Hello there! My name is Graeme and I run RPG Nook. Here we run, test, and breakdown table top scenarios into its compoent parts and see what makes them tick. And perhaps just create a few of our own along the way. I also write for Ain't Slayed Nobody, an multi-award winning actual play podcast set in the old west.
We have a discord where we all hang out, and are always looking for new active members that wish to play regular 1 shots, and campaigns as players come and go. We play 1-3 times a week and do some live recordings here and there. You are more than welcome to join Nook and listen in, and have a chance at some games if spots become available.

Alien RPG: Hope's Last Day Scenario Breakdown
Just nabbed this from my gaming store! Eager to kick the tires!
Your Dropbox package is SO HELPFUL. Thank you so much seriously!!! And very good breakdown.
Is it at all possible for the cannibals' backstory to emerge in this adventure? Doesn't seem to be a great chance to do so as their existence is secret and they don't seem like keen historians themselves...
There are ways to do it, you could introduce journals from their ancestors in the cave, they won't read but anyone in there could find that sort of thing. You could also have something found on the guys investigation files on his pc. If you want to tell it from the cannibals themselves I'd suggest a verbal history, with them acting out their story of where they came from and why they do what they do. A ritual storytelling during the butchery of one of the victims while the others look on could be very cool. It would be delusional and dramatical wrong but add enough clues to give a patchy history.
Addition: “I dare you mechanic” - grants an extra D10 of Luck Points. Everybody only gets it once until everyone has accepted a Dare, but then it can stack for another round. Extra Motivation: Roger stole the kids candy while they were trick-or-treating! The kids dared each other to follow him secretly and saw him go in. He came out empty-handed. The candy is in the house, and the clubhouse box of secrets is likely in there too! And maybe other things he stole too!!
Stealing this~ My hook is going to be that Roger kidnapped the class hamster, Mr. Gerbils, on their week to take care of it, so they'll be blamed if it goes missing.
@@purpleblah2 Ooooh! That is nasty!!
This is one of the best breakdowns and rework suggestion videos I've found for this module! Well done and thank you! About to run it this Halloween and I loved your ideas. Would 100% support you if you began regularly posting again.
I ran this for a group last halloween, this year I'll do it again for another group. I don't mind the locking spell, I just treat it as something really weird that happened. For example if a character dies early I allow them to enter the house at a random time with another character. The door has no problem being opened from the outside, even though it's locked. I also used this when Roger's even meaner big brother showed up. I loved seeing the players run to the door in hopes of it being unlocked, only to be shocked that it was still impossible to open. I also allow the characters to show up before Roger to give them a few seconds to describe themselves and have a little role play scene. And then having Roger show up almost as a jump scare, to begin their harassment. I love playing that asshole 😂
Hey! Is ”Death Toll” (did I hear that correctly?) available for purchase somehow? Either as pdf or an actual printed book? I bought Down Darker Trails when it came out but haven’t got around to setting up a game until now, and I’d like to have some scenarios to start with before writing my own, and the two in the book will go by in no time.
Hey there it is available, there is a link to all my scenarios in the description, you can find it there. I've got the second part for it in editing so if you manage death toll and would like to playtest that too let me know.
The Roll20 Module may not come recommended, but the FoundryVTT one is pretty spectacular, as long as you also have the Core Rulebook module.
I've heard a lot of good things about Foundry, its just a bit more complex and you need a good PC to run it, and a lot of players complain about that. Everything has its ups and downs. I'll check it out one day.
@RPGNook You don't need a good PC to run it. You can run it through a Browser the same way you can run Roll20. It is a little bit of a learning curve, but it's not really that bad.
@@Siryphas being system requirement hungry is the number one constant complaint i come up against from people switching. I can't say i've looked hard into it though.
Thanks Man!
I'm about to run this with my players, but I'm also using the Eldritch hack system that really simplifies the mechanics of the game. I'm hoping they have a great time
Great tips, I'm running this now! Thanks for the video!
Have fun!
This was very helpful! Thanks!
You're welcome!
The image of Weyland Yutani at the 5:52 mark say Weylan Yutani....I am surprised that such an important piece of lore imagery would be wrong.
Love your input! I’m running it this weekend. I like the idea of having the deep one hybrids around. Would you put two on the island? (One at the generator torturing Samuel and one by the boat) Or would that be too much in terms of difficulty with the younglings about?
Probably a bit much, since there are so many younglings. You could have one of those instead looking after the boat. The idea was just to give some social interaction to the whole thing. Depends on how many players you have to be honest. But if you plan to add in the lighthouse keeper in the lamp room you could have him live and help out. Still trying to keep his gold even after all this, backstabbing the players to get away in the boat scot free with the gold while they deal with the monsters.
