While this isnt a game for me, I appreciate the review because there have been plenty of times that a game would have flew under my radar. I hope this is a good addition for the fan base or a hidden gem for those new to the series.
As someone that was once a fan of early RWBY, I've set my own feelings on RT and RWBY's constantly worsening story aside. Looking at this from a strictly gameplay standpoint and ignoring the RWBY elements? I'm honestly not impressed with what I'm seeing. This looks like a reskinned Shantae game if WayForward decided to mail it in and make a half assed Shantae game. Based on observation and multiple gameplay videos, I feel like everything this game attempts to do has been done far better elsewhere (and in some cases by the very companies that worked on this) RWBY as an IP is practically BEGGING for a fighting game. The four main characters and one of the villains were featured in BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle a few years back. I find it impossible to believe that ASW couldn't take the BlazBlue engine, include 16-20 characters in a first attempt (seriously, this IP has a cast that can rival the likes of Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat), and apply that BB visual novel style that they use in their story mode to a RWBY game that either retells the events of Volumes 1-3, or does an original story set in between volumes. If they did a game recapping the actual show, the next game could easily cover the next set of volumes and use the progression of time within the series as the excuse for character rebalancing, adding new skills, etc. With both ASW and WayForward involved, they could have easily made a game that was like River City Girls, or done something that was a throwback to older arcade beat 'em ups like the classic TMNT arcade game. Instead, we got this. I'm honestly not sure if this was a choice on the part of WayForward/ASW, or if Rooster Teeth essentially forcing them to make Volume 7.5 severely limited what they could do with the IP. Either way, I generally expect much better out of both of these companies.
It's honestly not too amazing as a game, but it is a good entry in the series that fleshes out the setting of Volumes 7 and 8, and just kinda fun for a more casual playing experience. As a fan of Metroid and Hollow Knight I was disappointed, but as a fan of RWBY I'm having a good time.
Art style is about all this IP has going for it at this point. As for the game itself, this does not appear to be the best work of WayForward and ASW. I'd save the money and get all the Shantae games instead if you haven't played those. Same developer (WayForward), and the later games in the series seem to be what they were going for with Arrowfell, but done on a much better scale.
@@SwitchCorner I mean month's wife killed him and left rooster teeth leaderless. The show use to be about cool action scenes. Now it's just a mellow drama magic school zombie show. That said again objectively this is a bad show but I love it. It's so entertaining
@@dr.wolfstar1765 I have no idea where you got zombies from RWBY, but okay. They're fighting monsters and they use unique weapons and powers to do so, also they're not in a school anymore. Also monty's wife killed him? What? He died of an allergic reaction.
@@wjsgamer Monty died of an allergic reaction from in a medical procedure. It wasn't known to the doctors but know to wife that he would have an allergic reaction. So yes she'd to blame. When I say zombies, I mean the grim. They aren't alive their dead without souls and just mimic animals. They act like zombies. The girls just got their huntress degrees so yea the show is about them being in school because 85% of thr show they are in school
The footage you used near the end of the video (from approx 9:15 onwards) has to be from a different version of the game (PS5, XSX or PC) because it looks like 60fps gameplay even though the rest of the video looks like 30fps, which I'm assuming the Switch version runs at?
0:43 "I heard it started strong, but has gone downhill ever since." Boy, if that isn't the understatement of the last five years or so when it comes to this series. Between the creator passing (RIP Monty), an obvious hit to the quality of fight scenes due to said passing as fight choreography was his main animation specialty, the multiple behind the scenes issues with Rooster Teeth, the sheer hypocrisy that runs rampant in the company (fire Vic Mignogna without proof or police reports, yet keep your VP for weeks after the story of him beating his wife broke?) the thinly veiled political stand ins, multiple RT staff drinking the TDS Kool-Aid (regardless of political affiliation, never try to mix your political views into the story in an obvious manner as you'll piss off half your fans), the attempted cancelation of Tow Ubukata by Arryn Zech (Blake) while he was writing for a RWBY anime adaptation/spin-off (potentially putting the entire project in jeopardy), and a story that somehow gets worse/more woke with each passing year. Oh yeah, and let's not forget the most recent controversies to come out of Rooster Teeth about apparent racism, sexism, and homophobia. You know? All the things this woke ass company LOVES to preach about in recent years, yet they apparently are unable to practice what they preach from atop that soapbox they love to stand on. The most disgusting part to me is the fact that anytime Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross face ANY kind of criticism about the writing, they'll immediately hide behind the excuse of "staying true to Monty's vision." These assholes constantly use their dead friend as a shield for their own weak writing when Monty himself prior to passing had half joked about having to explain various anime tropes to these two numbskulls whenever they didn't understand why he wanted something done a certain way. This series started so damn promising, but due to the company/people in charge, I honestly feel like no resolution would be the most merciful ending at this point.
Nice review I'm looking forward to the game! If you want to get into the show now is probably the best time to do so with volume 9 right around the corner. The show isn't 100% perfect with the writing but to me its still worth a shot
I loved the cartoon for the first 4...5..6 honestly I don't remember where I left off on. Anyways I'm a little disappointed that this isn't more if a metroidvania then it is? So I'll probably wait for a sale.
@@gamerbeast3616 that's pretty closed minded, don't you think? people are allowed to have opinions, and hit stun is a huge issue in a lot of games, including the Yakuza series
@@gamerbeast3616 Yeah, I'm sure Lens is devastated that some rando on RUclips that still blindly thinks everything with the RWBY name on it is amazing doesn't like them.
It'd be one thing if the game was a half assed Shantae clone made by a company no one ever heard of. It's another to churn out this game as the company that actually MAKES Shantae.
Grimm Eclipse was ok as a first attempt considering that it was done 100% in house, but let's be real: it isn't a very high bar. Plus, considering the companies in play here (WayForward/ASW), this is a highly mediocre release.
RWBY used to be great when it first started. It fell off pretty hard though and I bailed on it entirely once they announced they were parting ways with Vic Mignogna who voiced probably my favorite character in the show. At this point this game is a hard pass for me.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle showed how good these characters could look in a video game. I'm not digging these bigheaded sprites.
It also showed how you can neuter the characters of 3 different fighting games

That is some low level gameplay your showing. Are you rushing through or what 😂
