OK, so they saw neither. They saw footprints of hoofed animals, but none live. According to Sarah: "We were late for the animals as they had migrated to another area (probably because it was about to snow and they knew it but we didn’t!)"
Thank you for your input. Andy and Thad just weighed in, having done their own research after the trip. They say yes, possibly. From Andy: "Ya they seem very similar and are often interchangeable, might just be a demographic thing, it’s confusing to say the least." And from Thad: "Only way to truly tell is measuring the caudal penduncle. Artic char has a slimmer one than the Dolly, but even a wildlife biologist is challenged by the difference."

Those are Dolly Varden Char not arctic char
