There is an actual reason-- and it's not what you're thinking. See, no matter what way you think about it, Spider-Man is STILL Marvel's flagship character. They ARE AWARE of how infamous the run has become. They KNOW that people are NOT satisfied with the run. It's the same thing with any long form media, Spongebob, Simpsons, Family Guy. At this point, it doesn't matter if it's "good," it just needs to stay relevant to keep people like YOU talking about it.

Zeb Wells seems to be weirdly oblivious to Marvel continuity. He keeps having Peter describing a fatherly relationship with Norman that never existed on Earth 616, but only in the Raimi trilogy. That's also where he gets the idea of Norman and Goblin being separate personalities, when in the comics they never were. But most importantly, he seems to have forgotten the Dark Reign run. Norman Osborn already fooled the whole nation into thinking he was redeemed. He basically ran the country and was then exposed to the world as a war criminal and terrorist. I don't care whatever juju made him a good guy recently, for Earth 616 to feel like a believable world, Norman cannot be back to run his business like nothing happened.

      @dn22pkkdd476 4 месяца назад +3

It's not a recent thing, nor is it a "Zeb Wells is oblivious to continuity" thing. As soon as the Rami movies came out, many writers in the main 616 continuity would have Norman trying to use Peter as a surrogate son, or try to find ways to corrupt him and be his heir. Peter's response would vary, either being angry about it or feeling pity for Norman before punching his lights out. There was a whole storyline where Norman had been drugging Peter's toothpaste and putting hypnotic suggestions in old music Peter would nostalgically listen to. All to get Parker to join him, Darth Vader style. Paul Jenkins had heavy shades of this twisted father/son dynamic during his Goblin story with Humberto Ramos on art. That Goblin battle ends with Peter and Norman having a sit-down, heart to heart conversation with each other about everything in their relationship up till that point. Norman even tries to get Peter to open up by telling him a silly tale, like a dad telling his upset son a bad joke before counseling him on serious matters. Osborn actually considers getting his gun and ending himself the next day after contemplating what Peter says to him.
Same thing with the "split personality" of Norman and The Goblin. It's not a Zeb Wells mistake. It's a constant thing that is never set in stone from one writer to another. As soon as that William Defoe performance was seen by mass audiences, so many writers would use that as their go-to depiction for Norman. And it makes sense why. The early amnesia plot lines before his death would have Norman revert from a raving lunatic, to a calm collected business man, like it was nothing. It's understandable why writers looking at those stories would think Norman had a completely seperate persona. The 90's cartoon series also used The Goblin as an alter to Norman's personality and that was a very popular depiction, with Norman and The Goblin being separate again. Even Harry had a split persona with The Goblin in that show, something he never had in the comics. The more recent interpretations by Warren Ellis and Bendis also have Norman having a split personality, but both identities are pure evil. The Goblin is crazier, while Norman is a straight up Lex Luthor styled asshole. Both are bad. During Thunderbolts and Dark Reign, Norman would be talking to and hallucinating The Goblin persona as a separate entity.
There have only been a few periods where writers have gotten rid of the split personality thing. The stretch of time between the end of "The Clone Saga" and "The Gathering Of Five" had Norman in control for the entire time. Mark Millar's Marvel Knights: Spider-Man book also had Norman as the only persona. The only writer who seemed to 100% acknowledge that there should not be a split between Norman and The Goblin, was Dan Slott. His run had Norman just get a bit more dramatic and wild when putting on the mask, but never once did he depict The Goblin as a separate identity. Even after Slott had Norman "cured" of the Goblin serum during the end of Superior, Osborn acts pretty much the same up until Red Goblin. And the end of that story had Norman finally getting a split persona again, but he becomes "Cletus Cassidy" instead of The Goblin.
Zeb also isn't responsible for the people of the marvel universe seemingly forgetting what Norman did during Dark Reign and Seige. That is an issue that just keeps happening. After "The Gathering Of Five", Spidey publicly unmasks Norman for the first time and he goes completley insane, he gets out of the loony bin and back in power pretty quickly, even falling in love with his in-home nurse. Bendis has this happen again with Spider-Man publicly arresting and unmasking Osborn. He soon becomes director of the Thunderbolts program during the 50 State Initiative. And on it goes. Norman is outed for his crimes, is taken off the table, comes back in a seat of power. Every single time. When Nick Spencer was writing Spider-Man, Norman just shows up as head of the Ravencroft Institute. A guy who has been outed as The Green Goblin multiple times, tried to lay seige to a Asgaurd, gave the orders for his Sentry to crash the city of the gods on Oklahoma and killed tons of people, should never be allowed to run New York's premiere mental health asylum. And yet, no one gave a single toss. Zeb's run has been lack-luster, but his handling of "good guy Norman" has not. The Gold Goblin mini series was a ton of fun and Peter being strange bedfellows with Osborn has been the best part of the book. Zeb kept the continuity that Spencer set up with "Osborn's Sins" being a corrupting force on anyone who get possessed by them. Like it or not, this isn't the first time all these things have happened to Norman. And until Marvel and the fans let Spider-Man out of his repetitive status quo, allowing Peter to gracefully die/retire/become a mentor to the next Spider-Man, it won't be the last time. It's just going to get more complicated each time, as the next writer will want to use The Goblin and will have to bend over backwards to make the continuity fit as to why Norman isn't locked away underground and is still somehow in a seat of power.