@@RPGNookThank you so much! 🦑
Seems like an interesting setting for sure. I'll have to run this by my Call group but I think it sounds super fun
Amazing help. Loved the story flowchart map at the start, insanely helpful. Really love your tip on playing the mob boss as scary. You have earned yourself a subscriber as I will be dropping by before running anything now ❤
Thanks, glad you found it useful!
Why is this not a movie
What's a set rep reminder from Hatfield?
Sit rep. Situation Report.
I can never read the nice organized overview you always do. Can you add a link to download and view them?
Np. There is always a link in the description.
Players that get salty in games like this honestly ruin the fun for me. What's the point if playing if you aren't having fun, even if your character dies. I think it's hilarious when bad things happen to my characters.
in a survival horror game like aliens (or call of cthulhu), you should go in expecting that your character will either die, go insane, or suffer some horrible fate worse than death though GM should make that clear before game starts, so players know it will probably happen
Really liked running this one. Tried it in the Delta Green setting. It kinda worked, but should have just kept it in CoC. Anyway, great vid!
Thanks! Good to hear someone trying the DG playthrough though! At least now we know :D
Hah you value my players as well knowledgeable of Romeo and Juliet 😂 none of my players in my group knows anything about it lol (not even myself!)
There is also the scenario Hung by the Chimney with Care that Chaosium sent out for a Christmas
I'm running this story as set in autumn, because 'deer hunting in summer' makes no sense to me. In a similar vein, I don't see hunters shooting at noises... Maybe the trigger happy pair are clueless urbanites? Wait, yes: Londoners visiting the U.S. Perfect.
Good solution! US brits don't know much about hunts, pretty niche here. :)
@@RPGNook Often bemused how in the U.K. 'hunting' appears to be an activity reserved for the elite while here in the U.S. it's more identified with the lower classes. (At least actual hunting of wild game as distinct from blasting away at released farmed birds.) And that whole business of blundering around fields straggling after a mob of hounds? Surely it's the canines doing the hunting, not the horse-straddlers. What should it really be called? 'Dog-bothering'? 'Doggery'? Something like that...
@@CheerfulPessimist686 Yeah dude, its all a bit mad! hahaha!
This is a fantastic breakdown. I'm prepping to run this as my first-ever scenario as Keeper and I wish I'd come here first thing. Your roadmap example is pure gold, thank you. Do you write CoC adventures, and where can I find them? Edit: Oh, you write for ASN! Hot damn, I've already been enjoying your work. You make great art! Thank you kindly!
Thank you for the kind words! Yes I work with ASN! Glad you have enjoyed the show. I have a link to my scenairos in the description if you fancy checking them out. Cheers, Graeme.
@@RPGNook Cheers! Found, will scrutinize. :-)
Thank you for this rundown. Especially the reference picture! Tonight we'll see how our motley crew manages to unwind the situation. My guess is I'll have to make them believe they forgot their dynamite as soon as I introduce Lester Goodmen into the scene.
Sounds like it'll be a blast, hahaha.
Thanks for this review, I know I'm late but it was a good watch and insightful review. I agree with your point on not ignoring rank. Yeah the Aliens universe is built upon abusive authority figures but also, it's a book about the military. If people don't want that then they shouldn't be playing a book about the military.
Amazing breakdown as always. I will be running the final for my group pretty soon. So far it's a delicious ride 🙌
Have fun!
Not actually watching this as I'm still holding out to one day be able to play this, but just popping by to say I'm glad these are back! They're super helpful for preparing a scenario.
Good to have you back!
Long live Randy...
Oh no... what happened to Randy??
@@RPGNook Something about catching a bad case of Sasquatch and a volatile chemical reaction between flame and trinitrotoluene.
@@cormacmacassery4702 Happens to the best of us...
Found your channel a couple of months back. I just got into CoC at the end of last year, so I'm happy you are posting again. I was afraid i found another Dead CoC channel 😅
I'm not dead yet! And even then... I'd still post.
A great video that really hit upon the problems we had with this case. I'll be recommending your videos as a prelude to running any future cases :)
Thank you! Thats great to hear.
Glad to have you back brother, best scenario breakdowns on RUclips
Thanks! Last year or so has been hellish, glad to see you stuck with the channel! It means a lot.
After a long hitaus, we are back. Let us know how you ran Pipeline!
Welcome back! I'm prepping Grave Robbers as we speak, and I'm really looking forward to running it!
@@BillPlaysCthulhu thanks for picking it up! That's great to hear.
Hell yea!
