I'll stand by my initial opinion that "CODA" won not because folks thought it should've, but because they didn't want to award "Power of the Dog" beyond Director. "Worst Person in the World" or "Tick Tick Boom" should've been contenders to win; the fact that neither were even nominated for Picture is an even greater sin.

Encanto's Oscar win was validated. That film was awesome and its thought-provoking generational subtext and songs are still relevant and slaps to this day and also all of the animated films nominated that year were very much deserving to win. Its just sucks that they will only choose one but that's how it is in Award shows only 1 will win. ☺️☺️

Not only did All Quiet win over Babylon, but I could think of at least 5 or 6 scores that were far better and weren't even nominated that year: The Batman, Guillermo del Toro's Pinnoccio, Pearl, Glass Onion... Even if they didn't want to award Babylon or any of these other films, they could've at least given the award to John Williams, who is long due an Oscar win, at that way The Fablemans wouldn't have gone empty handed...

All Quiet won that score because as a popular foreign language movie, the foreign and older Academy members usually blindly vote for certain movies in the categories that they watched fully, I'm willing to bet you that most of the older members did not even watch Babylon after the first 10 minutes after that unnecessary scene with the elephant ****, so they never got to hear that score. I remember watching Babylon in the theatre in LA and saw at least half a dozen walkouts after that scene.

  • @marcochen9117

IMO i still feel like power of the dog winning wouldn't have been met with that much of better reception. The audience reception on that movie is even worse, and it'll reinforce some beliefs of the academy going with super serious auteur cinema that no one likes. Thats why stuff like green book won over Roma. POTD is at 6.8 on imdb and 3.7 on letterboxd, with CODA being at 8 imdb and 3.9 letterboxd

@@FrakkinToasterLuvvaSo how would you merit audience reception? I mean personally you can love a movie, but I'm trying to gauge the audience reception. I mean even with letterboxd as well, it isn't necessarily loved by the audiences. Don't think there is any fans of anything downvoting potd, people just didn't like the movie as much as critics.

CODA winning in a year like 2021 wouldn't have been as outrageous as it was it winning over a great oscar lineup as was 2022. IMO, CODA winning over Dune will go down in history as one of the greatest crimes against cinema the Academy has ever committed😂
Hopefully they don't make the same mistake again this year with Dune Part 2...

I actually loved Nomadland, though I've only watched it one time. I found it beautiful and it moved me to tears, FM was excellent, but she could have done that performance in her sleep and still get nominated. I absolutely wanted Mulligan to win, not only is her character in Promising Young Woman so complex and original, but Mulligan rides those tonal waves flawlessly. It's truly one of the best written characters to be put to screen ever, she owns the entire film and it and she sticks with you long after it's over.

    Will Smith for Actor
    Belfast for Screenplay
    Encanto for Animated
Summer of Soul for Documentary (didn’t dislike it but Flee should have absolutely won)
Jamie Lee Curtis for Supp Actress
All Quiet for International Feature, Score, and Cinematography (Production Design win was great though)
Boy, Mole, Fox, and Horse for Animated Short
    Whale for Makeup

What Was I Made For? wins Best Song - Don't like this song and I'm Just Ken was the one people were passionate about
Belfast wins Best Original Screenplay - I hate this movie and Kenneth Branagh
American Fiction wins Best Adapted Screenplay - Didn't like this movie and Oppenheimer should have won it even if it didn't need it
The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse wins Best Animated Short - This was bad and Ice Merchants was so good
All Quiet wins Best Score - I feel you man

Hate to be the outlier, but I think the All Quiet score is pretty epic, and probably the best thing about a movie that I otherwise think is well-made, but generic. I do think the Babylon score is great (even if I dislike the film as a whole), but Justin Hurwitz has two Oscars already, so I don't think there was a need to give him another one so soon. As for Belfast, I think Don't Look Up and King Richard would have been worst choices for Best Original Screenplay, though I think Belfast was pretty meh in general.

Also while we're on the topic of Babylon I feel the need to mention that I genuinely think that one of the three biggest snubs at the Oscars in the past twenty years was Margot Robbie not getting nominated for actress. That is THE BEST acting performance I have seen from Robbie. Of the two people nominated in the category that I have seen (those being Michelle Williams, and Michelle Yeoh) I think Robbie was leagues better than the both of them combined.
