    Wow! you can certainly see why a lot of people prefer the old Mk 3 coaches - putting showers over toilet bowls and plastering logos across the windows must be among the silliest things a train operator has ever done.

    Good review, I traveled from Glasgow to London, no heating & if you are above an average size you can't fit in the shower & I found both en-suite & coach toilets hard to fit in, from somebody who is 6'5" tall & large build. Unfortunately, I do prefer the mk3 sleeper coaches, & I traveled the week prior to "wheelgate", & there was an emergency brake application approx 02:30hrs on my journey, but we re-commenced a short while later. The service from the on-train staff was very good.

    I've always wanted to do the sleeper but after watching quite a few videos of the trains it's a pretty much mixed bag of reviews but most have said the ride is very bumpy and uncomfortable so until they sort the ride and heating out it looks like the plane and a nice comfy hotel bed for me which is a pity as I love rail travel and the sleeper is on my bucket list

  • @RIGalleries
    @RIGalleries 5 лет назад +12

    Those high backed seats and that counter really make the lounge room look cramped, compared to the mk2s.
    I haven't been on one of the mk5 sets, yet, but the reviews have (in the main) been poor and I'm in two minds about using the sleeper again. I've seen reviews, from travellers booked into standard berths, and the complaint has been the same, every time, about them being made up for 2 people, despite it being a solo occupancy. I've had that, myself, in the mk3 set and found the inability to sit up straight on the bottom bunk really irritating. I note, from those reviewers, that there's also a fixed ladder to contend with, as well....

    • @BritishTrainsHub
      @BritishTrainsHub  5 лет назад +6

      The MK5’s in my opinion offer less (take away the en-suite) than the MK3’s, for simple things like space, bed side trays, the sink had a lid on it, there was an easy use table for both bunk 1 and 2 but these are now not avalible on MK5’s which is a real shame, the lounge car is very uncomfy and less of a social place too, with it making it less of an open place to attend which makes strangers stay strangers a lot easier and makes it difficult to make friends while travelling

      @@markoobid2005 the current society barely use the sleeper anyhow, the fact i could catch the night train and enjoy the presence of people i never met in what was essentially a time portal was one of my favourite parts of living so to see the end of it is a huge shame to say the least, not to mention the ever increasing prices of such an amazing journey, for me the sleeper is loosing its touch and with the last MK3 runs in sight, all i can say is im glad to have enjoyed what the sleeper truly meant, i myself will avoid using the sleeper after the MK3's unless it becomes a more ideal option over other methods of enjoying and travelling to the highlands,

    Great review. I would add that there is no need for a shower on a train that you are only on for one night. It takes up a lot of space and looked to small anyway with most of the water falling on the wooden panel covering the toilet.

    • @DaveSuperThomas
      @DaveSuperThomas 5 лет назад +1

      If you've got a wash basin in your cabin, and there are shower facilities available at the stations where your Sleeper train journey starts and finishes, do you really need a "Wet Room" in your cabin as well? Which means, of course, that the "Club Rooms" (aka First Class cabins) can't have a communicating door between them for when four friends are travelling together in a small group.

    • @Bobrogers99
      @Bobrogers99 5 лет назад +2

      Some Middle East airlines are putting showers in their planes, so I suppose this high-end train had to keep up - though I agree that they aren't that necessary. And a power shoe brush? That's really reaching. They would get more appeal if they upgraded their menus instead.

    • @rogerexwood6608
      @rogerexwood6608 5 лет назад +2

      No, I think showers is the biggest single thing putting people off moving from planes to the sleeper. If you get on somewhere like Newtonmore or Dalwhinnie, as I have, no chance at all of a shower at the station.

    Pros and cons to everything. Would love to take the Caledonian from London to Scotland and back again to visit my English/Irish/Scottish-American roots. Was in the UK many moons ago but never got to Scotland. Was in Ireland for only 50 minutes at Shannon Airport as a stopover on the way to continental Europe. Never forgot it though, it was magical even at the airport and just as green as they always said it was. Would hope those carriages are well connected. Shower didn't look like it would drain well and didn't look like it had room enough to stand in. Better keep a list of things that need improvement and pass it along to those in charge at the top! Thanks for sharing~

    All the hype Serco had about what these new Mk5's will have and level of comfort, i think like you they are not what they are cracked up to be. Maybe softer seating and more USB and phone sockets at every seat might have worked better than the contravision on the windows. Now ive watched your review, i think i will stick with Virgin West Coast

