Nice job. Getting ready to run a version of The Haunting to start a new group. Had to change it up quite a bit (I'm sure the players have played it before but I always like to start with it) but it's still The Haunting at it's core. 7th Edition has a set of four pre-gens, now, so that's good.
Thanks for making these videos - I have found them very useful for making getting started on Keeping much less intimidating. I'm returning to TTRPGs after a gap of 30 years and things have changed a lot. I think I've watched this one so much I could talk along to the dialogue!
Beginner keeper here planning on running The Haunting as my first scenario next month and am so glad I found your channel. Stellar work! Your scenario breakdown videos contain a plethora of tips and are truly appreciated. A HUGE thank you also for uploading the breakdown pics. These are amazing resources that will save people like me a good chunk of time while also helping keepers map out key points and events. Looking forward to catching up on all your vids! Subbed.
Thanks for the lovely comment! I hope you have fun with Call of Cthulhu, if you would like to see something covered that isn't already, just ask and i'll see what i can do.
Excellent ! This is invaluable advice. I get lost sometimes and this methodology should definitely keep me on rails. Also I am quite impressed by your in-depth analysis of the scenario, food for thoughts.
Neat, thanks. I have been planning on running a oneshot of CoC for my RPG group and I am contemplating between Dead Light and The Haunting or maybe Edge of Darkness.
Oooh, all have their benefits! It really depends on your style, and the groups tastes, i've got videos on them all! Let us know what you pick and how it goes. Happy Halloween.
Assuming only Keepers reading, if you are an investigator, turn your eyes away. I portrayed Corbitt almost as a lich, who drained energy from those who lived in the house. I had a general idea of buffing him up, so if the investigators tried to go straight to the house, they would face a much stronger enemy than the scenario had planned. As the week progressed, he began to weaken to the original stats.
That is a nice possible solution, but honestly its a really hard fight as is, i'd perhaps allow the rats roam the rest of the house with the three elements down there all at once its pretty bleak already.
@@RPGNook Honestly the only thing I would recommend is buffing corbitt if they try killing him with guns. I've heard a lot of stories of novice keepers not realizing how armor rules work against shotguns or etc. and having players gun down "poor mr. Corbitt". There should be no "Poor Mr. Corbitt".
two of my groups have solved this situation by themselves with some gasoline, no asking the landlord to level anything! :D (And I run this house as part of a tiny town close to Boston, on the border to a forest area - so there wasn't any great fire hazard. Just one house burning, and some people watching the flames, usually stained with blood)
Wow What a gem to find just two days before I run this scenario. Regarding the maps,.. may I ask how you did them - meaning what tools, programs and process? Again,.. thank you so much for sharing this very inspirational video.
Hey there, the maps were produced by someone else, there is clear credits in the download, but these are done using a dungeon builder, and then photoshopping assets on to it. I'll be updating the haunting download in the new year, as well, to be purely my own assets. Good Luck with your game, Merry Xmas.
Amazing videos! I am hooked on this channel! Thanks again for the handout packages. Quick question: Where can I find the template used for the newspaper clippings? Any help there would be much appreciated. Keep up the amazing work!
hey there glad you like the channel! The newpapers are custom handouts, but here are two links you can find some generators at: www.fodey.com/generators/newspaper/snippet.asp handouts.cthulhuarchitect.com/generator/newspapers
I had a question about the handouts. It has the pastor Michael being born only a year before corbitts death even though he is the executor of the will. Is that deliberate or a mistake? Or is the information in the hall of records the pastors son?
Hey there, nice catch. It was an error, that handout is just an extra and he doesn't have a given birth date, i changed it to 1836 instead. The pack has been updated.
@@RPGNook thanks! My players picked it up on Thursday and thought it meant something. They concluded that it's just an American thing to have father and son with the same name!
hey man! do you plan on reviewing "Star on the shore" too? Since it's a good follow up to this one, would be really nice to see your point of view of it!
Thanks - this pack and video are really good thank you . Have you any plans to record a play through of the haunting ? Would be really useful from a Keeper’s perspective how you do things on roll20
Hi, thanks for this just getting ready to run this for first time on roll20. Does the improved map of corbitt house you mentioned have dynamic lighting? I am keen to use this aspect for maps in my Cthulhu games as i think it will be good for tension! Cheers.
Dynamic light requires setting up for the maps i've got in the pack, only roll20 official content that you buy from their store will have it set up for you. However! you can set it up yourself, with a bit of time its easy enough to do. there should be plenty of DnD videos on youtube that will show you the ins and out of that feature, they use it extensively.
@@RPGNook ok thanks and thanks for the setting up walk through and the handouts etc. Much appreciated. I'll have a go at setting up the lighting and post back here if successful!
Great video, but I noticed one thing: the map on the ground floor of the house is different from the one shown in the Guardian Book in The Haunting. The first room is quite large in the original book, but in this illustration you showed, it is quite small. This confused me a lot.
Not sure what the Guardian book is? yeah, the house is different, but it doesn't really matter at all you could play it without a map or create your own layout, as long at the rooms within are mostly the same content, sizes, shape, descriptions, can all change. There are quite a few differences to the structure of the house, but the rooms within are the same. If you wish to use the original maps, go for it.
@@RPGNook That is the problem. The content of the rooms is different. In the book, it says it's a deposit. But in the illustration, they are just stairs that go to a place that I have no idea where they are, because these stairs do not exist in the book's description.
There is two sets of stairs on the map. One leads up to the second floor, across from the kitchen . The second leads to the basement, which is in the hallway near the front door. Yes it is different but they lead to the exact same locations they should. Ie the basement and the upstairs hall.
@@_FranciOficial_ that is the mud room, its been over a year since i looked at it, but if you download the package in the description all this is in the cue cards. There is a small diagram there to show the newer layout.
@@RPGNook Okey, thanks. Looked nice. Was thinking that it would be nice to make the Start Page for my Call of Cthulhu-game like an old blackboard with some info and in-game notes. =)
@@RPGNook I like the clean and logical way you lay it out. If there's one comment I have about Call of Cthulhu scenarios and books in general is that their layout style is antiquated. While the subject matter is historical, the layout should not be. So many of the great content is hidden inside walls of text and game mechanic sequences where a good flow chart would improve things. Admittedly I can see a few flow charts but they're not front and centre most of the time. Scenarios shouldn't read like a novel IMO.
