If you are a melee attacker rather than range when doing the group method, is there a specific way to keep bandos off your aggro or will the tank continue to hold aggro from doing the opening hit and then continuing to hit?
Bandos isn't a dragon, so the dragon hunter crossbow really is only about as strong as a Dragon crossbow here. But that being said if its all you have for some reason, it wont hurt to use but its not the best use case for that specific crossbow.

As long as the tank gets the first hit it should function the same as if you were ranging