    • @BritishTrainsHub

      The seats are harder, the beds are the exact same in my opinion, but what kills me the absaloute most is the way the lounge car is designed, its made the sleeper antisocial, oh and the air conditioning comes nothing close to when you wake up in Scotland and have extremely crisp fresh air, i for one will miss the MK3’s and for a last chance go i decided id book 1 last trip on the Highland MK3’s because they’re delayed again,

    Most of the text at the end summed up how I felt about this sleeper, which I did last month. In addition, the staff seemed a lot less friendly, and being sealed in with no windows to open was annoying. I did sleep OK (I thought the beds were comfortable enough), but I would use this service for practicality rather than enjoyment, like all the new trains replacing the decent ones on UK railways.

    The decor looks quite tasteful and warm. A million miles away from the cold sterility of most modern trains! Can't comment on the comfort or usability though, will have to try it and see. The sitting down shower is a bit weird. Think I'd give that a miss. Poor seat comfort and rough ride seem to be an almost universal complaint on the most recent classes though (anyone who has to ride on an IET regularly has my sympathy!). It's strange and a real shame modern builders seem to struggle with these two very basic but critically important aspects when BR got both right so consistently decades ago.

  • @prof.hectorholbrook4692
    @prof.hectorholbrook4692 4 года назад +6

    Reasons for the problem issues you very rightly & interestingly raise:
    Little if any interface between Operator and Design Panel (unlike Mk3s).
    Ride quality poor due to Mk5 wheel diameter being too small (primary) - just like the BR APT; and insufficient Mk5 suspension damping to factor this in (secondary).
    Noise suppression inadequate for budgetary and Procurement Option(s) restrictions.
    Seats hard, shorter beds and narrower corridors for similar reason(s) as immediately above.
    Other lesser interior design & facility inadequacies down to insufficient pre-service testing & rectification through QCI.
    Overall Poor Ride Quality delivered due to inadequate Design Panel & Manufacturer liaison with Operator; plus little or no detailed build-specification & minimum Service Comfort Level Requirements generated by Lessor (Lease Company) in harmony with Operator & manufacturer, TOTALLY UNLIKE BR.
    Highly likely no Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) executed for Level 1 & 2 operational factors & margins, as was the case with Mk3s through BRs Railway Technical Centre (RTC), Derby & its Test Track at Old Dalby. Thus, more accidents/ incidents with Mk5s waiting to happen (not just station over-runs either).
    Coupling non-standardisation is self-evident operational lunacy.
    Using booked traction (Class 92) designed & built primarily for "fast freight" work with much lower top speed than purpose built passenger locomotives (Class 90 being 110mph) results in the new train "Operational Regulation" by signallers quite rightly treating priority of new Sleeper as a freight train, so as for it not to impact on other faster passenger services. Under First Scotrail & BR Regulations, if the Sleeper with its 100mph Mk3s & 110mph Class 90 was running over 20 minutes late, driver was permitted to run at 100mph to re-gain lost time. Signallers would then treat / "Regulate" it as an an Express Passenger and it would be far more likely to be kept on the Fast Lines and regain lost time. Not now: much lower max operating speed means a late running Sleeper would lose its path & have to take its turn, probably behind an All Stations suburban train on the Slow Lines.
    All this, coupled with very late adequate training of on-board & other staff / contractors and the infamous Coach Cleaning / Servicing debacle (dirty sheets etc), means that one ends up with a sort of Fawlty Towers on rails.
    Very sad. Go to European Sleepers and witness the difference.

    I came back from Glasgow to London the other night in the seated coach andfound the ride quite OK, loved the way it stopped without any jerking when we arrived at Euston we didn't know till we pulled up the blind we were there.. Only moan I have is paying £2-70 for a cup of tea.

      No, you stand in front of the loo. You can also sit on the seat created by pulling the loo cover down.

    There is no such thing as a mark 5 sleeper, there was never a mark 4

    • @penninetrains1398
      @penninetrains1398 4 года назад +1

      There was/is Mark 4 stock running on the East Coast Main Line with class 91 locomotives. The new sleepers are structurally and mechanically identical to the Mark 5 day stock operated by Trans-Pennine Express with class 68 locomotives on the Liverpool - Scarborough service - hence Mark 5 sleepers.
