  • The world's TALLEST MAN to have ever lived! (Robert Pershing Wadlow)
    Robert Wadlow, known as the 'Gentle Giant' of Alton, Illinois, USA, is widely regarded as the tallest human being of all time (certainly for whom there is irrefutable proof).
    Wadlow reached a height of 8 feet 11.1 inches and weighed 449 pounds!
    After a short illness brought on by a faulty leg brace and a subsequent infection, Robert Wadlow died tragically in his sleep at just 22 years of age.
    (February 22, 1918 -- July 15, 1940)
    Here is an excellent external link for more information on this extraordinary man, the tallest of all time!

    The music -- called "Americana" -- was composed by Kevin MacLeod! Visit his website here: incompetech.com...

    I grew up in Robert Wadlow's home town and my mother went to school with him. He was recognized first and foremost as a true gentleman and he was never viewed as a freak by anyone in Alton. Those who knew him, my mother included, never had an unkind thing to say about him.

    Anyone else with the class photo first looked at the tallest guy in the back thought it was him and then suddenly see this huge giant appear lol.

    A kind sweet soul, denied an easier life. Mr. Wadlow had to endure his few means to make a living and did what existed. He was no freak or side show just a fellow human being trying to survive in our world. Gentle giants are few and far between and he was one of those. God's peace Mr. Wadlow.

    No one can beat Robert Wadlow. Unfortunatly, gigantism is as bad as cancer. Yes, its good to be tall, but to be too huge, you end up in living up less years than other people.

    • @ijustgottahotdog
      @ijustgottahotdog 9 лет назад +54

      Yeah it is tragic, because the bigger the person is. The harder the heart has to work. The heart can only pump so much blood before it wears out. Also the heart may try to enlarge itself to keep up with the large size and give out..

    • @gorillazserGiO
      @gorillazserGiO 9 лет назад +3

      And if the person is short as f*? :( hahah

    • @PedroSacramento2022
      @PedroSacramento2022 9 лет назад +9

      Are you refering to dwarfism?

    • @PedroSacramento2022
      @PedroSacramento2022 9 лет назад +35

      If you are refering to dwarfism, the effects are the opposite of gigantism. The heart, instead being huge, its tiny and as everyone knows, small hearts pump much faster than a "normal" size human heart. Well, the end result of this is simple: The person with dwarfism, and I mean the the ones that are the size of dolls, will die by Myocardial infarction, what we call as heart attack.

    so awesome not only his size but that he was such a cool guy at the same time. They said he never really got mad and the only time he used his size to his advantage was playing harmless jokes like putting peoples hats up high in places they couldnt get too. Must have been awesome to grow up with him. As awesome as it was one Cant help but wonder how tall he would have grown too if he hadnt left us so soon. IF his brother who i think is still with us reads this its a shame he had to go so young cause he seemed so cool. My sincere condolences.

  • @jackm4178
    @jackm4178 6 лет назад +1

    Absolutely mind boggling to think of his size. Just a shade under 9 feet tall. And yet he was a very gentle young man, respected by his classmates and all in town, he never tried to harm anyone. And while he made circus appearances he would not be exhibited in a costume or like some sort of freak. He appeared in one of the tailored suits you see him wear in these photos, walk around, wave to the crowd and then leave. He had dignity. His shoes he did indeed get for free for doing tours for the shoe company, would you believe his shoes were size 37? In any case he sounds like he would have been wonderful to know and I wish I could have met him, but being born in 1979 this would have been quite impossible (he was born just about a month after my grandfather was, I didn't know that). RIP Robert.

    • @randomwater693
      @randomwater693 10 лет назад

      That's considered goal tending or something. He's gonna have to move at least a bit, and people can just run around him and he will be too slow. Basically if you're past 7'5 then you're most likely going to be too slow and weak.

    • @easytherepilgrim2339
      @easytherepilgrim2339 10 лет назад

      Random Water It's not goaltending....what you mean is it's a 'lane violation'. You can't just stand under the basket. You have to move out a few feet and then back in.

    • @randomwater693
      @randomwater693 10 лет назад

      My bad, goal tending is when you try to touch the ball when someone shot it close to the rim. But yeah, like I said, he'd have to move and he cant just stand there. Otherwise centers in the NBA would just be standing there with there arms up all the time...

    He was so tall because of hyperplasia of the pituitary gland. It stops the body from stopping to grow. So if he had lived longer he would have kept growing. On average throughout his entire life he grew 4 inches a year and it never slowed down. Obviously at some point you would die from being too tall because your skeleton couldn't support your weight and your heart wouldn't be strong enough to pump blood through your whole body. But we don't know at what height and weight that would happen. He was fairly slim but at his death he weighed 490 lbs. (220 kg) So in theory he could've grown to 9',10',11' maybe even larger. He died because he got a blister that got infected and he had autoimmune disorder so his body couldn't fight it. If he didn't have that disorder and he stayed healthy who knows how big he could've gotten?

      Donna Clifton
      Similar but not exactly. Robert had gigantism while Andre had acromegaly. Acromegaly means Andre's growth plates did seal so he couldn't grow any taller. But his feet, hands, skull grew wider year after year.

    OH and here's some advice that will surely irritate you, but I mean it to be in the purest constructive critical way.... when you edit this type of collage, let the photos have some staying power after they fade in. I'm just taking in the magnificence of this guy's height over the others and "poof"... the picture is already fading out. Kind of a tease for my imagination. Let us study it!

      Scott Matheson his joints and tendons wouldn't be able to handle the weight that he could lift. the information on him said that he had super human strength as well. they didn't give any exact numbers but just said he was inhumanly strong. if he attempted to lift weights he joints and tendons aren't meant to handle the weight that he was capable of pushing.

      depends how much weight he tries to lift. If he would have used a moderate weight (for his strength) maybe it would have helped him to make his joints and tendons stronger

    If you liked this then check out Angus MacAskill, He was from an Island of Scotland, 7ft 9 and he could lift a 1300kg (2800lbs) ship anchor off the ground. Elders witnessed him lifting a fully grown horse over a fence. Most people 7ft+ tend to be weak and frail due to pressure on bones so storied real strong giants are rare. Angus never had gigantism either, just naturally tall. Awesome guy