@@dn22pkkdd476 I agree, the characters being essentially stuck in a loop ever since the nineties has completely wrecked the concept of continuity.
Whay pisses me off is that this was unnecessary. Peter started as a guy juggling the superhero life with high school, then with university, than with a job and a family life. Progress is part of his nature. In order for this spirit to be preserved, Norman Osborn should have stayed dead in the first place. While Batman stories would never kill off Joker, having him returning again and again untill DC will print comics , Gerry Conway embraced the true nature of Spider-Man by closing this chapter. Norman was only resurrected as anafterthought to put an end to the clone saga, which in turn only existed as a way to reboot Spider-Man in a way that undid his growth as a character. The fact that Marvel is not willing to break the loop and have Peter becoming an adult is particularly nonsensical now that younger generation have Miles Morales and Hickman proved that dad Spider-Man sells.
Sure Zeb Wells may not be responsible of the state of Marvel, but his run arguably summarizes everything wrong with how Spider-Man has been handled in the past 30 years.

So here’s my dilemma. On one hand this feels very much like the critiques of the Star Wars sequels. Fans hated the prequels and how different they were from the originals so The Force Awakens is eerily similar to A New Hope. People didn’t like how similar it was so they tried to really switch it up with The Last Jedi. People hated how different it was, so we got another rehashed movie with Rise of Skywalker. An over simplification really but same thing here. They had the idea of Peter learning to be friends with his greatest nemesis. People didn’t like that Peter would be that stupid, so they had Peter say that he never trusted him and the fans are mad he didn’t trust Norman. Kinda feels like either way whether Peter actually trusted Norman or not that people would have been mad.
But honestly that’s because it sucks. Peter wouldn’t have taken the job under Norman to “keep an eye on him” if he didn’t think that Norman was actually trying to be better. He wouldn’t have fought crime with him by his side if he thought Norman was just biding his time until he’s distracted and would throw a pumpkin bomb at him. But that line didn’t really strike a nerve with me, personally . Actions speak louder than words and the fact Peter said that when they were fighting makes me think Peter was upset and bitter about it and said he “never trusted him” to hurt Norman because the reality is that he did trust Norman and blames himself for being an idiot.
Frankly the biggest problem I have with Zeb is how they are acting like Norman was this great person before the Goblin. The Green Goblin has been in 616 before Norman and Norman has always been a dick to Peter. Zeb’s “knowledge” of Spider-Man comes from the Raimi films, not the comics. So he’s writing a version of the character that isn’t accurate and is just passing it off like it’s always been that way. Pretty aggrivating honestly.

