of Roger Daltrey voice... check out video of their superbowl halftime show....amazing and listen to crowd
Yeah the previous commenter is totally right the ironic thing is this is the last song on a double record album we're talking in the context of vinyl record the old-school medium but yeah this was the very last song on this record so what you kids should do if you could go to the very start maybe just do one song a week or month or whatever there's like an intro and all the stuff and then there's the real me that's the very first song Hispanic I was in we used to play that one a lot that was fun to cover you know it's so funny there's not one bad song on this whole double album it's the concept album where it's all one big story which I won't give away the plot to you kids because you have to discover it for yourself obviously and we have to enjoy watching you discover it all right you youngsters
The "multitude of emotions" comment is very pertinent. This double album was about a very troubled young man from a very disfunctional family, and he became addicted to pills and booze, while hanging out with the "mod scene" in England, who fought the "Rockers"....and he was a young man desperately trying to "fit in". His depression, addiction, and disillusionment led to a fractured psyche, in which he ended up with 4 very distinct personalities (that's the meaning of Quadrophenia; a combo of quad (4) and schizophrenia (split mind)). Do The Real Me next 🙂 ....and then the rest of the album. ❤️ The album can only be truly understood when listening to it from beginning to end. The original album came with a picture storybook that told the whole story with pics from the movie (which was very good, btw).
Yesterday I started to watch this,, and it got deleted,, idk what happened,, But I went and listened to this song,, because its sacred. And I ended up listening to DR JIMMY,and ZOOT SUIT. Very few albums can grab my soul like Quadraphenia, maybe it was the time. But thanks for listening to this.
wow if you are an emotional person like me you will appreciate this masterpiece it touches every part of your heart and your soul ,pete townshend thank you so much for being a massive part of my life ,my brother even took his life to a who song, and what a lovely time to see see people like the two beautiful young lady and man appreciate quality and class to a classic
This song is the climax of the rock opera Quadrophenia- one of the greatest rock albums ever! At the end of the story the hero- Jimmy- has reached the end of his rope. He’s a troubled teen with a split personality and a drug problem, whose entire world has just fallen apart. He’s lost everything and is contemplating suicide, but instead reaches a moment of clarity and transcends his pain. It’s a story of growing up, putting aside childish, selfish things, and finding true meaning in life by learning to love.
THE WHO, "REIGN O'ER ME ". Roger Daltrey and his voice. (MY GOD) Pete Townsend wrote the Rock Opera (Album) Quadraphenia. The Guitarest showed his brilliance. Another awesome song off this is, "THE REAL ME".
Another Who power song that I think you guys would particularly enjoy is "Won't Get Fooled Again" which practically an anthem for a rebellious generation.
Possibly he's saying, he wants to feel mentally, emotionally and physically everything that comes with love. And not to be numb to everything. Love your reactions.
Probably the greatest who track :)....and comes from the epic Quadrophenia album !!.....also the film Quadrophenia is a must watch ....it's a way of life ;)
I always felt that he has realized that his life is empty (on a dark and dusty road) and that he needs love to reign over him and to become a better person.
The cliche about great art is that it makes you feel something - sadness, joy, reflection, anxiety, love, hate, wistfulness, etc. and this song makes you feel something.
To K Salters comment below the interchanging of "rain" and "reign can be a little confusing. Think, Quenn Elizabeth reigns over the British Empire. So, Reign o'er me, means let love control and rule my life.
My all time favorite song. I really like the way he uses the words ‘reign’ and ‘rain.’ He wasn’t referring to love of a particular person, it was just love in general. He wanted it to reign over him and take control of his life, and to rain on him to soak him with what he is yearning for. It really is worth listening to the entire album (it’s a double album, so give yourself plenty of time) to follow the story of Jimmy (the main character) and what leads up to the climatic ending of “Love, Reign O’er Me”.
Saw them live in 2000. I think it was the tour right after John Entwistle died so Pete Townsends brother was the bassist and Ringo Starr’s son (the Beatles) was on drums. This song was amazing live. Roger Daltry has that voice and was swinging the mic by its cord all over the place. Damn near a religious experience. I actually went to see Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin as their opener. Best money I’ve ever spent.

