  • Have you ever been told that time heals all wounds? Chantal is here to debunk this and show why time does not heal wounds. Through the telling of heartfelt personal experiences, Chantal is able to illustrate why we must dig deeper into our problems. Chantal Kayumba is a fourth year nursing student at the University of Windsor. She was born and raised in Windsor and is of Rwandan descent. She has served around the world as a volunteer for various mission trips along with organizing and leading many teams to various regions to serve. She has a passion for mental health and continues to research and raise awareness in any capacity. Her goal is to continue her studies in nursing leadership after graduating this spring and eventually be one of the leading minds and researchers in the field of psychiatry through the nursing role. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

From a long time mental health professional here, what a great talk this is - it forced me to think on and reflect about a few things, and some new things that I learned too.
    Brilliant Chantal.

Thank you for believing in me and that little girl that was abused by her parents. Maybe I will finally feel some relief from the pain I’ve been in.

The fact that you can hear her heartbeat throughout this is a subtle gorgeous detail.

She was lovely, what a kind soul. Interesting how frequently the wounded become healers.

I had a bully who stole a friend of mine in 2nd grade. My supposed friend said to me, "Say goodbye to your best friend." Everyone loves talking about the innocence of childhood. It doesn't exist. Children have to be taught empathy.

Agree about empathy. I lost my "best friend" in elementary school too when she informed me that her "best friend" was coming back and I realized that I was never her "best" friend. Broke my heart then and probably never got over it. Empathy is something we all need. Great presentation!

Time only stands a chance of doing any healing if help is delivered in time. If it goes past that time the wound becomes a disability and handicaps the rest of your life.

didn't know i could learn so much in just 12min28sec!!Brilliant Chantal. As you were talking i couldn't stop thinking about Rwanda and Healing a nation, deep wounds, forces to apply for healing when you've been hit by unimaginable pain/bullies who got creative, when the psychological met the physical ..interesting

Everybody can do TedTalks these days, it depends on context. Time can if used correctly heal all wounds.

She has good intentions, but it's a very bad idea to face your trauma regardless of how painful it is. If you replay a traumatic event in your mind you are actually able to re-tramatize yourself and cause further damage exactly in the place where you need healing. Trauma is actually pretty well understood and there are certain ways to properly release it from your body. However, these practices don't include talking about your experience to the point where you're putting yourself in a horrible state of discomfort. Look up somatic experiencing. If you don't have the time/money for therapy, you can read about it and help yourself, take things slowly and find your safe place. If you want to look into your painful memories, take it slow and have someone to comfort you. Stop when you start noticing sensations in your body and just accept how you feel. Once you notice these sensations, pay attention to how they affect you throughout the day. Meditation, yoga, and being in nature, even spirituality can help in a direct way, so try things out and see what works for you.
