  • Four great pedals - but what do we really want to know?
Welcome to the show! We’ve had a lot of artist shows just lately… and we love them. But it is called That Pedal Show after all, and there are many here among us who feel that life is but a… oh hang on… there are many here among us who miss a good old dig through some new stompers.
We have decided to focus our digging on one or two simple - hopefully obvious - questions that the official demo and review videos probably won’t ask. Now then, regular viewers will know that ‘focus’ isn’t exactly a key strength of That Pedal Show, so we’re easing ourselves in gently via the usual tangents and banter. What we eventually get around to asking is:
    - Does the new Ross Distortion sound like an original old one from the late 1970s?
    - Does the Thorpy The Dane MkII’s new boost actually sound like the Heavy Water?
    - Does the Electro-Harmonix Nano Deluxe Memory Man sound anything like Dan’s original?
    - And what is a Lo-Fi reverb anyway? Erm, using the Caroline Météore and UA Golden as our yardsticks.
    Massive thanks to…
    - Jonny Duffett for giving us the old Ross pedal.
    - Gav Thorpe for the trade on the Marshall Bluesbreaker combo.
    - Charlie Higginson of Riffers Brixham for the deal on the Johnny Jag!
If you can, enjoy the show!

Duuuuudes, thank you so so much for the love, you’re a couple of beautiful people. That is the way I like it, 100% and a DP sandwich everyday 😅. And the DP boost side is really designed to give you that huge fat clean when you’re playing alone, which we do a lot in our videos of course, it makes any clean boring amp sound heavenly:), and it makes any Strat or tele bloom, instant Mayer tone, it’s like an always on thing. I will run it level at 9 and lows at 3 for that.. And if I wanna use it as a boost for the drive side I would do it the other way around. But now the HC clipping is on it I love using that when I boost the drive side, exactly for the reason you guys say. The other thing I do is have drive pedal on each side of the Dane and that way I have the boost after a drive (like you guys like it, you weirdoes :). Thank you again and let’s hang soon please. Luv ya💜

The main thing about the original Ross line was that I was young and money was scarce and Ross and DeArmond pedals were cheaper than MXR.

So glad to see a Caroline pedal on here. Meteore is so unique, Somersault is a lush chorus/vibrato, despite being labelled also as 'low fi'.' Would love to hear you play the Shigeharu fuzz too, its basically a tube screamer into big muff sound, love how it retains clarity and fuzziness. The labeling on the pedals can be a bit annoying, but they're always a lot of fun

I got the Meteore and Kilobyte, about a decade ago, and the Kilobyte has never left my board.
The Meteore only leaves the board, if I’m in a cover band, and I need very specific reverbs, that are easier to do with a multi-effect.
Though, I’ve gotten through cover gigs with just the Meteore.
It works like different types of delay, based on how the controls are set, and it’s nice having the havoc switch for getting cool sound effects, or a ending and even with the Kilobyte, I can set it up to do very unique lead tones.
      Killer builder.

The Meteore low fi takes one to sixties film and, if you were alive to hear it, a low fi experience. This does a stellar job of recreating that "budget" "low fidelity" recording era. It really does take you to a place in time.

I really enjoy this format. It's not about "better or worse." It's more educational for the listener to hear the differences and similarities to understand what is right for them.

In the early 70’s I liked fuzz face, Maestro phaser, Echoplex and cranked Marshalls. Today my simple board is Wah (Real McCoy), Anologman Sunface (NKT), Believe (octave), & FoxRox Aquavibe. My amp (Carr Rambler) has a great reverb & tremolo. When I want experimental I have a chain of pedals that range from Strymon to Chase Bliss to Keeley to (fill in the blank) which are on three different loaded pedalboards that can be connected in any order. The one constant is that I still prefer physical pedals over plug-ins.

Your recent look back at pedals you haven’t used in a while inspired me to do the same and I have fallen back in love with the DOD Rubberneck. After watching this episode, I would love Dan’s take on the Rubberneck compared with his old DMM - not as a replacement or clone, but if the question is “what modern-production, reliable pedal could do *that thing* for me in a live setting,” I think you owe the Rubberneck a deep dive to see how it does.

  • @andrewr2650

I think the words you were both looking for with the memory man comparisons are “it’s very close but not exactly the same” and Dan has had his for so long and he knows it so well he immediately keys into the “it not exactly same”. Someone who didn’t have that experience could probably play the new one and be really happy with it.
For the record, what I really heard on the recording was it seemed like the modulation intensity was almost volume dependent old one (to my ear the notes smoothed as they were held on the old one) and the new one the modulation was very consistent. Which could be very different than in person.

Apparently there is a way to mod it to control the pre-delay, that would make it even more interesting, but sounded ace as it is. That being said... Dan playing his DMM with the Marrguar was some of my favorite tones I've heard on the show.

As much as I hope the shorter videos will earn you thousands of followers, all the lengthy, tangentheavy episodes is why I cherish you both like dear friends.
    As for suggestions of Old-New.:
    1. Echorec. Binson & T-rex (how did they not call it the echorex😅)
    2. Your own Pedalboards, amps attitudes and guitars. 1997 (or something) vs 2023.

