  • ►There is a lot to consider when choosing what engine oil to put in your car. At FCP Euro, we pooled our customer base via social media to come up with questions most commonly asked regarding all aspects of engine oil from change intervals, weights, viscosity indexes and even how it's made (not to mention how it works). We asked all of this and more to Steffen Niemietz, Application Engineer for LIQUI MOLY's R&D department from Germany to get the answers.

    High Mileage Oil is a good marketing phrase. In laymen terms all that means is they have put more seal swell in the oil to keep the seals soft. If your engine does not have any seal leakage, you do not need high mileage oil.

    Some learning notes for myself, please correct me if I don't understand it correctly.
    11:03 break-in oil change advise, shorten the first oil change and use exactly the same original oil that the engine was developed with.
    12:00 high mileage car & oil choice: strictly stick with the manufacturer-approved oil specification and just use a little thicker oil. the additive formula is much more important than viscosity.
    14:00 auto-start-off turbocharge engine: Recommend engine flush for the carbon built up when the oil stops following and get boiled inside the turbocharger.

    And Volkswagen reduced it's warranty period from 7 years to 4 years 50,000 miles. Obviously they have a lot of confidence in the 0W 20 oil. This is what happens when an engine is designed around an oil weight instead of an oil being designed to lubricate an engine. The EPA tells the manufacturer what oil they have to use and the manufacturer has to scramble to find a way to keep the engine from melting down. If you don't use the "Specified" oil, they can't reach their CAFE fuel mileage average and then they get fined. Meanwhile, LiquiMoly warns us that the VW508 specification is not backwards compatible and if you run it in an engine that doesn't call for it, it may not give adequate protection.

    The other reason for 10w-60 in the M cars is the VANOS S54 (E46) system is designed to work with the 60 weight, only, at operating temperature. Lower weight oils will not allow it the valves in the VANOS head unit function as designed.

  • @MegaHollywood1971
    @MegaHollywood1971 Месяц назад

    If you listen well, you can use 5-40 weight oil even if your vehicle calls for 0-20. It comes down to emission systems.
    If super charged (which most are), run a higher viscosity. If increasing stock power levels, go another step higher in viscosity. Just don’t give your car the beans until your oil sump is at least 180deg F and you’ll be fine.
    For the greenhouse folks, you may enjoy writing and/or reading on paper, but the enthusiasts enjoy romping on cars.

You would first want to limit your choices of oil to those with OE approval for your specific application. Let me know if you have any other questions!

      The honest answer: It depends. Typically if you can find the heavier weight oil with the same approval for you car, this is the best choice. This means it has been tested and approved by your car manufacturer for use in your vehicle, and all the functions will work correctly. Many modern engines have very tight oil tolerances and some functions may not work as well with a heavier weight oil.

    • @Vanguardkl
      @Vanguardkl 3 года назад +1

      Pennzoil is the brand mate of Shell and Ultra is Shell Helix Ultra, the best motor oil in the world. No one else has Shells gas cracking tech that allows formulation of synthetic at a molecular level. No other oil manufacturer has the tech. Mobil, Chevron come close with great additives. Project Farm provides some evidence of this, and there are numerous sources of long term testing showing Shell to be the best. My own Kia 2.0 2010 runs like new after 240000km using Helix Ultra from day 1 for 11 years. Not sure what the other commenters are saying, not providing any alternative evidence for their "belief" in LM. about Project Farm that's one data source, if you take all the data on engine oil, Shell beats them all. LM sells a lot of imaginary cures for problems that never existed, like Ceratec that has puts a layer of ceramic inside you engine that has no proper purpose and probably will lead to actual problems.

    Hey I don’t like that the car manufacturers kinda force you to use an oil like 0W 20 or 0W 40. Ok tight tolerances. I think older import car’s engines came tight tolerant. Then these oils only come in synthetic blend. My truck doesn’t have a turbo but takes 0W40. Then these engines will use oil and maybe more oil because they have cylinder reduction. If someone were to use let’s say 5W40 synthetic in a vehicle which uses only 0W40 it will throw a code. I think there’s a need to use at least a 5W grade oil but can keep it synthetic.
