They are meticulous when it comes to user experience in Japan. Everything I bought at the Japanese 7-11 was thoughtfully packaged. The onigiri wrapper was designed to keep the seaweed separate from the rice, so it remained crispy. The bottled water was indented, so I could easily grasp it, and bring it to my lips with one hand. @@DovidM exactly, and especially in Texas or Arizona; where heat is so extreme. I used to work in Lowe's Home Improvement Garden center, and lumber. What they dont tell you is you have to pay for water, no discount and no water is really given to you when it is 110 degrees outside. We had fountains that were for everyone, but they were drilled in the wall, and then lord forbid if you forgot your bottle or drink somewhere. So anytime I had to go on lunch, if I didnt have a tumbler, I had to go buy one to be hydrated the rest of the day. We also had no one outside with us to sell sodas or water; if you were the garden cashier. So I now have so many I cant count them. 🤦
My all time favorite vacuum flask for cold water is the Coleman Autoseal FreeFlow. The cap that covers the drinking spout is only meant to be protective. The actual mechanism for opening and closing the bottle is a large button on the back of the cap that seals and unseals the spout. It means that you only have to "open" it once when you get to work or wherever you're going, and after that, your hands never get near where you drink from. Really fantastic in our current circumstances.
Surprised that no one talked about "Contigo". Particularly the Contigo Byron SnapSeal of which I have two. and these have gotten me through some brutal winters.
Yes! Really happy to see a Dopper passing by here! They also got insulated bottles that are really really good! I took my Dopper to japan and pretty much used it all the time to pour bottled water over to keep it cold for longer opposed to the standard plastic bottles from the vending machines.
"it's my daily driver" :D talking about thermos like it's a car. and dam, I can't believe I just watched a video about thermoses. If it were any other youtuber... I don't use them but good stuff
My number one thought with thermoses is if the lid will be easy to clean. I've tended to switch from the fancy complicated lids that insulate well, but are hard to clean, to the flip top lids that are very easy to clean. I always have my tea and coffee with milk or cream, so it can end up causing a scummy film on the lid. Contigo used to be my favorite because it was spill proof and easy to drink from, but now my favorite is actually a David's tea brand thermos for the capacity and easy to clean lid

In our Philippine household, we use the following insulated flasks: - 2 liter Klean Kanteen - 1 liter Zojirushi - 1 liter Tiger - probably 24 oz CB&TL free flask - 16 oz Hydro Flask The free flask and the Hydro Flask are the ones that lose heat/cold the most. The Tiger one has separate hot and cold lids. It also includes a carrying sleeve with shoulder strap.

My favorite one is Qahwa coffee thermos I bought from Amazon Japan. In the U.S., it is so hard to get a coffee tumbler with a sealed lid. Qahwa one caught my eyes because it looked great outside and said it is coated with Teflon so you can taste the actual coffee taste rather that stainless taste.
When I think of Thermos, I think of the big type that construction workers and truck drivers have been using for decades. They seem to be indestructible, keep things hot forever, and have a big capacity for soups or coffee. The contents are poured into the lid, which serves as a bowl or cup. Loved the video!
Me too!! Im obsessed with thermoses!! But your collection is better than mine of course!! I thought there was sommething wrong with me. Thank god I found you!!!
As much technology that goes into making a thermos they still have left one big major factor out that would be a game-changer, and that is,... the mouth needs to be wide enough that you can stick your hand down with a sponge and clean out your entire thermos. They can make the lid fit the thermos just as easy and make it become narrower at the top of the lid but as far as a thermos I still have not found one that will hold 32 oz and has a wide mouth
There's got to be some... I'll be going through everything I have in the livestream, so you can always check that out in a bit ruclips.net/video/-MyY3zXcbKQ/видео.html
Most people would probably find it strange to be so particular about something like a thermos but I feel you. For something that you always have nearby and use so often, it's natural to seek out one that appeals to your aesthetics and routine. Since the technology is practically perfected since the introduction of sealing gaskets- basically all insulated flasks made with heat retaining material (pretty much only steel or glass) and a leak-proof design to will perform relatively the same- I look for style and unique function in a thermos. The one I favour currently is stainless, has a wide mouth built in mesh strainer(so that anything like tea leaves, ice, or fruit you might want to toss in won't come out when you drink), comes with both a removable tea basket attachment and a shaking attachment for matcha(that can be repurposed for protein or other powders), and most uniquely a pressure release button which I find is very important for hot liquids since this one is unscrewed to drink from. The lid also has a built in handle to carry or hang the bottle and all the lid parts come off completely so that every nook and cranny can be thoroughly cleaned, although these days I'm only putting ice water in and never drink from the mouth so I actually rarely need to scrub it at all unless I want to. In colder weather I use it to store portable hot water to brew tea with at my desk.
