Because of the harsh realities of how youtube works. Video success is dependent on click through rate and watch time and while some viewers are fans who are willing to give anything a chance, many other people are just casual viewers who need to be interested in the topic to click a video or watch past the first few minutes. This video also has a bit of a problem with its hook being unclear/weak. There is good payoff for those who watch all the way through but there isn't a strong incentive to do that.
@@KnowsBestNever it's a very good video so far, I'm about 10 minutes in. I love games, play them everyday probably to my detriment but I'm also interested in beauty standard too. I watched streamers and it actually came up among them at one point, when advertising Maverick - the new Tom cruise movie. They mentioned how he looked great in comparison to this other guy. It was interesting to me that they might not have thought he had work done when I feel he probably has. People don't always think men would do work to their bodies to look good. Basically what I'm trying to say, is that everyone would find this interesting to some degree and I'm pretty sure it might shock you to see it do well on your main channel. However I understand your concern, I've seen many great channels falter because of adding new topics to the mix so it's a very real fear. Either way, I'm enjoying it and thank you for making the video.
@@KnowsBestNever I guess that's fair. Your audience does largely consist of gamers, but I like to learn for its own sake, and not being very tech savy myself, I didn't know how easy it was to manipulate images. I learned a lot.
Same here. I don't even watch 5 minutes from a RUclipsr I don't like, if I can watch Never for hours is not only because I like the topics but because he is an excellent narrator and has really valuable and critical opinions. Also, I might be more disconnected with a video of a game I haven't played than with a critic about society, that's something I'll always be interested in hearing from a good and analytical narrator. Keep on Never
As a young singer-songwriter, I was obsessed with Brandon Flowers, singer of the Killers, and capturing the vocal sound on that band’s first record, and I would always come up just short enough to discourage myself. Years later, I found an article about how the album was only intended as a demo and the vocals had been pitch corrected. That idea of idolizing false “perfection” is very true.
This was one of the best videos you've ever produced. I don't think you realize how good of a writer, narrator and editor you are. I seriously think you could make anything interesting.
Honestly I wouldn’t mind having videos like this on the main channel. I loved when Jacob Geller started to do non video game essays and I can totally see that working for you as well. It’s a shame that I almost missed this video if I hadn’t watched your Dark Souls video to the very end
".. filters become previews for not just how the person wants to look, but also for how they could look with *just the right surgery*". Bravo! What an insight.
Hey. You do sound crestfallen in your posts sometimes, so I just wanted to say that you’re my favourite youtuber and I’m really looking forward to your new videos regardless of topic. You are also one of the two people I supported on Patreon (can’t do this any longer, unfortunately, because politics and stuff). I’m pretty sure there are lots of us who would gladly listen to you ramble about anything, so please make videos on any topic you feel passionate about
This was incredible. As a man who was incredibly overweight for most of my childhood (I lost 100lbs before high school) I have always suffered from dysmorphic tendencies. It's crazy how even after loosing the weight, you are never truly free of that insecurity. And still, the little parts of my body that remind me of those times being fat and (ostensibly) unwanted trigger such a deep sense of frustration and angst. It can be impossible to feel even "normal" when you are in a constant competition with other people. But as you said in the last few minutes, no one looks at "you" the way you look at yourself. Ultimately it is up to us to change our frame of reference to one of fairness--and only comparing our actions to others, rather than our attractiveness (which has a margin of subjectiveness). Anyway I am a constant fan of yours. Thank you for your hard work.
Hear, hear I’ve been fat my entire life before losing a lot of weight through fasting & low-carb/high-fat nutrition recently, and I’m only just starting to realize how confusing it’s going to be to stare into a mirror and not really know what the hell I’m “supposed” to look like for the rest of my life Not to mention a whole bunch of unresolvable anger toward the way I was raised, because I will never know how life might had been if I was able to grow up athletic, save my internal organs & skin from a lot of avoidable damage and so on
Almost halfway through, I really like hearing you talk about other topics. I've recently started exploring the world of plastic surgery and image manipulation due to feeling not pretty or feeling like I'm not "taking care" of myself even though I eat mostly healthy, drink a lot of water, put on sunscreen and lotions and am physically active. As a girl, I can't tell you enough how much my confidence increased after coming across Lorry Hill's channel. Education about this is really, really important, especially for young people.
