The Aeracer is designed to be injection moulded. The pusher/tractor config allows using 4x identical quarter fuselage parts to make the fuselage. Smaller/cheaper tool.
There are some pretty amazing composites around now that might fit the bill for what we need in FPV. It's something I plan to explore later in the year! -Thomas
Didn't play with it enough to get a feel for it but it didn't feel strange or unintuitive, I'd say the camera positioning and the way the drag changes as you lean over was the overbearing different in feeling, but I have to explore it more! -Thomas
Awesome video team! Would love to see more shredding of that funky quad 😁 could I suggest using dvr from Thomas’s goggles to maybe improve what we see of his flying, rather than the live stream video that was blacking out really bad? (Or was Thomas experiencing that same video feed and just flying through it like a madman?)
Yo Jaxon!! I was thinking the same with the DVR. It was definitely better in my FPV goggles! I think also the livestream drops frames which doesn't help. I think dad is planning on making his own video capture system sometime for these videos but I'm wondering now if I can mask in the fast lap/name over the actual goggle DVR. Guess it's something for us to try next time :D Cheers for the info and hope we can catch up soon! -Thomas
@@BMSWEB ooooh yeah would be sick to try and place your own dvr over the live stream footage, with the lap times and info masked in so it still looks like it’s from the live stream but with way better video haha I wonder if the dropped frames from other pilots would make it look like you’re behind them though?
Can you put a throttle curve on it? Might make it easier to handle? Surely someone smart could work out the aero, certainly vastly different to anything "normal".
I ran my usual throttle curve, but in this case I think it was the way the aero properties changed at different angles of attack is what made it a challenge. I think the best course for me is to get more experience behind such a platform and feel it out how to handle it before I start making settings changes. -Thomas
Its got to feel weird flying a cross configuration vs the X you are used to. Gauging clearances above and below the craft has a big change in terms of judging where the arms are in the camera. Specially after how long you have flown X and have visual and muscle memory locked in. I figured you would tumble long before you did because of that with such minimal flight time on it. Well done. My problem with full bodies on a quad is it they are just one more thing to break in a crash and will add significant cost to replace. That is one of the reasons the DJI racer is such a fail for actual racing among other things but thats a whole other conversation.
I think the camera position definitely played a big role, but I do tend to fly a lot of wacky setups for testing etc with other quads in the background so for me I'll take it as a sign to increase my adaption speed and ability to switch from predictive to reactive flying more quickly! I agree with the full length bodies being a tough thing to carry into real racing. In my own time I've been trying to make something that has a more progressive breakaway rather then being intact or totally snapped, but its tough to find something that ticks all boxes while still using standardised parts 😅 I've learn't a ton this year about structures, aerodynamics and composites though from this testing so hopefully between ourselves or someone else in this community we stumble upon something big soon! -Thomas
@@BMSWEB I think its cool you guys get to do all that as established pilots. For the rest of the general population grubments around the world have pretty much sucked the fun and life out of the hobby over the profits of their corporate sponsors.
Pluses rule! A little lift off the horizontal arms, Vertical arms are like a vertical stabiliser. Pitch control only requires 2 motors to change speed, others stay constant. In this case, the design in pusher/tractor config' so that the body can be made from one quarter part repeated 4 times. This configuration would be weird in a plus. Early 3d printed protos were all regular tractor config and were still pluses, but could be made x as well.

Paul Dumais is one to watch - one smart guy !
i had a 3" version a few years ago, thing was fast as but got cleaned up so easily lmao.
That thing was made for mid-airs
Hey Henry, Barry told me he set you up with a 3", he has the latest 5" proto up and running just recently, hit him up for a rip.
Looks cool, like that everything is contained/covered. Why does it have 2 pusher props?

Fantastic video, guys! And amazing flying, Thomas!!! 😃
Yeah, that thing was flying pretty fast!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Cheers MC!! Wishing you and your fam the very best too!

Interesting concept - nice vid - thanks guys
I would be more interested in seeing this frame specd out for top speed runs it would probably do pretty good
@0:18 Images that make me hungry. BRB, eating those chips.
Also, 'Potatoed' as a verb. Fully approve
he he thank you very much good sir 😎🥔

Not sure about the plastic frame, but I would like to see some more on a race quad with the arms, motors set up like that.

What are your thoughts on cross vs x motor config?

I’ve been out for a few years. I figured by now everyone would have went digital HD view
Brilliant flying Tom
Thanks!

If you get this fixed it would be really good to see race on a more open track. The top speed was amazing.
Agreed! Fingers crossed we can explore quads like these more often! Cheers for the launch stand btw :D

@@BMSWEB well there you go!🤣 maybe I need to consider a throttle curve then, never seen anyone run one!
