Beyond sadly, the academy awards virtually ignored the gorgeous visual aspects of this dazzlingly beautiful color movie musical, no win for color photography, totally ridiculous.
They were actually thought to have acted in extremely bad taste in using the stage light effects, through gelatin filters, etc. Critics always commented on it. I could read when the movie came out, and remember. Watching a play onstage, you are used to suspending disbelief for the (beautiful!) effects of stage lighting. Against the naturalistic experience of watching a movie, the stage lighting is kind of jarring, but they could hardly wait for just the right moment of a natural sunset, with the whole cast dressed for their parts, and ready to play them. If someone messed up, the moment of sunset would have passed, and they'd have to do yhe same thing the next beautiful day, and the next. So at 6 or 7, to 9 years old, I thought they ought to have been given some slack, especially since the colors were so beautiful in _Life_ magazine, and the previews we'd seen. I had no trouble suspending disbelief, and thought that the worst thing was to make a big deal about it, considering the trouble they'd have had achieving that effect, in a regular, naturalistic, Pacific, monotonously blue sky day (blue skies get monotonous in Florida, too). And something happened, and we actually didn't get to see it when it came around to where we lived, like we had at the drive-in, for _The King and I, Carousel_ and _Oklahoma._ Then, the deep, rich color, and the stagey, purple lighting, blended beautifully with the natural dusk surrounding us all at the drive-in. I didn't actually get to see it until I was a teenager, and it was shown on TV in the mid-late 60s. I am now 71, going on 72, and I still haven't forgotten the stink the critics raised over this movie it took us so long to actually see. In stage lights, there were three colors: cyan, magenta and lime. Color in light blends differently than how colors blend in paint. The moody, atmospheric purple of cyan + magenta, always suggested a dreamy, early evening, the time of dusk, after the sun set, always somewhat enchanted by possibility, btw. Actors and actresses would do whatever the play demanded, until the circle of "lime light" reached out and identified the person to watch, mysteriously turning the spotlight on that character a bright white.
I sang this as half of my audition and application to Music and Art High School in 1963, played a 4th grade piano piece and was accepted. However, I was also accepted at Bronx Science, and that was where my parents told me I was going.
This is so sentimental to me, when my husband was alive we had a time share in a resort Bali Hai on the south shore of Kauai where the movie was filmed. We explored the tropical forests, kayaked down Wailua river to Twin Falls where we had to hike through a forest. After he passed away I had to give up the time share, going there to this romantic place alone wouldn't be the same.
I intended to say how sorry I am that you lost your love. But the previous reply speaks to emotions more profound and eternal than loss: your undying hopes and dreams, within which the two of you can continue your soul journey forever.

I’m currently on the Indonesian Gili islands and Bali, with its volcanic peaks peering out from the clouds at sunset, is romantic in the distance. Of course it’s not Hawaii but the emotional response to this song is universal ❤️
That wasn't really about Hawaii anyhow, but places like Guam, the Marshall Islands, the Philippines, etc. There are so many island paradises, even just the Philippines has more than 7,000 islands. If you haven't found your island paradise yet then you're not trying hard enough.
I first saw South Pacific when I was 10 yrs old with my parents in the living room never even new it came out in 1958,it was a beautiful musical movie and my favorite was Bali hai cause the music sounded magical like I wanted to go an anchanted island.
First watched it with my parents on television in the early '70's. I must have been 7 or 8 and already familiar with all the songs from the record. I was very lucky to see it once in a movie theatre on a huge screen in 1986. A totally different experience, it was like seeing it for the first time. Wish I could repeat that!
Unfortunately it is not Juanita Hall's voice. I saw this movie in Wildwood NJ on the boardwalk. It may have been at the strand movie theater. The movie captivated me and helped mold me into the person I am today. Just seeing the album cover puts me in a dream world of romance and adventure. I'm still affected by it to this day.
Saw this film in 1961 in London at Dominion theatre. I was in UK a year or so. I loved It then and love It now. Certain things are old uses, but have the film and the LP. From time to time, watch It or hear It. I would like to find the lyrics in English, because I still miss some words. If any one know where I can get It that lirics I would be very thankful. Thanks
As beautiful as this music is, there's something we must remember: this woman was singing & luring a nervous Marine to a place where THIS WOMAN UP THERE ☝🏻 SINGING, had bathed, dressed & put makeup on HER DAUGHTER to present her to "American G.I." with the hopes he'd "deflower" her & feel duty bound to marry her & take her home". That reminds me of Reba McIntyre's "Fancy." When Cable said he couldn't marry the girl, it killed him inside because he DID fall for Liyat. He knew how ppl were in his hometown, and that's why he took the dangerous mission, because he knew he couldn't keep Liyat. And he died on the island.
The use of color filters in the film has been controversial ever since the film's release. But seeing it here in high definition is very effective I think.
When I was a young boy I my mother and her sister took me along to see the stage version at Drury Lane theatre in London. This mysterious song is the thing I remember - it was sung to the audience alone, not a soldier. I also remember 'I'm gonna wash that man right outa my hair' because I was fascinated by the real water in the shower.
@shoreloop you can hear Bloody Mary- Juanita Hall’s voice here on RUclips! Juanita Hall to me is just as good and she sang it in the Broadway Production as well!
@shoreloop Fun fact: Muriel Smith also dubbed Zsa Zsa Gabor's singing voice in the classic film "Moulin Rouge"! She had a really interesting career: She was the first African-American to study at the Curtis Institute, and went on to become a star of London's West End and even opera.

Although she played a Polynesian in South Pacific and a Chinese woman in Flower Drum Song, she actually was half-African American and half Irish-American. Her voice was dubbed in the movie South Pacific, although she originated the role of Bloody Mary on Broadway. She died in poverty.