@@LewisFilmsProductions like you said, it’s not as if Peter feeling betrayed about trusting Norman would have been weird. In fact given Norman’s state with his Sins/Evil being removed and forced to feel the guilt of everything he’s done, this was honestly the _ONLY_ time Peter or anyone could trust or believe in Norman. Hell this could have been the straw that broke the camels back to Peter's trust issues. With his hero friends not helping him this time of need, MJ leaving him for a man who committed Omnicide, and now Norman. Literally the _ONLY_ person who was on Peter’s side throughout the entire run.
I just realized something. If Peter is able to once again expel the Sins, and with the Sins seemingly reverting the Norman and Goblin persona as Split Personalities, what will this for Norman and Peter going forward? I think there are two things you disregarded here. First is that Peter always tries to see the best in people and he believes in redemption. This has always been a very big part of his character. He once offered a job to an ex-supervillain. So the idea that Peter would try to trust Norman but *couldn't* is something very realistic.
Second, at the end of the day, you cannot call Peter an idiot here. He was prepared for the Goblin's return and laid a pretty good trap knowing what the Goblin would do. He is not an idiot because he had a plan that worked. The one thing he did not anticipate was Kraven stabbing him with Osborn's sins and causing him to do corrupt his own brain. That is why Osborn won this issue.

I get that he may end up in the next few issues but his reaction was off. Almost like he didn’t blame himself for trusting him, when he knew full well that he’d come back. As you mentioned, he was even prepared for him. Just makes Peter seem stupid for even trusting him in the first place if this was his true feelings. It makes him look manipulative too.
      But you make good points.

@@LewisFilmsProductions There are two answers to that. First, Peter does not usually feel guilt unless someone is actually harmed by his actions. Second, Peter has not felt guilt conscious for years now. The perfect example is at the end of Parker Industries. Peter did not feel any real guilt or remorse for the company shutting down and all the employees losing their jobs until Robbie told him he messed up. He did not feel any guilt after pushing Osborn to Sineater during the Nick Spencer run. The character is written such a way that he does what he thinks is right in moment and does not feel guilty about it afterwards.

While this is definitely true snother factor of his relatability is hid inherent flaws. Spider-Man can be an asshole. Peter Parker makes mistakes and fucks up. The early comics understood this and that is why the drama of Peter’s life was so compelling. The writers forgot this and thought that the only way Spider-Man could be relatable was to just fuck with Peter. At a certain point it stops being real.

Let me be clear on this. Marvel Comics don't know what to do with Spider-Man because they continue to character assassinate Peter Parker as a hero by having him work with his greatest enemy Norman Osborn/Green Goblin. This is the same bad story telling that made Sin's Past, One More Day, and this current run the worst Spider-Man arcs ever.
In comparison to Ultimate Spider-Man by both Bendis and Hickman, they write Spider-Man exactly how he is. A hero struggling to deal with the consequences. That's my point on why Marvel Editors are treating Spider-Man like this.

I think that the point of issue 50 is that Peter TRIED to trust Norman, but in his heart deep down, he couldn't bring himself to FULLY trust him. He wanted to trust him, and their relationship in this run was him trying to trust him. I think him saying, "I NEVER TRUSTED YOU" is the truth underneath the surface. (Look, I hate this run. But the Norman/Peter relationship is not the problem. It's the treated of Peter and Mary Jane as characters, friends, previous lovers, and people in general. MJ is one of the kindest, most understanding people in the Marvel universe. But the editorial hate her so much that they made her someone who would basically cheat on Peter, and act like he's the one to blame after the fact. Which, even if that how we might feel about the situation. MJ would never think like that, or say things like that to him. She cares about him, and how he feels as a friend. And she would never put him through so much pain and avoid talking about it for months on end. That's just not who she is as a person. And literally EVERYONE who has ever experienced anything Spider-Man could tell you that)

