Great video Drew. The areas you traveled. I cannot wait to get back to Colorado and do some fly fishing. I have a tied a few of your fly patterns for the trip.
Would love to get up in this area and check out the Great Burn as they call it (because of the 1910 fire). I'm studying the Cairn Cartographics new Great Burn map they put out last year that has awesome detailed shaded relief in feet at 1:63,000. Also, their North and South Selway-Bitterroot maps are equally nice. Such a massive roadless, rugged, mountainous area on the Idaho side in the Selway-Bitterroot, Great Burn and River Of No Return wildernesses. I'm not a big fisherman, used to be when I was younger, but lost the patience. I think if I got into fly fishing I would like it again. To me it would be synonymous to bow hunting.
Don't know what river this is. But looks a lot like the headwaters of the Yankee Fork of the Salmon River. It feeds in to the Salmon River at Sunbeam. Which is 10 miles or so downstream from Stanley. Or maybe over the dirt road mountain pass on Loon Creek, that feeds into the River of No Return.
Completely random question Drew, what’s your take on shades? It’s just all good. There’s so much good wild trout water in central and north central Idaho. A few years ago, I grabbed a small hotel room where a bunch of fire fighters were staying. It was cool to listen to them. The whole experience is fascinating. While you were working your way into Idaho, my nephew and I fished some of the Wyoming ranges. Different Cutt subspecies in those drainages. I prefer Central and north central Idaho. Honestly, I prefer the smaller streams like you fished in earlier video posts.

Hi Drew. Apologies if this info is covered in other videos - but I was wondering how you manage your GoPro while casting vs releasing the fish. I get that while casting, you may have your camera on a chest harness maybe, but then when you're releasing the fish, the camera is catching your profile from the side, and then following the net and fish as you release it, which means it can't be in a fixed position. Do you have the camera on a stick somehow that you attach to a harness? And then then where do you get a third hand to man the camera and move it to follow the action, while your other two hands are messing with the net and fish? And if on a stick, aren't you afraid of dropping it in the current? Again, maybe you've covered this elsewhere, in which case just refer me to that video, please. Nicely done. Thanks.
No worries, never really done a video on it but I wear it attached to my hat...this way it's out of the way and sees what I see. I just take it off to talk into it or get a release. You can see it in this video...ruclips.net/video/LBPBe6F5hf0/видео.html...I take a bad fall and crack it. It's basically an old action hat mount but in a different hat. Which reminds me I need to replace it lol!
Ok…I am not a commentor but I have really wanting to ask you some questions…first off, amazing content. I live in CO and love the backcountry and outdoors. Secondly, you are obviously an accomplished angler thank you for sharing that with us. So….what is your “preriver” process. It feels as if you throw on a dropper rig, hit the water and catch a fish on the first cast and usually every subsequent cast? Are you flipping over rocks? Using a seine? Trying different depths before the camera rolls? Are you scouting the area the day before? Maybe this is my inexperience talking? I am a total newbie. One been at this for about a year. No intentions of quitting. Would love some tips on how to approach the water better. Thanks…once again…awesome content. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the comment...really helps with the youtube algorithm! So, no...I live outside a cypress swamp in south Arkansas so there are no scouting trips. I just start looking at maps and use my experience to decide where to go. As far as flies...I can usually pick what to start with based on stream type...freestone, tailwater or spring creek. There are some similarities but generally each has it's own bugs. Tailwaters...small flies...midges/baetis. Freestones...stoneflies, mayflies, terrestrial's. Spring creeks....a little of everything with some scuds and sow bugs. Caddis live pretty much everywhere. I rarely flip rocks...unless it's just to see stream health or better match what I have in my box. Unless I'm fishing high pressured areas and in that case it can get very technical. But generally speaking the more remote the less technical it gets. I have videos on my channel that could help. All listed my tips, techniques playlist. A few you'll find are A video on every fly I used on my 2 month road trip... I walk thru how approach on small streams... I walk thru how to effectively nymph a run... I walk thru the indicators I use and why I chose them... I walk thru how to catch trophy fish in catch in release areas...

Another great video Drew! It looks like you hit the season just right. Not to take away from your skills, but in my experience these free flowing runoff fed, wild cutthroat streams are all about timing. You get skunked when the river is blown out and turbulent. Cutties will slam a bare hook when the clarity, flow volume, and temperature are just right.
Haha, trust me...anyone who's been fishing for any length of time better understand how timing and seasons, have a direct influence on your success. Chase redfish...you better be dialed in on tides and moon phases, run off with hatches, bass...if you're pounding the banks in January you're going to have a rough day unless you're in south FL! There's a reason I head west in the summer and tailwaters in the winter!
Over the years i have done more than my share of exploring this state on roads that are more goat trails than actual roads, just to fly fish in remote areas. I tip my hat to you, not familiar with the state and by yourself, and you went all the way up there and I love it!!!...great video and great job, i have become a subscriber keep the vids coming.