Wow, glad you chose to do this one, it's a classic and closes out the double album of "Quadrophenia" as the grand finale. BJ, you were right in the emotional conveyance of Roger's singing. If you know the context of the storyline for the album, the vocals and music really highlights the desperation of the main character, his plea for love. That's why those screams for love is so powerful....gives me the chills.
On the Eagles documentary, Glenn Frye was talking about going to London to record their first album and they were working with the famous producer, Glyn Johns, who had produced all the biggest acts to date. Frye was complaining to Johns that he didn't like the sound and that he had added too much echo and that he wanted the Eagles to sound like a rock and roll band. This made Johns scream at him, "You are NOT a rock and roll band! THE WHO ARE A ROCK AND ROLL BAND!!!!!" and I kinda have to agree with him.
I agree with those who say you should listen to the Quadrophenia album that this comes from, but I would also recommend watching the movie of the same name to understand what all the tracks are about, how they fit into the story. The sentiment of the song here comes from one of the characters in the movie.
That's how Quadrophenia ends. Epic. Maybe my favorite Who song. Daltrey's best vocal? Unreal. BJ, you said you loved bass on some old videos, you really need to hear The Real Me from Quadrophenia too, some of greatest bass lines ever. Maybe listen to I Am the Sea followed by The Real Me, it's kind of an intro mood setter before Real Me. These 2 songs open Quadrophenia with no break between, and Love Reign O'er Me closes it on side 4. PS Pearl Jam did fantastic versions of these 2 songs live at some Who tribute concert. Worth checking out those videos too.
I was fortunate/lucky enough to see the who perform this album in concert while in London on vacation in 96 at the princes trust benefit concert and I was absolutely blown away
One of my favorite Who songs. I'm One, also on this album a great one. I've been lucky enough to see Heart and Pearl Jam cover this song, and just as incredible!
I’ve seen The Who multiple times since 1979 and Daltrey remains one of the best singers and performers in rock history. And this song is one of his best.
This song is from Quadrophenia. A rock opera about a young guy struggling with his multiple personas. This song is his plea for Love to reign ie rule, over his life. It has nothing to do with rain as in precipitation. The music conveys his almost manic need for peace and love to settle his constant chaotic emotional state.
This song still gives me chills, almost 50 years now. That whole album, Quadrophenia is incredible, one of the best Rock Concept albums ever. Try the Real Me off that album, great song and killer bass by the late, great John Entwhistle. Enjoy! 🎸
Yep, The Real Me is a killer song to react to- or The Punk and the Godfather, Dr. Jimmy....hell, just react to the whole album :-)

There was The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and THE WHO...man my youth was blessed in the music category!!!!!
Classic finale to Quadrophenia. Daltrey's vocals are the star of the song. Not as easy as he makes it seem.
Far from easy,I have attempted the scream in the car but just sounded like a badly hurt cat.
Daltreys voice is one of THE iconic rock voices in history no doubt.
Perhaps my favorite WHO song. The emotion of the song and the power in Daltrey's voice is amazing.
Ringo was asked once if was a Rocker or a Mod,classic Ringo,I'm a "Mocker".
Quadrophenia...Awesome album! Check out the song "Dr. Jimmy" off of the same album.
Peace
Roger Daltrey gives a Master Class in vocals in this performance. 👏 Going to see the "boys" for the umpdreth time in Philly on May 20. 🤟
Greatest Rock Band Ever
The whole album - NY 17 from the thru-way to Roscoe. When I had to drive that stretch too many times between 1995-2003, Dr Jimmy & Mr Jim were there for me. Dirty jobs is a wonderful motivational song.
One of The Who's greatest songs from one of their greatest albums! Quadrophenia reigns!!
Love Reign O'er Me is the climax of a rock opera album called Quadrophenia. The opera discusses people (the four member of the band WHO) who are wandering through life in need of something.....this song tells us that the 'something' is LOOOVE
Drumming on this song might actually be the best I've ever heard! Definitely top 5.
First time I saw The Who live, was at the Cow Palace on the tour Supporting this Album. The sound effects, rain, waves, etc came from the back of the house. Unfortunately, this was the night they finished with a drummer out of the crowd, after Moon passed out the second time.
@Vern Sherris Yeah but it was a shortened show. Lynard Skynyrd opened for them
This is a perfect song. The intensity and depth of the vocal. The meaning and feeling of the lyric. The music.