Maybe if Marvel editorials would've instead like, i don't flippin know...
Has Harry Osborn be the Gold Goblin instead of Norman Flippin' Osborn of all people! Like maybe he took up the moniker in a attempt of to proves everyone that he nothing like his evil father and became an goblin-themed hero, like Phil Urich did before back in the 90s.
And has Peter be a married family man and still be a superhero alongside Miles, whom he would eventually pass the mantle to him when he know the time when to retire as Spider-Man for good.
And has MJ be Spinneret, like in Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows comics, rather than being Jackpot while also having Peter and MJ's children, Mayday, whom would be the oldest and be either 15 or 16 and would be Spider-Girl, along Richard Parker II and Annabelle "Annie" Parker be Spider-Boy and Spiderling altogether, as well.
And they could've instead has the Spider-Goblin be from another universe where Peter Parker who lost both his aunt and uncle to a mugger and start to develop a misanthropic and nihilistic outlook on life and everyone to be inherently evil as he than start dedicating his life of proves his theory as he had nearly conquered most of his universe and learn of the multiverse where he would envy the mainstream universe's Peter Parker for having an normal life as he attempt to kill him while also probably fought other Spider-people in the multiverse, along with other evil versions of several Spider-people (Miguel O'Hara, Miles Morales, Mayday Parker, Jessica Drew, Anya Corazon, Gwen Stacy, Ben Reilly, Noir Peter Parker, Mangaverse Peter Parker, Pavitr Prabhakar, Peni Parker, Hobie Brown, etc.) and other Spider-Man villains (Dr. Octopus, Electro, Carnage, Lizard, Vulture, Sandman, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Hydro-Man, Molten Man, Morbius, Rhino, White Rabbit, Hobgoblin, Big Wheel, Hammerhead, Kingpin, Tombstone, Prowler, Venom, Spider-Slayer, Chameleon, Lightmaster, etc., etc., etc., etc.), which would lead another massive Spider-Verse crossover cause Marvel really love to do massive crossover events instead of just doing another Marvel Team-Up series.

The issue with this line is that it's a *_straight-up lie._* When Peter and Norman first met he didn't treat him like a son. He never did. Their first meeting is Green Goblin trying to kill Spider-Man.
When this issue was published many people thought that Wells confused the comics with the Raimi movies where their dynamic is more akin to a father-son.
I am kinda bummed that nothing came out of this arc, but to me Peter trusting Norman and completely forgetting their entire history would have been the bigger character assassination. So in a way, I am kinda glad that Peter was lying all this time.

Part of me wants to believe that the reason why Peter was willing to work with Norman is that he can keep a closer eye on him, knowing what he's capable of in the past. And saying that he trusts Norman is a way to keep him off guard. And when Osborn does betray him, it would made Peter's "I told you so" moment all the more impactful, but that's just my theory. No way this would ever be Zeb Wells's intention for a plot twist.
It's very clear that Marvel just doesn't care anymore. 😑😑😑
Marvel in general hasn't been the same since Stan Lee died.

I don't think it's all on Zeb Wells, he wrote Avenging Spider-Man and Carnage U.S.A in the early 2010's and even though those got overshadowed by Superior Spider-Man that was some solid work by Wells, not to mention he's writing on the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine movie plus he created that one show on Adult Swim SuperMansion that was actually pretty funny. What's wrong with Amazing Spider-Man isn't gonna be fixed simply by getting rid of Zeb Wells, this is just a very deep rooted editorial issue that's been going on a long time and affected both Dan Slott and Nick Spencer too; editorial picks the guy to steer the ship the way the higher up's see fit, the Spidey office at Marvel could stand for an entirely new team all together cause truthfully it's been the same guys with the same stale approach for over twenty years. Thank God they have Greg Weisman and Jonathan Hickman just doing their own thing on the side with Spider-Men and Ultimate but I want those to be more of the norm now and not just a compromise side thing, and that can't really happen under current editorial.

