I'd heard about the Rolex Marconi but you're the first RUclips channel to do a story on it as far as I know. I think they're very nice; but then again, I really love the Cellini. I suspected that Rolex was bidding on the Newman watch. From a corporate and branding standpoint it makes very good sense -- I'm sure they've figured out some way to write off the purchase and the marketing hype surrounding the sale is probably worth more than the fifty million dollars that Rolex purportedly spends on marketing annually. Although it's certainly not illegal, it is shady that Rolex is not open about this practice (I'm sure they've done it a few other times). Basically, they're fabricating a mystique that's not based on intrinsic value or even perceived value -- it's basic, cynical, opportunistic manipulation. Furthermore, I don't doubt that rival auction bids were actually agents of Rolex just to manufacture the impression of intense competition and desire. Pray do tell, where did you get your info regarding the Newman Daytona auction?
Hey, Neil! You and I are in rare company for those who like the Cellini. Newman's Daytona would have been disastrous, for Rolex, if it failed to reach a final bid anywhere close to the anticipated $10mil but that they helped create. This practice is not common knowledge and the majority of those who attend these auctions or read about them don't have a clue. You can see it in their faces from the excitement and I'm sure if they really knew...they would be very disappointed. The info comes from some well-placed sources, in addition the watch is in Rolex's museum which explains a lot. 😱💰
Thanks for the clarification. The watch is already in their museum! How brazen; especially since they don't publicly disclose that they bought the thing. Maybe insiders know how things go down at these auctions (I'm assuming collusion between vendor and buyer) but boneheads like me are genuinely fooled by this tactic. Thanks for popping my bubble. I guess that, if it's in a museum, that the purchase is a charitable tax write-off? Double slimy.
Museum=some sort of write-off. 😱👌 Having this knowledge is a bit double-edged because it used to be nice to wonder who the individual person is, what he does for a living, new money or old?... etc but now that feeling is filled with cynicism. But it's also reality.
Very interesting video.......did not know about that model. Love those old vintage dials. It's really not all that unusual for manufacturers of luxury items to buy their old products off the market for whatever reason, usually brand management. A few years ago Mercedes bought the collection of all the cars they had made for Adolph Hitler from a private collector. They were shipped off to a warehouse in Germany never to be seen again Im sure----Mercedes (Daimler) didn't want them publicly displayed or to go to auction. The only way I know this is that I know one of the truck drivers who picked them up at a warehouse in Nevada and transported them to a ship bound for Bremerhaven on the East Coast. The truck driver told me that based on the insurance they were told to put on the cars, that Daimler had paid over $100 million for those cars.
Hey, celestialfix! Great story about Mercedes, I wasn't aware of that. Yes, I'm sure MB didn't want any association and attention with Hitler! I guess that purchase was not common knowledge like Rolex buying Newman's Rolex isn't exactly public knowledge. Newman's was so hyped with expectations of over $10 mil...Rolex simply could not let that fail or fall below that target amount. Bad business. Thanks for sharing the MB story. ✌️ 🚙 😁
What??? Wow had no idea Rolex was the bidder for Paul Newman’s $17 mil Daytona. Great great info. Breaking news indeed for us outside of the industry. Thanks whatsonthewrist. 👍👍👍👍
I asked Clyve Watch-Wrangler once how life was like when Marconi revolutionized the radio, and he alluded to the Rolex Marconi as his grail back in those days. He saved a telegram that he once sent Hans Wilsdorf requesting a Rolex Marconi and it is showcased today in the Smithsonian
Thanks for the education. Never heard of this model. I'm amazed with your knowledge on watches. Do you have a staff or a gang of people doing the research for you?
Very interesting insight. Keep up the good work Richard. Waiting for a review of an Omega Seamaster GMT, of course if it is possible. I am an Omega fan so I am curious to get your opinion!
I just found out about these vintage rolexes and I have found a hand full that have what I look for ina watch, and for some reason iv been falling for vintage pieces and vintage styled pieces.
