Insulated vacuum flasks are a key component of all multi-day outdoor journeys. I'm interested in their performance in the extreme cold, so have come up with a two-part test for three well regarded models. This first half tackles their design and a pre-expedition heat retention comparison.
    Products mentioned:
    Sigg Hot and Cold 1.0L
    Klean Kanteen TKPro 1.0L
    Thermos Ultimate Flask 900ml

As an avid coffee drinker, I approve of this testing, and look forward to the results. I'm also not surprised by the Thermos. I have two, one from my mother's teaching days in the early 80's (it's the rough size of Luxembourg and weighs as much a neutron star) and the other is my travel mug that has gone through the ringer. The prior still works like new after 40+ years of use, and the latter is insanely beaten up after 10 years of use, the bottom is sealed with gaff tape, the lid top snapped off years ago, but it still manages to keep my coffee warmer than any of my new travel mugs.

I had the same Thermos for yrs also and it has never let me down . Keeps my coffee hot for well over 15 hours or more and is also worn and battered . I be sorry to loose it when the day comes

I've been using the Stanley for years now. I also have its baby brother. I have both sizes of the ultralight versions of the Hydro Flasks and I am extremely impressed with them as well. My go-to flask now is the 1 litre lightweight Hydro Flask protected with a neoprene sleeve. Hot drinks all day.

Klean Kanteen pours through the HALF-OPEN stopper!!!
it is what I chose because there is NO plastic except the silicone o-rings

I've noticed that most manufacturers use stainless 400 series. While mine is not insulated, I'm going on 7 years with my klean kanteen. I'm quite hard on my stuff, it is quite battered and dented but it has never leaked a drop nor has there been a single speck of rust. I was quite surprised at the thickness of the steel, seems to be at least 50% thicker than most water bottles. The silicone ring is especially good quality as well, the journal it rides on is carefully polished so it does not get micro tears when you snug it tight. It does not do anything fancy, no bells or whistles, just a damn solid water bottle. The only negative attribute I can think of is that after a few years of abuse, it does not stand up very well anymore. I'm sure that 5 minutes with a hammer would solve this

Supprised the Thermos is colourful, mind I do remember Tartan designs on some of the old glass lined ones.

You are going to get IR radiant heat loss despite the vacuum seal. As part of your antiknock preparation adding an IR reflective layer might yield useful results.
Possibly use some high-end space blanket material like an AeroMedic heat sheet possibly?

I'm not convinced that any super-light coverings will add measureable insulation to the vacuum designs. The foam I add is more to limit dinks and knocks. The foil coating, again, to stop chunks being ripped out the foam, not to reflect thermally.

Imho the test is not complete without testing also the Stanley Classic. It has his typical green insulation to avoid dents successfully even after 15+ years. Since decades we are daily using the Stanleys, at home, on the campsite and in hotels. Even one for keeping the food warm for hours.
Tip for cleaning the inside from tea plaque and bad smells -> Some denture cleaning tablets overnight (e.g. Kukident).

I'm conducting the same test funnily enough but with the 500ml versions and before i watch the second part my money is 1st Thermos 2nd Sigg 3rd KK. I've been using the KK for the last few weeks for the kids Hot Choc, and so much heat is lost trough the lid, its always warm. But as the perfect temp to drink is around 45-50ish for kids it doesn't matter. The Thermos is great, but I'm not going anywhere extreme. off to wetch part 2!

I got a Stanley master series, black coating with a strong carabiner shaped eye on the top. Works great stays warm longer than advertised.
For a friend a bought a clean canteen with high hopes and unfortunately lost its vacume under light abuse.

The key to keeping the heat, has nowadays coned to the design of the lid and the cap. Every brand has several variations with vadtly different cold weather performance.
Im surprised you didnt compare tests already done, and the choose from a top three list of winners.

    • @AlexHibbertOriginals

The variation in cap design is indeed curious - I'd expect a convergence on a known best shape/config.

My thermos flask, the plastic plug is a problem. After multiple uses , the end of it disintegrates. When you wipe it, green plastic powder comes off. Wouldnt recommend it.

I enjoyed this presentation immensely, but I think that an important aspect of vacuum flask operation was sadly overlooked. I'm speaking of course (as if you didn't all know) about the metaphysical aspects of what we are witnessing. I would argue quite vehemently that vacuum flasks are the work of pure evil. They keep hot things hot and cold things cold! What I want to know is how does it know? My wife refuses to have one in the house, she says they are the fruit of pagan idolatry. To be fair she does say a lot of things that are pure shite but in this instance I have to agree with her. That's not to say that I don't posess a vacuum flask, I keep it in the garden shed out of her site. She once put her foot through our television screen for simply catching site of an advert extolling the benefits of vacuum flask ownership. She screamed at the image first of all and denounced the product as "A Devils Dildo" . It was deeply disturbing I can tell you, and made for an awkward silence at the dinner table later that evening. But I like to get my revenge by confusing my vacuum flask. Into it I insert two cups of hot coffee and a choc ice. It's not so cocky then, can't make up it's mind and has some sort of existential crisis by the morning. Anyway, got to go now, toodles.
