Your mistake was in asking “how are you doing?” Is why he was asking all these questions in the first place. If you just avoid looking at them and keep your head down you never have to talk to them. I witnessed just this week in Paris coming out as an English couple said hello to border agents and was immediately stopped for a bag check randomly while everyone minding their business walked past just fine.

Obviously you do not have to have a very high IQ nor the ability to speak English all that well, to be a security officer at this airport. I would have not called him "sir" either, but that is no criticism of the passenger, he is no doubt trained to be respectful. But what an embarrassment the security guy is to the airport in general. You may not agree with the reason they are going to dangerous areas for their country but it would be hard not to admire the courage. The Security guy is so surly. Attitude and everything. No thank you for your service. I was flying into Cairns , Australia from Guam on Continental Micronesia. They had a customs and immigration rep wandering the baggage claim area asking random passengers many of the same questions this guy was asked. The guy was so polite and friendly, joked a bit regarding the plane we had flown in on. He asked me if this was my first trip to Australia. I told him no, it was my 8th. Asked where we were staying, what we planned on doing etc. Told him I had 8 Australian friends flying in from Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane for the 10 days and he was happy with all the answers, wished us a enjoyable stay in Cairns and left. A much nicer experience for me than this poor guy endured.

There must have been something going on that day. One scenario I could imagine is they're looking for someone who skipped bail or someone with a warrant and the police received information that that person may have been on that flight. Normally, nobody hassles you after you're cleared to board the aircraft.
Yep, happens to me all the time even when I travel with my wife who’s American. But I’m not. And I have an accent. So, 9/10 I get “randomly” pulled aside and asked these many questions and more. I get it, it’s all security. But it’s always the same...and it gets old. Funny thing is I’m a Federal Official And have been cleared by homeland security, FBI, and Health and Human Services on a yearly basis because of my job. So again, it gets old. Can’t even enjoy leaving and coming home peacefully for/after a vacation.
FWIW, I've traveled many times internationally and have never been questioned/grilled like this. Ever. Not even close. There are always a few questions -- length of stay, purpose of trip, etc. But as other posters have mentioned, I think the reason that the same question was asked in different ways was to ensure that the answer(s) didn't change.
I've been flying for years. I've learned that if you mind your manners and have a good attitude when talking to security, they tend to be much more friendly and flexible. Most will even help you get to your plane faster through shortcuts. So always be nice to security weather you love or hate it.

Using "sir" and "ma'am" acknowledges you see them as equals or as "higher" than yourself (when it applies). "Bro", "dude" and "pal", among others are for friendly situations only (friendly being informal interaction with friends/family). Learn any other language and there is clear formal and informal pronouns; in English, the formal pronouns are "sir" and "ma'am".

One person doesn’t line up and they’ll be looking for him for 5 minutes then theres always people in a rush who aren’t going to be willing to sit down until they’re supposed to get in line and are just going to stand up in line. Trust me the way it is right now is the most effective way possible I could possibly think is out there. It will take usually around 20-30 minutes this way (all depending in the size of the airplane) where as I honestly think that would take close to an hour to do. You’ve also still got to put people with disabilities or children travelling alone on the plane in their seats first too. Maybe it would work in a perfect world where everyone would be there on time and cooperative with what they are told. But it never will.
I have. Especially when flying to/from Mexico. I always just assumed it was because those flight routes were high-risk for drug traffickers. There’s probably a reason why they chose to screen folks boarding this flight to Japan.

I was also stationed in Japan, US Army Hospital, Honshu, closed to 12 years back and forth conus to Japan. I’m also retired Army, now traveling to Japan about once a year. I landed in Yokota Air Force Base when I first arrived. Love Japan.

That is a ridiculous way to look at the situation. That CBP officer (possibly HSI... hard to tell as he was in plain clothes... CBP doesn't usually have plain clothes officers) was doing his job, do you also think it is disrespectful to make him go through security? There are plenty of servicemen that have done terrible shit while in and out of uniform, they are not special... they are human, and do not get special treatment.

john walker not sure. This might be a random screening. However, CBP officers are trained to look for certain details and behaviors during these interviews so the redundant questions are to make sure your story sticks. If it didn't you'd be in trouble

Generally America's law enforcement agents, compared to their peers in all the developed parts of the world, are aggressive and tending to be rude. They come across as "I own your rights and life." A British agent (for example) could ask more questions but in a very friendly conversational way. The agent behaved more like a drill sergeant quizzing a new military recruit

I did once. Got pulled over at the Detroit/Windsor border leaving the US by CBP. They searched my car and asked me why I had Visine and baseball bat. Visine was for dry eyes and the baseball bat was for hitting baseballs. Called me a smart ass and I was on my way. CBP are the worst.
Years ago I got stoped at my local airport by police on a flight to Amsterdam. He laughed when I told him why I was going then wanted details more for his own personal research I think.
That officer was completely unprofessional, he was aggressively rude, asked questions that's none of his business and he never thanked the person for his service to the country.