As someone who has never heard of you before today (got here through your dark souls video), I hope you're proud of this video despite how many views it gets because it highlights how exceptional you are as a content creator. Even if it doesn't join RUclips's 1 billion club, this is the kind of video that will have an impact on those who DO watch it. I really hope to see more from this channel in the future.
Great video! I've heard this topic covered by other female RUclipsrs and it was interesting to hear a male perspective on this issue. There's definitely not the same amount of attention being drawn to steroid use as tweaking so kudos to you for discussing it!
Macabre Storytelling also did a video on it if you're interested in another male perspective on the subject. Though that one was more focused on celebrity "superhero"/action movie transformations
If you want to do more of this kind of videos, please do so. I will always watch. You're just a great storyteller, man. Keep it up. Thanks for reading my comment.
I'm here from the dark souls video, and I've got to say that this video is great. I went through my own body dysmorphia back when I was going through puberty, but my conclusion to that ordeal was not wanting alteration, but instead I adopted a perception of radical acceptance. I love how my body is, and I will love how my body will become. The judgement of my looks which is most valuable, is my own judgement. Any external benefits I may gain from altering my appearance is secondary to the loss of the value I place in how I look naturally... Though, I admittedly may be considered by others to take it too far, as even before everybody was sent home to work 2 years ago, I had already went years without shaving or getting my hair cut. The purely unaltered is my gold standard for beauty, and I live it to the extreme. I don't expect this standard from anybody else, and it would be wrong to say that I don't understand not liking one's own appearance and wishing to look different. And anyways, I tend to respond to these kinds of internal struggles with a questioning and reframing of my perspective and values instead of trying to conform to the preset values, of which I can not be sure are purely originating from within (looking at you, every person in movies and shows with basically no body hair who fueled the start of my body dysmorphia as a young pubescent child). With all that said, I appreciate your acknowledgement of both the validity of people's personal choices/preferences and the bad of those trying to manipulate those things for their own benefit. Keep up the great work.
I love your game reviews but I also really enjoyed this. I know it's not your main type of content, but I'd be excited to see more deep dives into whatever topic catches your interest.
I'm so glad I subscribed to this channel after the Q&A, honestly this is just as good as your gaming content. You articulate you thoughts very well, make good points, do your research, make it entertaining and have top notch editing. You could put this on your main channel but I understand not wanting to go in too many directions, but at least advertise your secondary channel on your next review so it can grow faster. Hope this won't be a one time thing, if you draw a blank and find it hard to talk about video game for a while then you shouldn't force yourself and talk about what interest you at the moment instead.
Holy heck, found this by accident as I was clicking away from Neverknows to avoid a game spoiler. This was/is epic and extremely well done, I can't be alone in thinking more of this would be a good thing 👏👏👏
I have to say, as a totally blind person, I too am affected by these things. I am absolutely insecure about my appearance, though I really wish I wasn't. That said, I think I am less affected when it comes to the appearances of others, though I do feel for my sighted friends and family who endure the pummelling of societal standards every single day. It is absolutely an interesting thing to discuss and think about. I really wish the world wasn't this way. I wish this video was wrong. It's not. There's so much more I could say, but I'll leave it there.
That is utterly fascinating, but I'm also sorry. Can I ask what that experience is like without vision? My own body issues are usually focused around pictures or mirrors.
Damn NeverKnowsBest you absolutely crushed this topic. Been feeling awful about my body as a 32 year old dad since COVID and well... as messed up as the reality of everything you presented here is about male body standards... I am weirdly feeling a bit more positive about myself after watching this. Not sure if that's intentional, but thank you!
I enjoy your content so much. You make exactly the type of analysis that I love, with visuals and music and voice. I found your main channel thanks to your Genshin video (which is so fantastic I sometimes rewatch bits of it after having watched the full thing twice and having shared it with friends), but I'm not that interested in video games, so finding this second channel was a pleasant surprise. The way you tell and explain stuff is magnetic because it feels so natural. You've never given me a sense of arrogance or said anything matter-of-factly, which is what tends to drive me away. You're like a friend sharing thoughts with others.
Whenever I have a bad body day, I tell my husband... who has the oddest habit: he will kiss the bit I hate. It makes me laugh, making me feel better. We spend so much time inside our own heads, thinking everyone thinks/knows what we know.... but they don't. Everyone else is too wrapped up in their own heads to care about you, how you look... I personally find this freeing and care very little what people say about me. Because if they have something to say, that just means I disrupted the inner monologue of self-whatever and brought them out of their heads and into the world. That's a win.
