Las legiones del Rin y del Danubio, las legiones de Oriente y la guardia pretoriana desenvainaron sus espadas y marcharon a la batalla unas contra otras para defender a su pretendiente. Galba se rebeló y se autoproclamó emperador, pero pronto se ganó la enemistad de los pretorianos y del pueblo romano. Posteriormente, Otón y Vitelio se rebelaron contra Galba y lo ejecutaron, para después combatir entre ellos y alzarse Vitelio como vencedor gracias al apoyo de las legiones del Rin y de las del Danubio.
Finalmente será Vespasiano, general de las legiones de Oriente, quien se rebele por última vez y acabe con Vitelio, dando fin al nefasto año de los 4 emperadores. Una nueva guerra civil romana había finalizado.