Looked like more than a few of those bad boys wanted to get you down into the rocks. Awesome fish and stream. Your arms must have been ready to fall off lol.
Another Fantastic stream. Idaho looks like the stuff of fly fishing dreams! Some of those Cutties have girth. Love the pinkish and orange bellies they have. Are those their spawning colors? Well done Drew.
Was such a great trip! Should be well past the spawn in July which is when I was there...but probably a few still colored up. Definitely not an expert tho!

What did you think about the condition of the dirt roads? Just got back from fishing in Wyoming where they had 2" of rain and roads just got treacherous and got stuck 20 miles back in on a dirt road. There's a reason I head west in the summer and tailwaters in the winter!
Great stuff, looks familiar
Those were some great trout!!
Need more like it in my life!
us workin stiffs thank you for posting these vids. i’m enjoying this vid drinking a beer on my train ride home.
Haha, that's the way to do it!
Your technique is flawless.
Well done Drew! 🔥
He Drew, wondering what type of indicator you use mainly?
Dry-dropper here...talk about it in part 27 linked in the description. I have another video on my channel that goes in to the 3 types of indi's I use and why I chose them based on application.
If this is where I think, I love it up there and have caught some giant bulltrout there as well
See any big bull trout?
Nice video, what kind of bite indicator do you have on the line?
My top shelf hopper...shown in the, the only flies you need on a summer road trip out west...linked in description.
Looks like a great trip! Grew up fly fishing and have now taught my kids. Off to Montana and Idaho in June
Looked like more than a few of those bad boys wanted to get you down into the rocks. Awesome fish and stream. Your arms must have been ready to fall off lol.
Those wild fish are all heart and fins with an attitude to match lol!
Great vid! Any idea what makes some cutts so much more red than others? Is it something they're eating, male vs female, etc?
Another Fantastic stream. Idaho looks like the stuff of fly fishing dreams! Some of those Cutties have girth. Love the pinkish and orange bellies they have. Are those their spawning colors? Well done Drew.
Was such a great trip! Should be well past the spawn in July which is when I was there...but probably a few still colored up. Definitely not an expert tho!
What size rod and tackle you recommend for this area, going in the fall! Thanks
Got 2 vids on it. The only flies you need on a summer road trip out west and I'll show u why u need these 3 rods
Awesome spot. So jealous!
I have no questions drew, all I can say is you would have to knock me out to get me out of that area. I sit and watch and say woooow!! enjoyed watching. Until next time. 👍👍👍
It was hard to leave...if my family wasn't meeting me in SLC...and I was their ride...I might still be there lol!
I grew up in Idaho and can say now days it's MUCH harder to fish because it's been publicized so much.
Truly amazing....
Truly!
Wow. WOW. It would be really hard to leave that river! We're a couple of those cuts in the 18-20" class? Or fat 16"ers? Amazing place, even with the smoke. Thanks!
Definitely had some of both and I didn't show any in the first fish fish of the day class which were all over the stream. Just an incredible stream!
Is this North of Ketchum?
Amazing. Magical. This might be one of the the most perfect trout streams I've seen in the US! Great job drew with the video and fishing skills.
Oh, in future please add captions to videos for us old deaf fishin musicians.
Awesome!
What did you think about the condition of the dirt roads? Just got back from fishing in Wyoming where they had 2" of rain and roads just got treacherous and got stuck 20 miles back in on a dirt road. I was just curious what the road conditions were like at this place and other places you fished in Idaho. Thank you.
Did the direction of the current change?
Doesn't get much better than that!
Not in my book for sure!
I’ve flyfished this stretch a few times.
And they taste good too😊
Wow Drew, looks like middle fork
Are you fishing yarn indicator-nymph for this video? Not much top water action? Can’t tell if that’s a hopper or not. Great videos, man!
Nope, same hopper/dropper rig I talked about in part 27...linked below!
That’s some beautiful country. Officially jealous of you here in Texas
Damn. I think after all these vids, im now looking for a 10ft 4wt lol. Awesome video yet again.
My all time favorite length and weight!
Some quality Westslope cutties out of that stream.
Was a good day!