This was not a "security squad." These were US Customs and Border Protection Officers, fully within their province to be asking these questions. Detailed questioning of outbound passengers usually occurs when they are looking for a specific individual that may be trying to leave the United States without detection.
The United States is slowly turning in to a police state; they have way too much power. I understand that they were security, but the "let me see your papers" thing never happens in the UK.
Bullshit - you have teams of immigration enforcement officers that set up camp anywhere (often nowhere near entry ports) and are authorised to have stop and check your status if they claim any subjective probable cause: e.g. he looked nervous when he saw us there.
Border security agents can act like this anywhere. I just watched one where an Australian agent demanded to look through someone's laptop to search for child porn, and the reason for the hassle was because the person didn't have a lot of money in their accounts.

There must have been something going on that day. One scenario I could imagine is they're looking for someone who skipped bail or someone with a warrant and the police received information that that person may have been on that flight. Normally, nobody hassles you after you're cleared to board the aircraft.
I was thinking the same shit too because I have travelled so many times outside of Canada and never been questioned once while leaving the country.

Yep, happens to me all the time even when I travel with my wife who’s American. But I’m not. And I have an accent. So, 9/10 I get “randomly” pulled aside and asked these many questions and more. I get it, it’s all security. But it’s always the same...and it gets old. Funny thing is I’m a Federal Official And have been cleared by homeland security, FBI, and Health and Human Services on a yearly basis because of my job. So again, it gets old. Can’t even enjoy leaving and coming home peacefully for/after a vacation.
FWIW, I've traveled many times internationally and have never been questioned/grilled like this. Ever. Not even close. There are always a few questions -- length of stay, purpose of trip, etc. But as other posters have mentioned, I think the reason that the same question was asked in different ways was to ensure that the answer(s) didn't change.
perhaps the " i was stationed part" is important...as they want to make sure that a soldier isn´t go " off duty" just by leaving? I don´t now.

I've been flying for years. I've learned that if you mind your manners and have a good attitude when talking to security, they tend to be much more friendly and flexible. Most will even help you get to your plane faster through shortcuts. So always be nice to security weather you love or hate it.

Learn any other language and there is clear formal and informal pronouns; in English, the formal pronouns are "sir" and "ma'am".

One person doesn’t line up and they’ll be looking for him for 5 minutes then theres always people in a rush who aren’t going to be willing to sit down until they’re supposed to get in line and are just going to stand up in line. Trust me the way it is right now is the most effective way possible I could possibly think is out there. It will take usually around 20-30 minutes this way (all depending in the size of the airplane) where as I honestly think that would take close to an hour to do. You’ve also still got to put people with disabilities or children travelling alone on the plane in their seats first too. Maybe it would work in a perfect world where everyone would be there on time and cooperative with what they are told. But it never will.

I have. Especially when flying to/from Mexico. I always just assumed it was because those flight routes were high-risk for drug traffickers. There’s probably a reason why they chose to screen folks boarding this flight to Japan.

I was also stationed in Japan, US Army Hospital, Honshu, closed to 12 years back and forth conus to Japan. I’m also retired Army, now traveling to Japan about once a year. I landed in Yokota Air Force Base when I first arrived. Love Japan.

That is a ridiculous way to look at the situation. That CBP officer (possibly HSI... hard to tell as he was in plain clothes... CBP doesn't usually have plain clothes officers) was doing his job, do you also think it is disrespectful to make him go through security? There are plenty of servicemen that have done terrible shit while in and out of uniform, they are not special... they are human, and do not get special treatment.

john walker not sure. This might be a random screening. However, CBP officers are trained to look for certain details and behaviors during these interviews so the redundant questions are to make sure your story sticks. If it didn't you'd be in trouble

Generally America's law enforcement agents, compared to their peers in all the developed parts of the world, are aggressive and tending to be rude. They come across as "I own your rights and life." A British agent (for example) could ask more questions but in a very friendly conversational way. The agent behaved more like a drill sergeant quizzing a new military recruit

I did once. Got pulled over at the Detroit/Windsor border leaving the US by CBP. They searched my car and asked me why I had Visine and baseball bat. Visine was for dry eyes and the baseball bat was for hitting baseballs. Called me a smart ass and I was on my way. CBP are the worst.

Years ago I got stoped at my local airport by police on a flight to Amsterdam. He laughed when I told him why I was going then wanted details more for his own personal research I think.
That officer was completely unprofessional, he was aggressively rude, asked questions that's none of his business and he never thanked the person for his service to the country.

This was not a "security squad." These were US Customs and Border Protection Officers, fully within their province to be asking these questions. Detailed questioning of outbound passengers usually occurs when they are looking for a specific individual that may be trying to leave the United States without detection.
