Thanks Jim! I do hope to make a more detailed on in the future, but I've been meaning to do this basic one for a couple of months now and just got around to it. Lots of ideas in the hopper but I'll eventually get to them all! Cheers. -Matt
Thanks for your video Matt and for taking the time to compile the hook chart. your efforts to educate beginners is greatly appreciated and helps to clear the mystery fog a little more
Thanks Dave! I'm glad it is helpful. Now if you go download the hook charts, you'll see it can get crazy. Just ignore all the craziness and learn a few basic sizes and you'll be good to go!
Thanks Larry! I appreciate your support my friend. (Watching the videos and commenting certainly helps the channel grow and allows me to eventually do more for our community.) Cheers!
Nice job Matt. The more you talk about it, the more I realize just how much there is to hooks. I think you could easily do an hour just explaining the basics lol. Cheers
Thanks matt these charts are what every tier needs when I started it was mostly mustard and of course it was to get hooks made prior to W W 2 for the good steel and if you found them you bought as many as you could afford thus still have quite a few but must tiers use anything but mustard
I have now watched this video twice. Great information. I took your advice on the Saber hooks. Definitely a hard to beat deal. Very grateful for your message and help. I did take one extra step. I added the size #8 hooks as well to your recommendation. Thank you Matt. You are keeping me on a straight path here while getting started.
I sure would have loved to have seen this years ago, great information for beginners and a really awesome review for older tiers. I love what you are doing on this channel!
Thank you brother! (I shouldn't admit it, but it took me a couple years to figure out this basic stuff. I would tie on any hook if it was close enough to the right size.) Thanks for the support my friend. :-)
Hi Sir Matt, I really liked this video it really helped me out, still being a rookie fly tier. I can honestly say I needed this so thank you. I hope their will be more to come on many different topics Sir. Hope your weekend was great. Till next time.
Thanks Edward! I've been wanting to make this one for a while, hoping it could help new tiers. You won't need these before long; you're going to be an expert!
@@SavageFlies thank you sir. I sent a email with a video a buoyancy test on Bounty Hunter I hope you got it, I hope it's supposed to sink. You know that would be a good video the way different flies act in the water that's moving streamers nymph and wet flies
Thanks for this Matt, I was going to suggest this video but found it, this is really helpful for a beginner like myself, not wanting too many to choose from!
You got that right! It can certainly be overwhelming. I'm looking at my pegboard with a few hundred packs of hooks hanging on it, and I find that I use the same 6-7 different models for most of my tying!
28 - 32 hooks. Better get out an electron microscope. I did know a guy who tied 32s. It was a specialty. Dunno why. His glasses made coke bottle bottoms look like flat lenses on a pair of glasses. If you could see his flies, I’ll bet they were beautiful. But then, I never could quite see them. Thank you for the hook chart links. Will definitely download them.
Thank you, Matt this is a nice visual chart. Hook size and fly types can be confusing. Mostly, I stick with all of my old Mustad hooks. I understand how to tie on Mustads some are now becoming very vintage LOL. I have some size 9''s 11's 13's and 15's and 19's that's really crazy for the normal USA gauged hooks.
Thank you for the wisdom!!! One thing I have had a problem with is buying streamer hooks and tungsten cone head beads that don’t fit. Even have I bend back the barb the bead can’t make the corner. Any wisdom on this?
Hi matt in my years of tying and teaching flybtying. My hook range was frow 0/2 to size 32 I would Tie a 32. Royal coachman to. Show it’s all in proportion
Holy cow Daniel, I can't even imagine being able to see a #32. My range so far is from a 1/0 (the big saltwater fly I did earlier this week) to a #22 Elk Hair Caddis. I could probably manage a zebra midge type fly smaller than that but I can't imagine tying a dry fly smaller than a 22. Maybe someday. :-)
Hi Matt!Been wondering about different styles of hooks.I know some patterns need a different style to look right in the water but would like to know the difference.Such as curved as to hopper as to scud as to nymph.
Really good solid info, as usual with your videos. Didn't find the link to download hook conversion charts - that can be really confusing for beginners like me. Where can I find those? Thanks for all your great work
I've been looking allot at hooks lately. I think some of the barbless dry fly and wet fly hooks look really nice. But I see the gap is much bigger. Is there really a difference?
Thomas- good question. I'm finding it hard to find barbless hooks in all the sizes I want to use. Firehole has some, but I'm having to use a lot of Saber hooks. Some folks think they're not real high quality but they're pretty economical and I've never had one break on me-- except maybe when I'm hung up on a rock. They're a lot cheaper than Tiemco or Mustad and I do okay with them. Speaking of the gap, some of the Firehole competition hooks seem to have a wider gap, which is confusing since a wider gap should make it a bigger hook size. But for the Saber brand, a size 12 with a barb and without a barb in the same style look exactly the same (except for the barb of course). I'd recommend taking a look at them and see if they'll work for you. (You can get them at the Fly Shack.)
Can you tie flies using the octopus hooks with turned out point? How would it affect the action of the flies. I have lots of 1/0 hooks. I mostly tie streamers for bass on spinning gear. Love the channel by the way. To the point without all the work up.
Yes, possibly a nick in your bobbin. Is it a ceramic tip? Have you tried the same bobbin holder with different thread? I'd try it with a different 210 and if that thread is also breaking, it's likely the bobbin.
Well thank you Calvin! I don't tie much saltwater and have never used the Gamakatsu Octopus hooks but I have tied a few bass flies on regular circle hooks which I would think are about the same.
I'm still thinking about putting together a small fishing rig for a bug-out-kit. Could be a good video for your channel. Do you know if there are any videos on the subject already? I imagine there are lots of how-to videos on what to put in a bug-out kit, but not really what to put in a kit if you had to hole up in the mountains with rivers as a potential food source.
Well they can come in handy. Of course if you're online while you're tying, you can find anything instantly. But I find it nice to have these in my drawer right under my vise. Kind of old school I guess. :-)
Hi Matt, and thanks for all your videos and taking the time to share your experience. Tight lines.
Awwwwwwww..... thank you, thank you, thank you. You have read my mind, going to download you charts now and looking forward to part two maybe?
Thanks Jim! I do hope to make a more detailed on in the future, but I've been meaning to do this basic one for a couple of months now and just got around to it. Lots of ideas in the hopper but I'll eventually get to them all! Cheers. -Matt

Thank you very much, this is exactly what I needed to hear
I have always wondered what the numbers on the hooks were
Thanks

Good hook info 👍

I have never even SEEN an odd numbered size hook. I guess I haven't been tying long enough. :-)
A video about the fur bug or the brown roach fly would be pretty interesting but you might have trouble finding information about them.
I'll see what I can dig up. I have never heard of either of them though. Do you have any pictures??
thanks matt i need to get more kinds of hooks...
Don't be like me Joe and go too crazy with them. I have so many, but end up using the same half dozen styles and sizes over and over again. :-)