@@spiritingaway I have the black textured version of this www.davidstea.com/ca_en/teaware/silver-stainless-steel-matcha-maker/902695DT01VAR0065575.html It's a Canadian brand so I'm not sure if they ship elsewhere. They also sell it on Canadian Amazon.
10:03 - The two you need: One wide mouth tumbler for daily desk use, easy to clean. One Zojirushi flip top bottle, which is like the Ferrari of thermoses but harder to clean.
I thought I was the lone weirdo when it came to stainless vacuum flasks from way before they were so ubiquitous. Thermos is my preferred brand as well. But that may be because I was actually unaware that Zojirushi even made them! It all started back with Thermos's can cooler and to-go coffee cup insulator. They didn't sell well in the states so they were discontinued, which led me to buy any that I ran across. Now, they're all over the place. At least the can cooler anyway, but the most popular style is more the bigger, thicker Yeti style and not the much slimmer (and just as effective) Thermos style. Nowadays, I switch mainly between my 40oz tumbler, a 16oz "talls" can style, for general purpose drinking, and a slim pint glass style for drinking beers at home.

Yeah, I had a few experiences with glass sloshing around after you've broken it.
my mom still believed that the one with glasses inside is better than the stainless steel one!
And every time you dropped your lunchbox on the way to school, your milk would be ruined with broken glass.
When i was in the military we had glass bottles in our thermoses. Not the most practical thing to have in the forest in deep snow during simulated combat...
I bought one recently that has a glass lining - great for cleaning!
I loved my old little thermos, back in the days I brought it to school every day... Now you made me want to buy a thermos again, a good one! Thank you so much for this comparison! It was interesting and informative 😊
You have such a cute cat, the star of the show
This is so unexpected but as an Industrial Designer I appreciate people that are in to ergonomics and aesthetics with every day items.
I was seriously impressed.
@@MC-ko2mx though I agree, I'm kinda disappointed with the amount of packaging they use. Extreme amounts of single use plastic.
@@2WheelsGood.01 That is the downside.
They are more rigorous with their recycling, but I doubt that all the plastic used is biodegradable.
@@MC-ko2mx yeah bio plastic is still in it's infancy unfortunately. It's pricey and it's not good with heat. I've seen PLA cups here and there but they're only for cold water. Heat will instantly melt them.
@@2WheelsGood.01 Interesting.
I wonder if we will look back in 20 years, and wonder why we ever used non-biodegradable plastic.
We tend to forget the struggles in the initial stages, once something has become the norm.
I just bought a thermos! After years of not drinking tea at school because my parents always had dirty low quality thermoses, I bought my own and i have no idea why I didn't do it sooner
I live in the UK and recently bought a Zojirushi, because they have the best ergonomics and can fit into cup holders better. The heat/cold retention is excellent too.
Your "Hey Google set a timer for 3 minutes" actually set a timer on my Google home.
I really don't have time to be on RUclips right now, yet I can't stop watching this special on a topic I shouldn't have been interested in. This was so fun to watch--nice job!
My mom has had a Nissan thermos for over 20 years and she often brings up how good it is. It holds heat so well and has had like weekly usage over these 20 years and it still works so well.
20 years?! That's amazing!!!
I have a smaller Zojirushi and that spring-loaded locking cap opening mechanism is strangely addictive to open and close. It's just so satisfying!
people : what is the meaning of life
this guy : shiny things and drinks
My family enjoy your channel and have been watching for years. We also bought a Zojirushi recently which was sparked by this video. It is amazing!
Trust me, anyone's addicted to any Japanese stuff.
me: Re-ments
Love your kitty helping you unpack. WE NEED MORE KITTY FAN SERVICE! All seriousness this was a wonderful video and i thank you for it just as the rest of your videos
you should definitely compare these with hydroflasks
omg syn
Thank you for doing all the tests! I love that attention to detail. I wouldn't think of doing a one handed test but it makes a lot of sense.