Very good informative video watch enthusiast channels don't talk about this watch I think most don't even have a clue this watch is a thing very good story telling
You dig out the most interesting background stories bro. Didn’t know about that. Damn, now the hype starts 😱😱 and it’s your fault 😡😡 😂😂😂😂🙏🏻 Great one as usual bro, really enjoyed watching it. Cheers from Germany Rich 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Good research on the forgotten Rolex that's a good buy. But, as an advertising professional, I have to say I just don't get the tie in here. A vintage mechanical watch line named after a wireless telegraph? I guess it was the internet of its day, which would make it big stuff and all. But what did that have to do with a watch? Now the ads Rolex did around explorers and sports heros I get. That was genius and groundbreaking at the time. Guess even Rolex can't be right all the time!
Hi, Dan. I think Hans wanted his brand to be associated with Marconi since Marconi's name was popular in a cutting edge way as he won the Nobel prize. In 1909, radio was groundbreaking. A bit of an odd partnership, I agree, and seemingly one that didn't end well. Thanks! 😱🤛
The first radios sold to the public were referred to in some markets as "Marconis". He was a household world at the turn of the century and I suppose it made sense to cash in on that popularity. I know the comments have expressed surprise about Rolex bidding on Paul Newman's watch and have overshadowed your intended topic, but it is an interesting fact and also makes a little more sense about the exorbitant price that it went for. They simply weren't going to be be outbid. That also explains how David Scott's prototype Bulova watch -- with actual frickin' moon dust on it! -- sold for one tenth of what a movie star's watch went for.
Hi, Lee. Good to see ya, stranger. For sure $17 mil is a whole lot different for Rolex than Bulova to spend, it's really an investment for Rolex to keep their watches in demand thru auctions.✌️😜
Back at it again that Rich man... I mean that man Rich!!! 💰 People had to decide, Marconi or Macaroni? 🍝 We know who won! LOL Nice bit about Rolex controlling prices by bidding and buying their own. That is business and business done well. It does present them as a show pony instead of the thoroughbred that they once were. I have seen numerous times where people point to that instance of the Newman going for more than say the one that went to space. I didn't understand it but now do. Emperor's new clothes. However, I do believe they do need this strategy to stay as prestigious as they are and hold their value. Question...As Tudor becomes more relevant, and Rolex prices rise faster than inflation, is this strategic and are they working hand in hand? As I understand they are separate companies but I assume that could be by design? 🕵🏼
Hey, The Colony. Rolex and Tudor are in separate buildings/office space. However, they share the same QC team in the same room at that point. Tudor is dominating the game right now, but I'm not convinced that they will replace Rolex as the go-to entry-level luxury brand permanently. I still don't like their BB41 enough.🤛😁
Hi Rich, Another great video again. If Rolex can afford 17mil then they can afford to pay the Marconi family for the rights to use that name. But what would they call the new watch, Marconi2 ? Thanks for sharing.
whatsonthewrist My guess is that they are embarrassed by the Marconi episode because the previous leadership didn't ask for the rights in the first place.
Hi Rich, To me those Marconi watches look great! But like with many things, it provokes an emotion, either you love it or hate it. Speaking of such thing is my new car. My beloved Citroën didn't come out well of the heat wave we had. So I bought another quircky car, a Peugeot 1007. Bit of a European fashion thingy, with sliding doors!
Hey, Mike! I remember your Citroën. I haven't thought about Peugeot either until now. Mini van doors with their sliding ability, good for tight parking spots. 🚙 ☕️
Man my Citroën V6 was a cruiser and I will miss her (a French car is a she). Had a Peugeot before, a 406, nice sedan and drove it to southern France and back (obviously). Columbo had a Peugeot as well LOL.
My parents had two Renault's, unfortunatly (like most marks) they had a reliability problem with Laguna, Vel Satis, Avantime and Espace. Drove a Vel Satis as a loaner once, very nice! Renault here in The Netherlands is a big brand, you see Renaults on every corner.