Only after actually watching the video I realised that this is not the main channel =) I do understand the reasoning, but it's a shame less people will see this. Great video, very interesting and thought provoking arguments. Thank you so much for your work!
Great video! While I understand why you put this on a separate channel, I hope you will continue to make content like this in the future. I love video games but I signed up for your Patreon for your thoughts and analysis. Subscribing to this channel just in case we get more gems like this in the future
I will show this video to my children when they are growing up and suffer from severe body dismorphia like I did. I'm glad i barely missed the social media era by just a few years or I'd have been even more self-conscious during puberty. Thank you for speaking so frankly and truthfully. Great video!
Great documentary vid, really glad I found this 2nd channel! I definitely relate to insecurity regarding acne when I was a teenager. That was by far my biggest insecurity during those years, and I went through a fuck ton of acne medicines before my parents and dermatologist let me take accutane, which got rid of my severe acne permanently. This resulted in less bullying, and gave me more self confidence. What absolutely just annoyed the shit out of me was how some people would say "oh look, you just had to was your face more and do hot compresses and there you go, your acne is gone" when that wasn't even close to true. The severe acne I had was genetically related, and to hear myself get scorned for something I couldn't control in the first place without medical intervention made me feel helpless. I feel you do a really good job in this video showing how things that arn't in peoples control, or arn't normally naturally acheivable are the expectation from people, and how profit driven motives just really exploit people's insecurities and ignorances. Good video.
As a guy who struggles with body image, this hit close to home. I rarely see men talking about body image issues, but this video made me remember that I'm not alone. It's funny how, at this point, we are so habituated to the photoshopped images and quite literally unachievable standards of beauty bestowed upon us regardless of gender that we need to have these things pointed out to us. Looking forward to any other content you end up uploading on this channel- and definitely link it in the gaming one like one of the comments on the community post suggested!
Never, you must NEVER stop making videos. Your content is so amazing! I’m sorry RUclips algorithm proves to be such a PITA, but I hope one or both of your channels will take off so we’ll get to see some great content made with heart and passion!!
Never would have thought that by staring at myself in the mirror instead of compulsively taking pictures of myself I was engaging in the healthier form of narcissism.
wow I'm so glad you spent time covering men's beauty standards!! I've always been really insecure about my physical appearance, but somehow it never occurred to me that my expectations might be based on inauthentic bodies. like, platitudes about loving yourself seemingly only go so far if the stereotypical masculine physique is unnatural. I also really liked the anecdote about skin looking bad up-close, good advice both figuratively and literally. thanks for the vid! it was thought provoking. hope to see more like this sometime :)
Wow, I stumbled upon this video by accident and have been pretty blown away by it … and by that I don't especially talk about the topic that kept me engaged but me realising that I have no criticism in terms of production value, research, script, editing, pacing, audio, political & sociological mindset and overall worldview. Pretty damn good video essay!
Dude... instantly subscribed and ticked the bell on both channels. writing, content, editing, structure .. it is so good and on point. It was an absolute pleasure and I'm very thankful for you putting in such effort!
Just discovered this gem after being a massive fan of your gaming vids for a while....I hope you continue this kind of work; this is crucial information that the majority never expose themselves to (hence the majority following the mainstream in all aspects of their lives). Most people cannot and will not recognize that they will swallow and digest _anything_ the establishment feeds them.
I've been subbed to your main channel for a couple of years now and I never knew, or more likely, forgot that you had a second channel. It's good stuff, wish there was more to watch!
excellent work. i'm really happy to see your prodigious skill used for something other than video games (personal, momentary satiety of video game related content). i really hope this video and this channel takes off
I spend a lot of time on a discord server offering advice and an open ear to people ten to 20 years younger than myself. This was an instant share. Thank you for all the care and work you put into your videos.
When I was younger, I went through a very rough patch where I was feeling extremely awful about my appearance and seriously considered steroids, even went to doctors and crashed my test levels the days leading up to the visit, nowadays I'm glad that mindset is behind me and I'm happy with the progress I'm making. Social media can make life tough sometimes. Also super glad to hear some of your thoughts about more stuff, I'm a huge fan of your main channel and am absolutely open to more content from you overall.
