Tim love your videos ! yes jig hooks are great for some patterns especially those that are more of an attractor pattern. There are times when some of our tailwater and creek wild trout get locked into the hatch a nymph tied on a traditional hook actually with pick up more fish. Tight lining works great for all nymph fishing.
Have almost exclusively switched to jigs and love Hanak, good strong hooks and I like that they have some variations in hook style for the reasons you touch on.
Appreciate the kind words re: my enthusiasm, though I have zero plans on starting fly fishing infomercials, ha ha! Hanak hooks are the best I've used re: nymphs, and the ones I choose far greater than other brands. With that said, there are some other great choices out there; Fulling Mill is producing excellent nymph hooks, too. Speaking of books, I'm working on a new one, so I better start planning a new infomercial ;-) Thanks for taking a moment to comment, and hope to hear from you on some of my other videos. The jig hook cult is real! I changed over early in 2019. Flies tied in the round, slay! Orient Sun brand hooks are amazing and they don't hurt your pocket.
It sure is, Jason! Welcome to the addiction, right?? I have used those looks and had great success, mainly staying around size #14. How small do they go? Tim www.troutandfeather.com
As much as I like those because this is the first hook brand I used for jig hooks. Have to say, now I prefer dohiku for consistency of shape and strength.
Wow, that's great to hear! Their streamer hooks are excellent, and all of my largest fish in the last five years have been caught on Hanak hooks. Thanks for the comments! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
I love Hanak. I have one of their competition reels. I had a question about it and sent an email to their info email address. I got a response from Mr. Hanak himself and he solved my issue.
There are many variables at play, Brad, but my thinking is similar to Tim Flagler's in this video: ruclips.net/video/2QDwZ1eG-us/видео.html Tim shows some great shots and exclaims, "Jig hooks with a slotted tungsten bead ride at an angle...and tend to ride downstream with the bead leading and hook point riding up." Based on his thinking, they are less likely to snag. My experiences support that thinking, too. So jig hooks it is! ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com
or just keep your nymph hooks and use inverting tungsten beads. It provides the same affect without obstructing the hook gap. The beads are also more dense than the same size slotted bead.
Love using jig hooks for droppers. I've tied several variants of Frenchies . How do you modify traditional nymph patterns to work on jig hooks? Do you use jig hooks for emerger style nymphs like RS2, Barr's Emerger, WD40, etc.?
Where will you place the weight, Warren? I think I would advise you to tie a few and see how they ride based on placing weight in differing locations. Very interesting for sure! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Yeah they don't snag the bottom they snag fish and should be illegal everywhere. It's not fly fishing. Watch even the best can't resist the temptation to give it the snag jerk at the end of every drift. Everyone that has ever fished for salmon knows how to drag across the face and snag. Shameless

As mentioned in the video, please share your favorite hooks, Peter, no matter the brand. Over the last five years, I have used many brands of hooks, and for jig hooks, my opinion is that Hanak are the best...hence the recommendation. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
No, because I am a fly fisherman and not a euronympher, and not a jig fisherman. I also think that fly fishing for trout shouldnt get too far away from the classics or it loses it's soul. The fact that the biggest thing in euronymphing now is going full mono and designing spinning gear for it, just turns me right off
Appreciate your thoughts, and there are lots of styles in fly fishing for everyone to choose from. That's what I love the most about our sport, we each get to choose our own path. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Hi Steve, you're right, in that many are tied "in the round." Their effectiveness speaks volumes, as there are a handful of confidence patterns I regularly turn to. Though I will say, there are NO similarities between a Mop and a Perdigon! ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com
@@TimCammisa I would love to do an experiment involving one euro nymph pattern and one tungsten bead just tied to a hook to see which one would fish better. When I tie oversized tungsten beads I feel they are keying in on the bead as opposed to the body

Thanks Tim enjoy all your words of wisdom.
Love Tim's enthusiasm, but I felt in watching this video that it is an infomercial for Hanak's hooks and Tim's fly tying book...

As usual, another great video on fly fishing & tying.
Thanks so much, Paul, I really appreciate the kind words. All good on your end? Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Great info Tim Thanks
You got it, Brian, thanks for the kind words! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
I love hanak . Strongest by farrr . I south Africa we catch yellows in the vaal and they hold them tight.

Tim, send me your old non-jig hooks. Happy to help find them a new home...and catch fish! #troutandfeather
Totally agree. I use a different brand but I'd say 90% of my nymphs are tied on jig hooks.
I love Hanak. I have one of their competition reels. I had a question about it and sent an email to their info email address. I got a response from Mr. Hanak himself and he solved my issue.
Glad to know the customer service remains top notch, Gary! How is all on your end? Tim www.troutandfeather.com
@@TimCammisa Great! Heading to Montana next week.
Fulling Mill has tungsten drop beads that will do the same with a standard nymph hook.
There are lots of names for that bead...and they are NICE! Thanks for pointing that out and I hope all is well. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Dom at Troutbitten says that all nymph hooks ride point up? Is he wrong?

Tim, great info. What are you thoughts on using inverted beads on existing hooks versus by the new jig hooks.
I really dont like them, the ones i have gotten are to heavy wire, do you have any reccomendations for "jig hooks" in the .54mm range?
Jig hooks had me from upside down.
Ha ha ha...very well played! ;-)
I really like jig hooks but I wish they would make slotted brass beads. I'm not into euro nymphing so alot of times tungsten is just too heavy.
Great thoughts, Garrett, and I will be sure to look into this! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
I agree mostly, but some of them don't have much of a hook gap.
On the chalkstreams I fish, beaded flies are often not allowed. What are your thoughts on a jig hook with an unbranded nymph?
Where will you place the weight, Warren? I think I would advise you to tie a few and see how they ride based on placing weight in differing locations. Very interesting for sure! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Fellow angler : I'm a euro nympher.
Me: So you're a jig fisherman.
HA HA HA! If that group is combined with Bob Clouser, I'd say the company is great! ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com

sounds like an advertisement for Hanak hooks

Not only do I tie my nymphs on jig hooks, but I also tie all of my egg flies on a jig hook.
You and me both, Danny! Thanks for the comment and I hope to hear from you on some of my other videos. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Interesting. Looking forward to seeing why I should throw away my nymph hooks.
Don't throw them away, I will take any you're no longer using! ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com
dont
Nice, BUT all hooks ride hook point up, even unweighted. It's true.
Don't throw your nymph hooks away , just use offset beads , has the same effect of making the fly swim point up.
Agreed, Keith, awesome suggestion! Or send me any old nymph hooks. ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com

European nymphing is zig heil style as we call it. That is not true fly fishing.
lol kinda disagree