I'd say it doesn't make Peter dumb, he was keeping his enemy close to be ahead of their next strike, but him saying he *never* trusted Norman just makes him kind of an a-hole.
I thought this whole run was about Peter moving on from past trauma and Norman growing as a character beyond a villain, you know, the whole inspiring theme behind Spider-Man about becoming a better person by recognizing your flaws and accepting your limits in order to improve yourself... but nope, it's just the same as always, making this whole thing a major waste of time.
I know there isn't much to do to evolve Spider-Man comics lore, but this was yet another Marvel lap after its own tail, where they just keep making you running in circles until you realize it's pointless.

I have a wonderful idea for new story arc for Spider-Man:
We see how someone is rewatching the video, where Spider-Man reveals his face, but it was covered by red interferences. To uncover this mystery, a woman calls her friend and tells that they’re going to New York.
Later, Spider-Man encounters an aristocratic looking woman named Marquise De Blade and her Chinese companion Yun-Yun: Marquise can weapons from the light, especially a sword, while Yun-Yun is a skilled martial artist and master of Chi.
Spider-Man fights Marquise, but their fight are interrupted by a group of intruders, who calls themselves “Those from the future”. One of them, Greenika, attacks Yun-Yun, but Spider-Man saves her and helps Marquise and Yun-Yun to defeat Greenika. Enemies leave, promising to return, and Spider-Man forms an alliance with Marquise, Yun-Yun and a mysterious Vira.
During this story arc they fight against Those from the future, which includes:
    - Greenika: a young woman who can create big green energy claws from her hands
    - Aurelia: an elderly lady with strong mind control abilities
    - Ferra: a living liquid of iron, which takes form of human girl.
    - Sixth: a cynical young man with white hair and red jacket, who can create his own version of “Psi-web” and make his body grow in muscles.
    - Miss Ally: a high attractive woman, who can transform into an owl-like monstrous creature.
    - Lunaris: a goddess of the Moon, who is forced to serve the group’s leader.
Throughout the story, Spider-Man reveals his identity to Marquise and they will fall in love with each other. Meanwhile, Yun-Yun will find a white haired and practically nude young lady, only known as “Q”. The team is attacked by Avengers on request of their newest member, Leah, who in reality a genetic experiment of “Those from the future” (just like Sixth), known as L.E.A.H.
After this battle, Marquise begins to act strange. Turns out that “Marquise” was a robot who is being placed by another member of “Those from the future” - Maina, who was pretending to be “Vira” all along. Peter, Yun-Yun & Q defeat them only to encounter the leader of Those from the future - Dagger. She also can manipulate light and create weapons from it, especially daggers. They can’t defeat her, and Q uses her teleport ability to save her friends.
Peter, Yun-Yun & Q start to search for Marquise only to find out about Dagger’s plan: she is planning to plant her mind into Marquise’s body.
Turn out, Marquise is the true founder of “Those from the future”: their fight against “Those from the future” will unite many superheroes and will form an organisation, which becomes “Those from the future” in a distant future. The shocking truth is also revealed: Marquise is actually Dagger’s ancestor.
The last issues of this story arc will bring many superheroes together, however, Dagger succeeds to place her consciousness into Marquise’s body, making her powers way stronger. Dagger, who is now called “Neo-Marquise”, asks heroes to finish “Those from the future”, but she is attacked by Spider-Man, Yun-Yun & Q. Dagger’s former companions also join the battle.
The climax is very dramatic: at one point Marquise manages to bring back control of her body, says goodbye to her friends and stabs herself with a blade from light, killing herself.
Heartbroken Peter leaves with Yun-Yun in China to visit Yun’s sister.
