I can totally relate to the shocked looks and reactions people give you when you tell them you can’t sleep. I’m hoping for someone to say they’ve been there and understand, or they have a family member with that, or something, you know?

Do you think using the phrase "my insomnia" is hurtful? The fact that when we struggle with a bad night we think "it's" back makes me think that phrasing it in such a way creates this idea of a "thing" rather than no it's just thoughts that I am having vs. a thing outside of our control that is coming upon us. In fact "it" never goes away but rather we are no longer afraid of not sleeping because we have understanding. We didn't beat the "it" but rather understood our thought processes and behaviors which caused us to relax which caused sleep...Thank you Daniel and Maja for this episode. It still amazes me how much we suffer and we don't have to. That there really are answers!

@@jenniferlee9029 how are you going now? I’ve improved since I used to average 1-3 hours of sleep a night. Now I sleep, but it’s unfortunately so broken. I keep waking continuously. It will be so nice to put my head on a pillow and sleep though (like I used to) but hopefully with more time.

I'm soo glad I saw this I have a skin condition and have migraines I put pressure on myself that if I don't sleep well my skin will flare up and I will get a migraine and guess what I have noticed which has took a long time to realise as I was obsessing about sleep it's not the lack of sleep that triggers it but my anxiety to it or infact my anxiety to anything might make it trigger!! If I have a bad nyt or very occasionally a sleepless night and I don't react to it I'm OK if I go into panic attack mode my skin can flare more. Great video ❤

    Hi Daniel,
I’m writing this as I’m running on 1, maybe 2 hours of sleep if I was lucky. I had a panic attack- my ears were ringing, heart was pounding and I felt dizzy all of a sudden. I also play a lot of VR and video games, I played VR right before bed so I know that didn’t help. I play it a lot with my long distance partner & I’m afraid of saying no to him. I’m also afraid of asking him if I can go to bed on weekends at the same time as weekdays as he thinks it’s ’too early’ and I should ‘stay up because it’s a weekend’. But that’s not my main problem.
I recently discovered your videos after browsing the internet from panic, I found you through a Reddit post about FFI and SFI. The reason I’m familiar with those 2 is the reason this whole mess started. I was watching videos about disturbing things around the internet (watching those kinds of videos used to be my guilty pleasure- I blame my curiosity) and I stumbled upon a man that suffered from one of the two that documented videos of his decline. I’m not sure whether he suffered from FFI or SFI as I stopped watching once I heard ‘fatal insomnia’ & seen how his sleep was affected. I can’t go back to that video since I don’t want to go into a panic again. If anybody can explain which he suffered from & what age he was when he got it that would be great. The channel is Eudoxia Mysteries ‘Disturbing Parts of the Internet’.
Anyways not gonna go into too much detail but I’ve never suffered from sleep this bad until now. My anxiety has also never been this bad. I’ve pulled all nighters in the past but that was on purpose. I’ve also struggled with my anxiety but that never affected my sleep. I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, which makes sense since I think a lot differently than the average person. LIKE A LOT. I’ll explain more in another comment since I’m not sure if there’s a limit on what you can type in a single comment.

The first time my anxiety was bad I had to take 1-2 months off of school to do therapy. I was convinced I was dying of a heart attack but realized it was just my anxiety. It took time but I got back to normal.
The second time my anxiety was bad was when the insomnia problem started. I went off of anxiety medication for a year (or two) due to not having a need for it. In that time I met my partner whom I’ve been with for 2-3 years. I was originally prescribed it at my final year of highschool. Summer of 2023 was when I was going through the most stress, I was laid off of work so I had no money coming in at the time and I had to make payments (bed and phone)- if I didn’t pay for them I wouldn’t have them. So I took a paid program learning how the job process works (résumés, job interviews, finances/budgeting, etc) and this program would help me find a new job. That’s what brought the anxiety back, stress, plus depression. After the program I decided to go back on the anxiety medication. Long story short the medication is what caused the sleeping problems according to the internet. Eventually my sleep did go back to normal again although it wasn’t 8 hours. I went to the ER twice, 1st time I was given Quetiapine but it didn’t work. 2nd time I was given Trazodone and I’ve been taking it ever since. I also talked with a walk in therapist & social worker and that helped with the recovery process.