Great breakdown, and your recommendations to improve the scenario are fantastic. Your ideas make the scenario so much better, especially the suggested cliffhanger ending. Bravo.
Thanks for the video. I've watched a few of your scenario breakdowns and you highlight lots of the problems I've identified as well. I played this scenario as a player the other day and to me, it seemed that the zombie victim and the hitman was the most compelling thread to follow, not some band member who played the trumpet and had a gig at a funeral the next day. Going to the dead accountant's apartment and finding it a dead end was a let down, and then realising that the only other activity presented was going to a funeral of somebody the players don't know felt like being railroaded. Also this was the players first scenario and the keeper didn't provide a reason for the players to know each other or work together. I feel that the structure of the story and the motivations of the players could be improved a lot. Your idea of putting the players in jail beside the band, so they can learn more about the trumpet player is very clever. It paints the police as assholes and helps keep the story on track. Same with your suggestion of linking the players to the funeral, by making it the funeral of somebody they know, is very clever. Great suggestions. If I was the publisher of CoC, I'd want you to review the scenarios before publication.
Thanks! That means a lot. Hope you have fun playing CoC!
this is awesome stuff!
Key clues in the left corner are from another adventure
About 1/4 of the way through now, enjoying it a lot! Bought the oneshot and will be running it in a few days as my first ever game as Keeper! If you see this, thank you for the great resources!
Thanks man! Good luck with your game
Thanks for the video- great breakdown and suggestions for improving it.
Glad you enjoyed it! I really do like the old West setting
Desperately needs closed captioning so we know what the Hell the other fellow is saying, I cannot make out a single word he is saying, too bad I can't understand the audio.
The doors to darkness scenario breakdowns were just just messing around before really figuring out everything. These will be redone in time.
thanks, used some of your comments yesterday, for two of my players. They seem to enjoy it :). they had to persuade to get out of the island, failing to repair radio and failing to swim out of the island on the boat. Tension was slowly rising, so I am happy how it played out. They finished in the nearby village, eating breakfast, spoting one person in the pub, with wider eye sockets sitting nearby... Now what to get them into now? :)
Very helpful. TY! I don't understand why the players would know Reese is dead in the beginning briefing. I'm just going to show the AWOL's pictures and not info.
Way too Fast. Way too much stuff for 1 video.
Fortunately you can watch it, pause it, watch it again, slow it down, and skip around.
@@RPGNook - Unfortunately, that's bloackable advice. NEXT. [Blind Guy Thinks YOURE A DICK!] #YouHaveBoomerSensibilities #ZoomerStupid
My hatchlings wanted the gold AND the lighthouse keeper. To survive, my PCs wracked with guilt, handed the keeper to the deep ones.
Very traumatising! Definitely a good addition.
Funny how experiences can vary from group to group. I played this as my first CoC game ever. We had a small group and I took some time to let the investigators (funny enough) "investigate" prior to moving to the woods. Ofc, I also prepped the group for a horror/mystery section and tried to get the most out of music and ambience (using candles, for example). I made sure that they had some connection or ambition that could drive them to investigate, get the bounty but save the girl too (in our case, one of the characters was a close friend and the other was too ambitious to just get a bounty and move on). Our game lasted good 5 hours. They started by getting some info (the handouts) from the local newspaper archives (one of the investigators was a young journalist) and library (the other a librarian!). Then, they took some time to buy some equipment (including guns). I also used that time to set a NPC that would be accompanying them (tho, at first, I used him to poke the players into a 20s mindset, as he was a little "sexist" and they both were girls doing what many would say was a "man's job".) After getting them together as one of the rescue groups, we really had a blast. So many foreshadowing and suspicion. The dreams and encounters that eventually made most of their group disband. At the end, only the players and that NPC carried on. They came across all the horrors and the supposedly stronger NPC (who was a "hunter" looking to cash in) was saved by the librarian when they battle the crazy kidnapper. Finally, they decided to go all the way to save the girl and both the dad and kid that got captured. It was intense and we had fun. The NPC didn't make it, as a last action he blew the hole place up with himself. All the girls made back to town but really affected by the whole experience. I loved that when we began the sun was still up irl, and it was way into the evening when we finished, so that also contributed to the mood and setting. Both players loved the adventure and we are running Blackwater Creek. As for me, this adventure really got me into CoC. I'd just advice you to prep your players by both letting them know that it's a horror game (so they keep "outworldly" jokes out of it) and that it is a mystery game, thus they need to actively investigate the mystery. Otherwise, they are gonna just run away and it was going to awfully terrible! (that doesn't mean they just need to kill themselves, but that their character's need to "want" to take part to.) Great Review! Keep it up.
That is a crazy journey for everyone. Glad it all worked out