I don't think i've seen a person with that many thermoses 😂
Hah same but remember they're a family of 4.
@@2WheelsGood.01 I think this is just Greg's personal collection lol
You can easily accumulate 20 to 30 over a few years. I’ve mostly gotten them at training classes and industry events. Your registration fee includes a thermos as a “gift”. I regift the flasks to co-workers since I would never get around to using them myself (I’ve had my Yeti for several years now).
Have you met me?
I love my contigo.
I love my contigo. If I keep the lid closed after every sip my coffee will stay at a drinkable temp for a good 4 hours.
adding to my buy list : thermos with cleaning tool and sharpening stones
OMG!! I have found my people!! Im so happy I'm not alone in this obsession 😭😂
Yes! Really happy to see a Dopper passing by here! They also got insulated bottles that are really really good! I took my Dopper to japan and pretty much used it all the time to pour bottled water over to keep it cold for longer opposed to the standard plastic bottles from the vending machines.
Ahhh yes, a thermos connoisseur.
You truly are one of a kind Greg! Thanks for sharing your research
For me the highlight of this video is that thermos cleaner thingy...
How does that tool even work? What technology is it using?
I neeeed it.
SAME. Why didn't he link it with everything else? :(
Stephanie Greshuk It’s in the description :)
Wow! Thanks taking the time to test and show us all the details of the bottles. & the cleaner!
"it's my daily driver" :D talking about thermos like it's a car. and dam, I can't believe I just watched a video about thermoses. If it were any other youtuber... I don't use them but good stuff
Too much MKBHD
My number one thought with thermoses is if the lid will be easy to clean. I've tended to switch from the fancy complicated lids that insulate well, but are hard to clean, to the flip top lids that are very easy to clean.
I always have my tea and coffee with milk or cream, so it can end up causing a scummy film on the lid. Contigo used to be my favorite because it was spill proof and easy to drink from, but now my favorite is actually a David's tea brand thermos for the capacity and easy to clean lid
You just told MY google to set a timer for 3 minutes...
Always bonus points for cat assisted unboxing.
You'd be a perfect candidate for House Hunters if you ever need to move.

JDM thermoses, A word i never thought I'd hear.
I loved it! I never thought I'd love to watch a 20 minutes video about thermoses but you are way too good with storytelling hahaha. Shin has grown so much! And btw, I'm starting to edit videos and now I can't help noticing how much effort you put on those, they are so well produced! Congratulations for the amazing job :)
That's a lot of cups!
I loved watching this better then the 1 hour video. It was fun watching you do the tests with Shin.
Me, using a glass milk bottle from Daiso for my coffee: Ah. So thats why everyone thinks I'm drinking soy sauce.
🤣
🤣🤣
Okay, I thought my mother was obsessed with them, but this takes it to another level
I only watched it because it was by you, but I've come away a changed man :-) Must buy thermos! BTW, congratulations on gathering the video clips from around the world. I remember you saying that's what you wanted to do with the channel originally and I thought it worked brilliantly! Also Shin was amazing. All around great video :-)
Commenting before I start watching just to say Zojirushi.
I’ve been using Tiger thermoses for over five years and I love them. The only issue is the rubber seal on the lid will get moldy if you don’t keep the drinking spout clean.
In Malaysia, THERMOS has become a generic name, just like TUPPERWARE 😆
I wish I lived in Malaysia.
Ali - Where are you from brother?
@@jeffreyzain I live in overrated United States. We have no healthcare here, no public transportation, unhealthy restaurants everywhere. Malaysia is one of my top destinations to live.
Ali - Hahaha you got me there. I thought you wanted to live in Malaysia for its generic Thermoses and Tupperwares LOL!
@@jeffreyzain haha nope, much more than that.
I'm so glad I'm not the only person with a thermos obsessession. I spent hours in Japanese shops looking for the perfect one: size, nice design and shape.Still looking, although I like the daily one (the one that was hard to clean) the most.
I haven’t watched the video yet, but I’m stressed and depressed so you can’t imagine how glad I am to have a twenty minute long video about thermoses to watch. I love your channel it’s so relaxing :)
IKR 😅.
