I graduated nursing school in 2017 and went straight into the OR! I spent 7 months orienting as they dont teach OR in nursing school! I cried weekly and had nightmares before my shift because i felt so dumb. Now i dont even feel like im working when i go into work! ive precepted a few new grads now and i cant believe i am the experienced person. i love sharing my passion for the OR with new grads and feel i really understand what they go thought as it was me just a few years ago. keep your head up! your coworkers are right it takes a year to begin to feel comfortable! its amazing how much you can learn and grow in just a year!

I feel you there. I work nights and I’m new at the hospital and I’ve never work with IV pumps and last night I had to deal with the pump but didn’t know how to run the settings so I asked the charge nurse to show me but even now I’m at home and I’m still getting anxiety about not knowing what to do on the unit with certain equipment… I sometimes cry before my shift and end up missing my kid even more and want to come home… I call it the nurse funk and im praying it ends soon cause sometimes I just want to quit being a nurse

No question is a stupid question when it comes to nursing. I’ve been a nurse for over 20 years and I learn something new every day. If you don’t ask questions then you don’t learn and that’s how mistakes are made. You aren’t meant to know everything especially as a new graduate and people will understand that. Everyone learns at there own pace. Ask questions, don’t be afraid to.

I know this is an older video..but just wanted to say I'm glad to hear u taking your role in the emergency room so seriously 2 months ago i very tragically lost my husband and he passed in the emergency room and the dedication of the nurses and their efforts working on my husband really showed and I'm very thankful that they tried so hard for him and I know they beat themselves up over him not making it..but putting forth that sincere effort really shows from the family perspective!

You’re not alone with the minuscule tasks being daunting at times. We’re with preceptors to learn and everyone was once in our shoes. It’s easier said than done at times, but be kind to yourself and give yourself grace. We’re new nurses and not expected to know it all. We’re learning, day by day, and that will continue for a long time! Thanks for making this video. I’m feeling overwhelmed a lot and just switched to nights. Working my second ever night shift tonight.
I appreciate your content! ❤ Hang in there, beautiful!

Seriously, thank you for these videos. I'm a new grad in the ED and I am so ready to feel like I even sorta kinda know what I'm doing😅 It's a challenging process, but we'll get there! Keep up your positive outlook and just know that you will get there (low-key trying to hype myself up, too). You've got this!!

I love watching you grow! Before you know it all these things you worry about not knowing will become second nature. When you precept your first baby nurse you’ll look back at these videos and smile. You’ll always be learning, within six months you’ll be comfortable, enjoy the ride.

Delegate when you can. Ask for help when you need it. Have no shame in needing help. I know as a new grad you want to prove you can. You have the job already and proved your more than capable. You got this. From a 2 years in nurse. It gets easier with time. Hope this was helpful

omg THANK YOU for that rant after your 3rd night!!! I am a new grad in occupational therapy and can relate 100%! There are so many times where I cried the whole way home and let myself feel dumb and worthless. And everyone says the first year is the hardest and it takes time to learn - sometimes those words help and are comforting and sometimes they don't. I was just ranting to my boyfriend the other night that i can't wait to even somewhat know what i'm doing and not have to constantly think about work on my time off and have nightmares about work. I'm so passionate about my job but the beginning is ROUGH to say the least.

I’m also a new grad orienting in the ER and it is NOT easy. I also make small mistakes which then make me feel incompetent and I continue to make small mistakes throughout my shift. It’s super normal to feel like you don’t know anything sometimes but remember where you first began and where you are now!!
We are so hard on ourselves but like my manager always says, don’t compare yourself to a nurse who has been doing this for YEARSSS.
Good luck and so excited to continue watching your journey.

It is comforting to know we all go through similar experiences as new grads and it is nice to have experienced nurses who take the time to take us under their wing with patience and understanding. I just found your channel because I'm considering going to get my ABSN next year after I finish up some prerequisites and I love that you are able to spin even negative experiences into a positive/learning experience. I know it's easier to say than to practice, but try to be compassionate with yourselves when you find yourself facing those learning curves. You are still new and learning, it's ok to not know things and ask for help! No one ever knows what they are doing even when we get old and crusty 🤪 it is one of the joys of life that we constantly get the jou to learn more and more new things!

When I was a new nurse my precepter was a bully.I report her to another nurse and i got switch to a new precepter which was way better.Well about six month in some seasoned nurses try to test me and I stand up to a few of them. One time I had a crazy shift, day shift and I was so freaking exausted,my brain couldn't think anymore, this incoming night nurse try to intimidate me saying that she was going to write me up over something simple.I was so upset,I look at her and said "go ahead write me up" i grab my things and left. The next time I saw her she was so nice to me.Do not allow condescending people to make you feel less,I always expressed my self in a way to let them know I am not going to tolerate their unprofessional and disrespectful behavior. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP,YOU WILL DO FINE.

IV on the hand go on the surface area and you will get it every-time (35 instead of 90 degree) . Also, good practice is on patients over 80 and obese patients. I loved being an IV nurse.
I am so concerned for having to work a Night Shift! I’ve been a nurse for 5 years and have opted out every night position but for med school I am nervous and know I won’t be able to. I’m glad you transitioned well. Any tips?

Don’t beat yourself up baby girl! Nurses who have been working in the hospital for 4-5 years still do little mistakes like that! You’re never going to be perfect and your always going to be learning new things even years later! You just say OH CRAP, smile it off and correct yourself. Don’t beat yourself up! Sometimes your going to grab the wrong tubing or walk into a patient’s room a million times because you keep forgetting to grab things. It’s all normal!
