I hit the traffic backup going south at around 5 AM and was turned back north on Las Pulgas blvd. I went all the way around on Ortega Highway to eventually be able to make it South.
you were lucky compared to all the ones that could not move farhter back....thanks to the CHP FAILURE to divert traffic once they knew what the situation was.....they just simply ALLOWED vehicles to keep pouring southward when they COULD have stopped them while there were still options.....grrrr
went through here today...9am backup started at San Clemente Ca, took 3.5 hours to go about 10 miles past the crash site. we were pretty much parked for most of the time. Driving by the scene was crazy, the pics don't do justice showing the violence of the crash.
it is crazy that the freeway wasnt closed and southbound traffic told to turn back...the crash happened at 3am and the backup was still going on at 3pm. i would have turned back and cancelled my southbound drive if i was given even some info.

2 Lessons here = at 3 am don't follow close or speed when tired or drunk drivers are prevalent. Get rid of the #!X*#? who was in charge and failed to open the inside emergency lane. It looked like debris was everywhere on the outside lanes and beyond! WTF SMH
Zero excuse that CHP did NOT turn traffic back where there was still routes available! They hyst LET all the vehicles pile up....whoever is in charge is SUCH a failure! My wife was stuck for no reason simply because the CHP utterly FAILED at their jobs! Pathetic! It happened at 3 AM and they did NOTHING to prevent hundreds of folks being hopelssly stuck...there is no excuse they KNOW the area that there is no where to go!

As a retired truck driver, I used to drive this freeway all the time. I dont know what caused this, but there used to be a lot of pedestrians running across the highway all during the night. At times, children. I was told it was illegal immigrants.

Generally Harleys are Overweight bikes with less than stellar brakes (side note my wife saw ape hanger bars which are awful for controlling a motorcycle in an emergency! DONT use em! my biker brothers!)....Also Harley riders generally are not known to be the cream of the crop for high performance skills ...just saying and idk if that even played into their chances as it was not their fault what happened! just pointing out how sometimes the situation leaves you with nothing but micro seconds to react and even then someone behind YOU can thwart your own best efforts! So sad tragic 3 dead bikers. I wonder WHAT in the HELL was with the Jeep driver??? drunk? It was 3 am after all
Scenarios like this are more often than not caused by people's stupidity and irresponsibility when it comes to driving. Jeep hits median becomes stranded on freeway 🤔....another car plows into it, texting, speeding, intoxicated, these are just examples but if you paying attention and not speeding how do you run into a stranded vehicle🤔......motorcyclist then become involved, debris on the road, speeding, following to close....once again conjecture but how do you hit something if your driving/riding responsible....I mean an airplane didn't crash on all of them nor did they drive into a wall of blinding fog 🤔.....and once again a few individuals effect tens of thousands for hours because of the aftermath they caused....nobody else were involved in the crash so how come just the five.....feel sorry for the commuters stuck in this nightmare and may have had above average serious business on the road

That sucks, must've been irritating to say the least.