Including Greg sounds delicate, soft, soothing and calming. 😊
I hope you get better soon. 💐
I felt your comment so deeply
In our Philippine household, we use the following insulated flasks:
- 2 liter Klean Kanteen
- 1 liter Zojirushi
- 1 liter Tiger
- probably 24 oz CB&TL free flask
- 16 oz Hydro Flask
The free flask and the Hydro Flask are the ones that lose heat/cold the most. The Tiger one has separate hot and cold lids. It also includes a carrying sleeve with shoulder strap.
Since I'm broke, I don't have a fancy thermos. I recycle Soft Drink bottles as my water bottle.
My brother received a Japanese tumbler from his host family when he stayed in Japan for 11 days. I love opening the tumbler because the button feels nice to push.
Look at how big Shin got omg!!! He made me realize I've been following you for a long time lol
Here in the Philippines we call airpots, Thermos. Goes as far back when they still have glass insides.
Yes it is, The Airpots were popular in the 80s Philippine households. And it was also in kids' lunchboxes, I used to have 2 lunchboxes with Thermos Bottles in it.
to be honest, everything is better in Japan, compared to the US.
True. Like the story of 7eleven ☺️
Couldn’t agree more
Not hot dogs. :-) Also access to cheese is highly curtailed here. And sometimes if it is a really cold winter the cows don't produce enough milk, which is fine because 2/3 of the population is lactose intolerant. But there is a shortage of butter. If you live in the countryside like me there are years where you can go 2-3 months without seeing butter on the store shelves. Ha ha! I'm only complaining about food...
👍
At 00:21 My husband owns the same exact Zojirushi thermos. He owned a lot since he works at a shipyard and he says that it’s the best because it’s the easiest to clean and keeps the water cool until he comes home. I have 2 myself. They’re a must especially during the summer. Now everytime we go out we bring a thermos of cold water. Saves us lots of money😁
So, this is what you're doing with your patrons' money? 😂 Kidding! cool video!
My husband has a zojirushi, it's great. He once forgot it full of hot coffee and the next day it was still drinkably hot!
Well done Greg (and Shin) so now i know i will get a Zōjirushi 魔法瓶 on my next trip 2 JPN.... once the whole situation gets sorted out 🤓
Was there some kind of RUclips Daruma behind you? 🤔
RUclips Drama? Nope, not that I know of, haha. Oh wait, Daruma... yes, it is one. You're supposed to write the number of subscribers you would like in the year. At the time, Aiko wrote 300,000. It worked!

Suntori time!
This video came in perfect timing! My husband and I just borrowed a Korean thermos from our boss. My husband couldn't drink the coffee because it was SOOO hot. We thought, "Oh my goodness, we need a thermos! Which one is the best?" Came home and this video popped up! Thank you!!
In many products, Japanese designs are more thoughtful and considerate.
The linguistic phenomenon seen in Thermos is called a "Generic trademark". I knew there had to be a word for it 😎
We say 'Hoover' in England for vacuum cleaner.
But also by the way 'Anthimeria' is the word when it's used as a verb. Hoover the living room. Google something etc
When I think of Thermos, I think of the big type that construction workers and truck drivers have been using for decades. They seem to be indestructible, keep things hot forever, and have a big capacity for soups or coffee. The contents are poured into the lid, which serves as a bowl or cup. Loved the video!
I prefer DPRK made products, now those products are quality
Me too!! Im obsessed with thermoses!! But your collection is better than mine of course!! I thought there was sommething wrong with me. Thank god I found you!!!
Okay your son is going to be such a heart breaker.
In colder weather I use it to store portable hot water to brew tea with at my desk.
do you have a link of your thermos?
@@spiritingaway I have the black textured version of this www.davidstea.com/ca_en/teaware/silver-stainless-steel-matcha-maker/902695DT01VAR0065575.html It's a Canadian brand so I'm not sure if they ship elsewhere. They also sell it on Canadian Amazon.
10:03 - The two you need: One wide mouth tumbler for daily desk use, easy to clean. One Zojirushi flip top bottle, which is like the Ferrari of thermoses but harder to clean.
So true they’re really hard to clean but keep you safe and warm with hot water throughout winter
I've never been interested in thermoses but I really enjoyed this video. Thanks!
10:18 I'm gonna need a whole video about that thing.