I was self conscious about my appearence but now I can blame it on social media culture, and my genetical and phycological need for aproval and insecurities. Thanks video, I love you
I came here after watching your dark souls video which I loved and gotta say this video was amazingly done and so eye opening I love how you cant tackle specific subjects so eloquently keep up the good work!!
It is an incredible video. A problem I have never actually thought about, with a detailed explanation. I also like how you also showed the problems for men. Most of the time, men's problems are ignored, even when they are for both genders, or even belittled. The best part of the video is the Tyson Fury part. The unrealistic standards are clearly shown there, with just a mere look. This is how the elite of the elite of strong athletes look, and this how celebrities look. Though this video had an unintended effect: now my resolve for cosmetic surgery and steroids is higher. It looks good, and its safer and cheaper than before. It is unhealthy for society, but it is in my best self-interest.
Excellent and thorough video! I wish my teen self had been fully aware of this. Kids, more than ever, are bombarded by conflicting beauty and body ideals.
I missed the community post and found second channel while incidentally looking for something else on main one by sheer chance. And I've got to say, this vid goes hard. I can understand not wanting to put it on main channel for youtube reasons, but if you see this comment, come on man, mention the second channel like on the very end of next video in case some people would never notice. Sincerely.
Great video, my dude. You tied everything together here very well--especially showing how both men and women are affected similarly but slightly differently. We humans can have exceedingly fragile egos, can't we?
I was pretty skeptical going into this. I’ve viewed plastic surgery and filters as mostly harmless. It doesn’t hurt anyone and people like the way they look afterwards, right? But this vid definitely convinced me otherwise. I never really use social media and I have maybe three pictures of myself from this year so I guess I’m just out of touch with how it is for other people. And as a long time follower I have to say this is my favorite video you’ve made. Truly excellent stuff, I’ll be recommending this as much as possible.
Damn, this is a great video! I thought I get the idea. Your video still opened my eyes, big time. It’s just so thoughtfully analysed, comprehensive and paired with examples in a very evocative way. I love your tone that feels honest and compasionate, non-judgmental but cheeky when it’s called for.
This is an excellent, video well research, well delivered but I that what I have come to expect from some who has been producing so much good content for so long.
I love that new channel and the "risk" you take with the change of topic. Its unfortunate to have to call that a risk but in any case im happy to see more and diverse quality content from you!
You have my favorite RUclips channel, so it's awesome to see you coming out with other kinds of content. Hopefully it doesn't slow down your reviews too much. :D
Oh I’m glad I got this in my recommended, I was wondering why this was from a different channel, but then I realized it was Neverknowsbest and I love your content! Cant wait to finish this, I’ve been wondering about plastic surgery lately, personally I think it looks terrible, and people who get it usually looked fine before
Why do you worry people won't watch? I can only speak for me, but a new video from you is an event. Please give yourself more credit. You deserve it.
Because of the harsh realities of how youtube works. Video success is dependent on click through rate and watch time and while some viewers are fans who are willing to give anything a chance, many other people are just casual viewers who need to be interested in the topic to click a video or watch past the first few minutes. I’ve never seen KnowsBestNever and NeverKnowsBest in the same room together.
Suspicious...
this was...incredible. I think you substantially shifted my view of the world, with a single video, for the better. Thank you. thank you so so much.
Lemme pile on and say that I was gonna write something similar, I'm going to share this video and its clips with as many of my friends as I can :)

I feel you do a really good job in this video showing how things that arn't in peoples control, or arn't normally naturally acheivable are the expectation from people, and how profit driven motives just really exploit people's insecurities and ignorances.
Good video.
Thank you for that video. World needs this right now. It's the best video on beauty standards I've ever seen.
Dude.... what a fantastic video. I feel bad for checking your second channel just after RUclips messed you up.
I came from your old channel. If you keep doing these kind of contents this channel will definitely hit sky high.
More content from NeverKnowsBest? Why yes I'll watch instantly.
Man the bit about analysing ourselves in the mirror hit deep.