Definitely hold on to it. As with anything Rolex the prices are going up. I have one Rolex and various Tudors in my collection now but in the process of purchasing several Marconi's. Just recently purchased the first, gorgeous dial, great condition and of course the magnificent sweeping second had. Most are averaging about 1k however I anticipate cost going much higher.
LOL Rolex secretly bought the $17 million Paul Newman Daytona in the Phillips auction. Nice research Rich the Rolex Marconi is an affordable Rolex for vintage watch collectors.
Hey, James. Good to see ya. You also changed your user image without the pic. I'm not totally sold on Bitcoin, although it has made a lot of people a lot of money.💰 ☕️😱

Interesting perspective. I had no idea this Rolex existed. Thank you.
Hi, Dr. Poppy! I find them more unique looking and a nice variety of designs for Rolex. 👌😁
Great video Rich! Never heard about the Marconi before.
For a second I read it as Rolex Macaroni.... Probably would make a tasty dish though 😁
Hey, WCS! I totally get that! How about the idea of pasta noodles in the shape of watches?! 🍝 😜
Great watch history, keep it coming!
Thanks, TRUE LIBERTY! 🗽 😁
Great video. I was looking at Markoni for a while and you confirm my thoughts
Hi, Steve. I think they are really cool. I hope you get one. Please let me know once you do. 👊
Hello Rich, this was an informative video. I Enjoyed watching it. ⌚️⏱
Thanks, Bob! 🤛☕️

Thanks Rich,,never knew about this model,,these heirlooms may hold their place later in the rolex archives,,,
Hi, Thomas! I also like a lot of their designs. 👌😜 🔐
yes absolutely,,they have some outstanding models,,thanks for posting this Rich,,really well done,,,
What??? Wow had no idea Rolex was the bidder for Paul Newman’s $17 mil Daytona. Great great info. Breaking news indeed for us outside of the industry. Thanks whatsonthewrist. 👍👍👍👍
Hi, Tom! Thanks and I understand the shock! 🌩 😱
It’s a shady practice by Rolex if u ask me.
Well, to be fair it's not only said name that practices this. 🤛
Very very interesting. Never heard about it before. Fascinating story. 👍
Thanks, Shane!🤛
Great content as always! Now thanks to Richie boy, the prices will go up! :)
Hey, Eternal Flame! Haha, now maybe Rolex will name a model after me. 👌😜
Hi, Tanzeel! Ahh, yes the telegram...our original form of texting. I hope Clyde doesn't confuse Instagram and the telegram. 📻 😜
Thanks for the education. Never heard of this model.
I'm amazed with your knowledge on watches. Do you have a staff or a gang of people doing the research for you?
Hey, Watch Dog! Thank you from someone with a very impressive Rolex collection. 👌😜
Sorry brother, I’m so busy with work I haven’t been able to get on RUclips. I have to catch up on your last 3 vids. Great info as always 👍
Hey, Sam! Good to see ya, man. These watches should be right up your alley. See ya soon. 👨⚕️ 😜
Very interesting insight. Keep up the good work Richard. Waiting for a review of an Omega Seamaster GMT, of course if it is possible. I am an Omega fan so I am curious to get your opinion!
Hi, __gaijin_! Thanks! Let's see what we can do.🤛😁
I've been the black sheep of the family for some time, it's underrated. Any progress on the podcast idea?
Hi, Yer Phuckhead Phriend! Thanks for following-up on the podcast, I am still undecided largely due to scheduling. ☕️🤛
Is Rolex scrubbing the Marconi? LOL! Nice one! I quite forgot about that one. Thank you Richard!
Hey, Richard! Thanks! 😱☕️
I just found out about these vintage rolexes and I have found a hand full that have what I look for ina watch, and for some reason iv been falling for vintage pieces and vintage styled pieces.
Hi, Xyz Xyz. Glad to hear about your current obsession towards vintage. Current models with vintage influences can also be great.
Very good informative video watch enthusiast channels don't talk about this watch I think most don't even have a clue this watch is a thing very good story telling
Thanks, 4EvaLost. I appreciate you.