So good to see my favourite reverb pedal on here, just the best guy and range of pedals.

I haven’t bought a pedal in a long time. In fact I can’t remember when. I got the HX Stomp back in early 2022 to facilitate recording but before that I’m not sure. I’m happy with what I’ve got so not overwhelmed by all the stuff coming out. It’s just fun to see how things develop. I have so much I can do with what I’ve got it would be bonkers to buy more stuff for some time. I appreciate I might be in the minority. I’ve been focusing on making music with what I’ve got and I think that will continue.
Please not me - this is just me. And no judgement on anyone else and where they are at.

The thing about the Ross distortion that I never hear people comment is it’s transparency. Everyone says that about the Klon. But if you have a Ross Distortion and dial up the distortion, it sounds exactly like your original guitar signal with just added grit

It would be great to see you guys swing through the UA pedals (the original three) and give those a go again with maybe more depth on them. That Golden Reverberator sounded pretty bloody amazing!

It’s interesting you guys say the DP boost is better in the room but the Heavy Water mode is what you’d want live. Pete has said before that he shaped the DP boost on the Dane in part to suit his needs playing demos for Anderton’s.

I have had a "Drive" sandwich for years - "BOOST-DRIVE_BOOST". Gives loads of options to drive after boost or boost after drive. Sometimes add another drive after the 2nd boost 😀

I've owned several deluxe memory man units over the years, and I noticed that the sound each makes is pretty specific to how the unit is calibrated. I sent a couple in for calibration by EHX at different times, and they came back sounding way better. Still like a memory man, but more clear. I think maybe Dan's old one might need calibration. Yours would sound much more like the nano I bet if it had it done.

On the DMM, i would say that the new one is like a clean version of a photo and the original one is like the same photo with a sepia filter on and instant nostalgic feels

    G'day Dan & Mick,
Thanks for another great episode. I really like the idea for this type of comparo, & I've always liked your comprehensive videos. But, I think that you've missed out on a golden opportunity, particularly with a company like E-HX. Also, you could have asked a 2nd, different question.
You compared Dan's vintage Deluxe Memory Man to E-HX's Memory Man Nano, but you could have included a 2nd guest as well; the current Deluxe Memory Man. It occured to me that Electro-Harmonix sells pedals based on their original pedal designs, then versions of those pedals with additional features, as well as the original models (even if they're updted for modern manufacturing or component availability). So, you could have easily had an old/old vs new/old vs new/new Memory Man comparo.
Mick alluded to the 2nd question, when he commented about component values drifting over time. I'm a motor mechanic, & I know that if I have an HQ Kingswood (Dan must've had 1 too), & it's running rough (Dan again), that the contact points in the ignition could be worn. This gives me 3 options. First, I could leave the points alone, & say; "It's a vintage icon. Sometimes it runs rough", & put up with it. Second, I could clean & reset the points, & hope that the car will keep running smoothly for another 5,000 kms. Or third, I could just replace the points with a new set, & just fix the problem. Guitarists don't seem to see the 3rd option, & only see the 1st option. I can see the value in something like Dan's Deluxe MM, because of its history, & that shouldn't be spoiled (it's like an NFT for the pedal world). But, the 2nd question still remains; "Is the current version a good replacement for the used, worn out vintage item." Which leads to question 2A; "Did the vintage version ever sound like the new version, & are we just going all gooey over components with values that have drifted over time?" For the term "going gooey", you can use "wax poetically", but gooey is more like it.
Both of you are in a position were you can take the 1st opportunity I mentioned, having access to both vintage & new gear. Maybe you could consider it for the next time you have a comparo of this type.
Anyhow, thanks for another great video. I'm looking forward to the next one.
    Andrew
BTW, I like your longer videos - I don't feel so guilty when I write long letters to respond. :)

Great show, as usual… regarding the DMMs, the old one’s transients are much softer, as opposed to the Nano, which has clearer and brighter transients in the repeats.

Hmm, I would have said the opposite. The older one seems to catch more of the front of the note and the frequency range is wider

I wrote this two or three years ago: Dan (you - depending who’s reading) should try the Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water pedal. It wouldn’t surprise me if it would make him (you) really emotional. In a good way of course.
And if you do try one (I’m pretty sure Andertons will have one to try out), please take a little bit of time to understand the controls, because they act highly interactive.
I’m only writing this because I’m so convinced he (you?) will find it amazing. I usually don’t get around trying to convince RUclips content creators what or what not to do. This is my exception to that rule. ❤

Loved the episode as always! I must say I feel the difference between the old / new DMM is negligible, especially in a mix. Impossible to tell the difference. And the old DMM are just so troublesome and noisy it’s a no brainier.

I bought the Nano Deluxe MM this year, after doing quite a bit of research. What I learned is that the Nano vs has brighter repeats than the new full size version, so it might have been a better comparison if you had compared the original against the new full size version, which is supposedly truer to the old ones.