Pearl Jam does a great cover of this song, you guys should react to that one as well and tell us which version you like better!
This is by far my favorite Who song. The whole double album Quadraphenia is incredible from start to finish. The last time I saw the band Heart, along with their obligatory Led Zeppelin song, they played this one. Ann Wilson really belted it out.
There is a live cover of this by Pearl Jam from VH1 honors the who. Highly recommend
I always say that Zeppelin is my favorite band but The Who is the best band.
Agree with your assessment of Townshend as one of the best rhythm guitarists (if not the best), but I also think he is one of acoustic guitar players, too. Love his acoustic on this album on "I'm One" and "Love Ain't For Keeping" on Who's Next
@@vespoint If you mean the genre of just Heavy Rock yes these 2 bands are the very best.
5:02- You got me thinking of "Down On Me", by Jackal, when you were talking about love raining over him, Asia.
I think y'all would like that song.
High school memories , this one .
Brilliance in composition and vibe .
All timer .
Back in the day when I saw The Who this song had tears streaming down my face! This song breaks me! 💔💔💔💔💔
Piano, strings, acoustic and electric guitars and Daltrey’s
anguished driven voice…wow. And only Townshend would think of playing electric
guitar riffs over these beautiful string compositions. I guess you can tell I like this
song! Definitely one of their best in my opinion.
I love the play on the word rain/reign.
Simply epic, simply elegant, and so powerful, a true classic!
"o'er" is a traditional old English variant of "over", used in poems and song.
The Who has so many great songs....this really shows the range of Roger Daltrey voice... check out video of their superbowl halftime show....amazing and listen to crowd
Another great song!
Do The Real Me next 🙂
....and then the rest of the album.
❤️
The album can only be truly understood when listening to it from beginning to end.
The original album came with a picture storybook that told the whole story with pics from the movie (which was very good, btw).
You should know this is the last song of a double album that is a concept album. That's why that dramatic ending
Yesterday I started to watch this,, and it got deleted,, idk what happened,,
But I went and listened to this song,, because its sacred.
A true MASTERPIECE...from a legendary band .
A Who track not done by reviewers but well worth doing, is Slip Kid.
Masterpiece! Yes, it still sounds amazing 50 years later. I am 63! I got emotional.
ONE OF ROCKS GREATEST SONGS EVER..PURE EMOTION,LOVE AND RELEASE...IT'S LIKE THE END OF AN OPERA
This song completely satisfies the heart, soul, mind and ears. Epic music and lyrics.
Rocking the Vancouver Cap, KUDOS.
Still is one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time, what a band , love you two ! ❤❤❤❤
Quadrophenia is my favorite album of all time!! This song is the climax of the album!!
This is their greatest song.
Bass guitar, lead guitar, drums, and vocals are all top notch in this song. One of The Who's best efforts.Thank you guys for this one! Have a great day.
Daltrey is arguably the greatest rock singer of all time! His voice is what Rock n Roll is all about!
The cliche about great art is that it makes you feel something - sadness, joy, reflection, anxiety, love, hate, wistfulness, etc. and this song makes you feel something.
One of the greatest voices in Rock history! Check out "5:15" from the same Album!
To K Salters comment below the interchanging of "rain" and "reign can be a little confusing. Think, Quenn Elizabeth reigns over the British Empire. So, Reign o'er me, means let love control and rule my life.
It was written by Pete townshend the guitarist he wrote most who songs
I stand corrected. August 27th 2002 (not 2000). I found the set list for both.

As a guy growing up listening to The Who I am just glad that there is much younger folk who can appreciate the old music.
This is what we do …….we listen to great masterpieces ….Who was ahead of their time….way back in the sixties….through the seventies and beyond…..
Notice it's called Reign, but they used Rain also. Two different words .
From the concept album “Quadrophenia”. That entire album is gold. Lead guitarist, Pete Townsend is a master composer.
I can't realize how fast time goes by !!!
Just saw The Who 2 nights ago in OKC. It was amazing!
@Vern Sherris It was. My wife is now a big Who fan too
On the Eagles documentary, Glenn Frye was talking about going to London to record their first album and they were working with the famous producer, Glyn Johns, who had produced all the biggest acts to date.
Never heard the word Love sung like that Ever! Very Special.