Did somebody say vintage Rolex? You have my attention.
Hey, David. Good to see ya, man. You've been gone for a minute. I also like the vintage looks of the Marconi's a lot. 👌😜
You dig out the most interesting background stories bro. Didn’t know about that. Damn, now the hype starts 😱😱 and it’s your fault 😡😡

Hi Rich,
Another great video again. If Rolex can afford 17mil then they can afford to pay the Marconi family for the rights to use that name. But what would they call the new watch, Marconi2 ?
Thanks for sharing.
Hey, Sunny! Rolex as a company can certainly afford anything. Marconi 2 has a nice ring a la Explorer 2, DJ 2. 💰👌😜
whatsonthewrist My guess is that they are embarrassed by the Marconi episode because the previous leadership didn't ask for the rights in the first place.
Could be, Sunny! 🤛
I bought a watch which says Marconi Special
Can I consider it a Rolex even though it doesn't have that word on the watch
There are some good looking ones on ebay tho and priced well just the thing is servicing that will cost you an arm and leg
Hey, pavy415. Maybe not anymore than any other Rolex done at a Rolex servicing center.
I have a Rolex Marconi pocket watch 1930’s
I’ve seen one for sale for $7,000 in Osaka.
Congrats on yours, The_ Joker. You’ve got something special. 👌
*_...And I thought the Cellini was the dog of the range ;)_*
Hey, I'm Rich Bitch! Really? I kinda like the new Cellini but I really like the vintage look of the Marconi. ✌️☕️
Hi Rich,
To me those Marconi watches look great!
But like with many things, it provokes an emotion, either you love it or hate it.

Renault here in The Netherlands is a big brand, you see Renaults on every corner.
I wasn't aware Renault was still around, good to know. 👌
Should I hold onto mine? I have a very good condition one.
I would. It may not necessarily increase in value but it’d be cool to just own one. Congrats.
Definitely hold on to it. As with anything Rolex the prices are going up. I have one Rolex and various Tudors in my collection now but in the process of purchasing several Marconi's. Thank you for making a video on this watch your truly the best
Hey, German R! Thank you for the suggestion, hopefully you enjoyed the show?! 🤝 😁
Looks like Cellini took it's spot!
Hey, iDid! A couple of people have also expressed this. I can see it. ☕️🤛
They got the drop on me, lol!
I did read a few yrs. back, that Rolex was getting rid of the manual wind Cellini...going auto!
"They got the drop on me." Very LOL LOL LOL!!!
Marconi and cheese makes an excellent meal
Hey, Maynard! A little surprised this is the first of this joke.🤣😱
LOL Rolex secretly bought the $17 million Paul Newman Daytona in the Phillips auction. Nice research Rich the Rolex Marconi is an affordable Rolex for vintage watch collectors.
Hi, mena seven! Thank you! I think it stunned more people than I thought, as it is not common knowledge. So, I'm glad I revealed it.✌️😜
Shhhh!!
Hi, Haru! Ok, shhh! 🤫
Googley Amo Marconi? Ahahahahaha
Hi, dachanist! Ok thanks I suppose. 👌😜
@@whatsonthewrist it's like Rudy Giuliani or Julian Calendar.

Hi, Handy. 👌
Shill bidding? Say it ain't so.
Hey, Matt! Funny guy Matt is. 😜🤛
In the past 7 years: Bitcoin > Rolex > US$ > Gold
Bitcoin had quite the auspicious start. 💰
whatsonthewrist hey rich, thanks for your content. Enjoyed them a lot. I hope you own some bitcoin 👍
You can't enjoy wearing a Bitcoin ...
Hey, James. Good to see ya. You also changed your user image without the pic. I'm not totally sold on Bitcoin, although it has made a lot of people a lot of money.💰 ☕️😱
whatsonthewrist Yupp, don't know what happened to the pic, will try to restore it. Still a big fan, watch all your stuff. Cảm ơn
