I learned about Robert as a child, while reading the Guiness Book of World Records. That was pretty much all there was to read about him, for the local libraries had nothing else. When I first got the internet, one of the first things I did was look for information about him. As time went by I enjoyed reading whatever I could find. Not only about him but others of great height, like Andre the Giant. In 2007 I was diagnosed with Acromegaly. When the doctor told me, I knew exactly what she was describing. I had read it all before about Robert. As my health gradually got worse I would read about Robert. Read about how well mannered he was, always with a smile. I would imagine just how rough it was for him, with his joints in pain just moving from place to place. Yet he never complained. What an inspiration he remains to this day, at least for me. We were blessed by God with this Man. A great blessing indeed.

Let me tell you, the watchers of this film documentary on Bob Wadlow: Back in 1987, I began working at an independent family shoe store in Sandy Springs (Atlanta), Georgia called Swofford Shoes. Mr. Al Swofford was the founder/owner and his business was actually run by two of his tree kids (grown of course). Well, in the store, there was one of Robert Wadlow's last shoes he wore in the late 1930's made by International Shoe Company (who was for many years, the largest manufacturer of various brand shoes). That shoe - a left shoe of dark brown dress tie-up design was the size "37 and-a-half" mentioned by the person of International Shoe in this documentary (that was made in 1975). Inside the shoe at the toe area insole was faintly the imprints of some of Robert's toes!
Lots of the younger kids who saw the shoe high up on a pair of steel display pegs, nearly all the time commented on the shoe. All of us who worked at the store had told the same story of who's it was and how the Swofford family got that shoe (which was somewhere in the early 1960's via a sales rep of International Shoe who had it and seemingly like Mr. Al Swofford very much since he was selling some of the International Shoe brands)
I have a few photos of it...even in the Summer of 1996, polished up the shoe. It took literally a whole can of brown polish to bring back as much luster it could take since the shoe leather was very dry!
Swofford's is no longer around. Went out of business in the Summer of 2001 after 45 years being around. The name was also in two or three other locations from the later 1940's in the Carolinas and Florida I think.
Anyway...Bob Pershing Wadlow was an interesting human being. Would have like to have met him way back when in his days.
Oh...another true intresting story of "tall people"... Back in the summer of 1975, I was working at Wm. H. Block's main downtown Indianapolis store and at the beginnings of my long career shoe selling and, some mangement (with several different companies, including Swofford's). One day, while hurring fast to one of my favorite lunchtime eating places, I was turning left on the sidewalk about to head on down busy U.S. 40 (Washington Street) when I almost ran into the tallest woman I had ever seen: Sandy Elaine Allen (1955 - 2008) at 7'7" tall. She was (according to the Guinness World Records book) the tallest woman in the world. Turns out, Sandy was in town on a promotional tour of some kind. Sandy had the same medical condition as Bob Wadlow had: overactive pituitary gland. There have been since Ms. Allen's years, other women as or taller than she but...that day, when I was around 25, I'll not forget!