Fast forward to January when I saw that video. It traumatized me so much I feel my mental health has gotten worse because of it. It’s a vicious cycle, I’m anxious during the day which makes it hard to sleep at night and if I don’t get any sleep the process repeats. I’ve visited the ER once already and explained to a doctor and the mental health person (unsure what you would call them, they do evaluations) about FFI and SFI and they told me not to worry. I admit the reassurance was nice but she said ‘oh you’ll forget about it in a week’ and I HAVEN’T. It’s seriously hard to forget something as scary as a deadly disease.
In the meantime I’m doing walk in therapy because there’s a 3-8 month wait for a therapist, I got referred in September 2023. I explained to the lady at the walk ins about it, she said not to worry and my social worker told me the same thing. I went to my family doctor and a nurse practitioner and they also said not to worry. So lots of reassurance, enough for a regular person to get over it but guess what? I STILL HAVEN’T. No matter how much reassurance I get my brain goes to the ‘what if’s’. What if these doctors are wrong? Doctors have been wrong before.
I’ve been working on distracting myself from these thoughts, doing things I like, spending time with family, but it still lingers in my thoughts no matter what I do. I’m even trying meditation/breathing but it still doesn’t take my mind off of it. I get breathing/meditation takes practice & time to work but there’s so many meditation videos out there I don’t know what would work for me if it even works effectively.

Not to mention there’s waaay too many videos on what to do to help you sleep, I could browse the internet for an eternity until I find something that actually works. I’ve tried so much, keeping my room dark, turning off electronics, making sure my room is the correct temperature (too hot or too cold & I can’t sleep), cutting off caffeine, getting to bed the same time & waking up the same time, even eating foods that prevent insomnia but I’m so scared that none of this has been working. I used to treat sleep like it was nothing and now it’s just a performance to me, always asking myself ‘will I get sleep tonight?’ I’m always dreading when the day ends too because then I’m like: will I make it to tomorrow? Will things ever get better for me or will I keep suffering?
I’m so scared of leaving my family and partner suddenly, it’s hard not to think about death.. I want to live long enough to get married, start a family, experience what life has to offer but I feel like I’m trapped in my mind. I don’t know if I’ll ever be happy/enjoy life again. I’m so focused on sleep that I’m afraid it’s affecting my relationships as I have been distant/quiet. My parents are concerned and I feel like a burden to my partner. I hate the thought of something happening to me and him moving on to someone new. I don’t like that I wouldn’t ever be able to see him again.
I’ve been losing weight due to this anxiety and it’s scaring me because rapid weight loss is one of the symptoms of SFI. I understand that most of the symptoms are similar to Alzheimer’s/Dementia so worrying would be ridiculous but I constantly worry about developing more symptoms.

I feel like my only way out is suicide because then I’d be free from my mind. But I have such a low pain tolerance I couldn’t do anything to harm myself. So if suicide won’t kill me then I’m afraid my anxiety will. Anxiety does SO much to a body.
Please, I’m begging you or anybody to bring me some relief. I have a ton of questions about FFI/SFI, if you could answer them that would be great. Maybe give tips on how I can fix my destructive way of thinking about sleep. I’m so desperate I’ll do anything to give myself control!!

Hi Coach Daniel, after struggling with insomnia for a few months I have found your content and after found myself sleeping much easier! However, I recently experienced a speed bump…my parents have adopted a new puppy. There was one night where the puppy would not calm down. Through the wall I could hear her banging up against her crate or barking. I could hear my parents shuffling around. And that caused me to be really hyper aroused and not sleep. The next night I couldn’t calm myself down and was just waiting to hear the puppy in her crate and start barking, which she never did, but I still couldn’t sleep. The night after that I could hear the puppy a little bit early on but then she quieted but I was still hyperaroused and just anticipating hearing her again. I don’t know how I can get out of this anticipatory state of mind, thinking that I’m going to hear her or something else that is going to keep me awake. Any advice or a video on this topic?

Coach Daniel since I’ve been suffering from insomnia I have also been suffering from irregular menstrual cycles that are getting heavier. I’m sure this is due to lack of sleep cause I was fine before. I’m also concerned about the insomnia causing my cortisol to be dysregulated - and causing weight gain or thyroid issues 😣all these concerns and worries give me immense anxiety attacks before bed and my brain makes it extremely difficult for me to fall asleep. It just puts more pressure and anxiety on me to sleep and i can’t. How can I be okay with befriending wakefulness knowing that the insomnia is causing such hormonal issues and weight gain for me ?😣 these intrusive thoughts get me into a panic and anxious state and put pressure on sleeping which I can’t anymore :(

Putting pressure on yourself to sleep would be likened to you Putting pressure on yourself to feel hungry! Is it your job to feel hungry? Nope. Find peace in knowing that your only responsibility is physically lying down; What happens there after is none of your business. The only thing that prevents sleep from happening is you wanting to make it happen yet it's not your job. I have been in the darkest place with insomnia and may everyone struggling come to findout the real truth behind that struggle