Great video dude!
wow I'm so glad you spent time covering men's beauty standards!! I've always been really insecure about my physical appearance, but somehow it never occurred to me that my expectations might be based on inauthentic bodies. like, platitudes about loving yourself seemingly only go so far if the stereotypical masculine physique is unnatural. I also really liked the anecdote about skin looking bad up-close, good advice both figuratively and literally. thanks for the vid! it was thought provoking. hope to see more like this sometime :)
it is a great injustice that a video as good as this only gets this little views.
I thank you for your time and effort in creating this.
Content like this should be required viewing in schools.
Great to see Carpenter Brut song on here :).
As for your content, great to inform the world about the way these things work. Good job.
Promoting you through the algorithm!
This was one of the best videos I've ever watched, ever. Incredible Work.
Dude... instantly subscribed and ticked the bell on both channels. writing, content, editing, structure .. it is so good and on point. It was an absolute pleasure and I'm very thankful for you putting in such effort!
Great content! Look forward to seeing your takes outside of the gaming sphere.
Came here from the dark souls video on the other channel, glad I did. Great stuff as always.
This video absolutely slapps and I will happily watch anything you make man, whatever channel it's on. You rock
One of the most important videos on the site!
as great as ever, love from China🇨🇳
ni haody :)
Absolutely awesome video. Needs to be said and your delivery and structure is so excellent for this subject matter. Well done
I've been subbed to your main channel for a couple of years now and I never knew, or more likely, forgot that you had a second channel. It's good stuff, wish there was more to watch!
Your videos are brilliant. Your ability to analyse complex, real world issues is highly impressive.
The bourgeoise have literally monopolized sexiness. The proletariat must seize the means of hotness.
excellent work. i'm really happy to see your prodigious skill used for something other than video games (personal, momentary satiety of video game related content). i really hope this video and this channel takes off
I spend a lot of time on a discord server offering advice and an open ear to people ten to 20 years younger than myself.
This was an instant share. Thank you for all the care and work you put into your videos.
Its a shame the algorithm didnt help this one, great video i am glad i checked the new channel.
Holy shit Never, this Video is incredible! Everyone should see it, and I‘ll do my part to ensure they do!
Thanks for the reminder. I wasn't feeling in the mood for a topic like this when the video first came out, but I'm glad that I watched it now.
I loved this. Also commenting for the youtube algorithm gods. Please keep making content NKB!
I was self conscious about my appearence but now I can blame it on social media culture, and my genetical and phycological need for aproval and insecurities. Thanks video, I love you
Please keep doing this kind of content too. Amazing work by the way.
I like listening to your videos because of your voice, humor, and insight. On both channels
Wasnt expecting to see this at all from you. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Love your video essays.
im really glad I dont use any social media except youtube now lol. Surreal stuff
Fantastic video
This is good. I certainly wouldn't mind more content like this. You have my support.
One of my favorite videos you uploaded, keep up the great work!
I came here after watching your dark souls video which I loved and gotta say this video was amazingly done and so eye opening I love how you cant tackle specific subjects so eloquently keep up the good work!!
Great video, glad I randomly decided to check your community posts on the other channel
I deeply admire you for stepping out of the box and being creative enough to pursue other topics. Congratulations, man
Excellent and thorough video!
Sincerely.
Don't say that nobody was gonna watch it i loved every minute
Great video, my dude. You tied everything together here very well--especially showing how both men and women are affected similarly but slightly differently. We humans can have exceedingly fragile egos, can't we?
I really appreciate the effort you so clearly put into your videos. Thank you!
This video was incredible. Thank you for making this. This should be required watching for the entire population.
21:00 naomi wolf mentions this in the beauty myth
A very good, unexpected, and important video.
Please do more when you feel like you have a good subject to cover.
Just came from your recent Dark Souls essay. This video was great! Subbed to both channels.
dude why the hell am i just finding your second channel. fantastic video
That Hotline Miami OST underlines how psychotic it all is, among all else. Mwah! Great job.
i recently got a VERY expensive hair restoration procedure done. this shit is too true
That ending was excellent. Also the rest of it too.
This video was great. Your insights are always thought-provoking for me
This is an excellent, video well research, well delivered but I that what I have come to expect from some who has been producing so much good content for so long.
This is a very good video
Good job man! I loved this video! You ended it super passionately with your speech! I hope to see more stuff like this!
Cant wait to finish this, I’ve been wondering about plastic surgery lately, personally I think it looks terrible, and people who get it usually looked fine before
Thanks for the video. Truly a sad truth.
