@@KP_Uravity we've come a long way backwards, because back in the 2000s places where you could pay by the hour to play, like a LAN house/internet café were very common precisely because of what you said, then there was an economic boom where these places died down because people were able to buy their own games, now we're back at "too expensive" and it happened so fast... I bought my PS4 in 2019 for 700 reais used and now you can't find a decent one for less than 1400
The little sticky thing on the back of the screen is to stop the screen from touching and shorting stuff on the board I'm pretty sure. Aftermarket screens don't come with a backing so you have to make your own. 😂 I used electrical tape for the one I worked on. Additionally, I received an anomaly of a ds lite in a sendico junk lot. It had an aftermarket shell, but it's better quality than any aftermarket shell I've seen, but the shell is also worn, beat to hell, and dirty. It's got other strange things going on too like its triggers with no springs, and one solitary screw cover on the bottom. If you're interested in it I'd be happy to send it, no charge.

Its insane. I got a 2ds xl for $300 total, but it had a rare case listed online for $250 by itself.... I have a couple DSi's, DSi LL, and a basically broken DSi XL, and an original DS with a broken hinge but i wanna sell it cus its a rare skin (gray shell, green with black flame bumpers (definitely not decals as they sink into the ds units shell
I work at Goodwill and some of the original DS’s we’ve gotten have been in great shape. They still felt pretty solid so maybe some became more brittle than others?
I used to find lots of great retro game stuff at my local goodwill, but I think they hired an employee that likes games and now all game stuff has dried up. Have you ever seen employees taking all the great retro game stuff?

I just bought a used DSlite from half price books which is a book and video game thrift store in the US. The DS was in BAD condition and I had to order a new shell, touch screen, and d-pad. But nothing compares to this horrid thing 😂
I just got myself a new ds lite from dkoldies and it's in super good condition. It looks like no ones used it before. It was about 150 dollars and it's been so nice to use again. They also have cosmetically flawed options which brings the price down to like 110. Over priced? Probably, but it's worth it to get something that's been properly cleaned and tested
Bad mistake including the wrong charger, and that clicky shoulder button was horrendous. Definitely looked like the D-pad was too far into the shell and those contacts had clearly been replaced.
Do nottt blow into the cartridge pins, that will damage them due to spit... only take it out and insert it again...and clean it properly if necessicary.
That's the thing with AliExpress refurbish: they usually use aftermarket parts with awful quality, and they never clean anything inside. Actually, you were lucky the DS had came with the original battery. Chinese refurbishers normally use poor quality batteries, which doesn't last even an hour with energy. Or, even worse, the batteries start to drain itself even if you're not using the device!
All rechargeable batteries will drain even when the console is off, although batteries manufactured by a reputable company should have decent capacity and relatively minimal drain over time.

That's why I don't buy refurbished or any electronics off of EBAY. There's a lot of scammers who sell broken electronics, which they don't explain in their description of the item that they're selling. They even sell you knockoffs of game systems too, which is bad enough.
Amazing video. One part that I would have loved to see is you investigating the shoulder buttons in more detail - to find out why they sound so squeaky. Maybe the springs are aftermarket trash?

God I wish there was an actually good aftermarket shell for the OG DS phat. I always liked that more for the clicky buttons and flush GBA port, but everyone is obsessed with the DS Lite instead which has some of the worst feeling, mushy buttons I've ever used
Hey, man! It would be really cool to see more accessories being restored and modified for modded Gameboys. Specifically, I happened upon the urge to get my hands on an accessory for the GBA SP from Intec called the Stereo Soundz, which are attachable speakers for the SP that have a small footprint compared to others. Mine kind of pop and would like to see someone fix a set so that I can do it myself, as I've never seen other youtubers do it. As for the modding bit, well... a common SP mod today is the USB-C mod and maybe you'd find it a challenge to mod the thing since the accessory itself has stereo speakers and both male and female connectors. I'm looking forward to seeing a video with them, modded or not. A resration video would be enough, tbh. There aren't many accessory videos out there so I thought this would make a nice addition to that limited catalog.
My original DS hinge broke years ago before I got a original 3ds on launch day. The plastic on those were always a general issue, but loved a lot of the games on that system.

As someone who does my own refurbishments from ebay I'm baffled how they managed to get such a bad shell, honestly even the pure shells you find on Aliexpress (Before anyone calls me out, there are good parts sold there and I find most places you buy parts are reselling those exact same parts for a markup so why not go there directly?) are fine and typically better than the poorly aged original shells these days but how did they manage to do this poorly, especially for that price point because if you're sourcing an original DS and a new shell, you definitely can get some margin out of that. Something else I noticed but you didn't point out, the ribbon cable that connects the main board to the little daughter board that connects to the top screen and speakers looks like it's aftermarket as well, again aftermarket does not automatically mean bad but I definitely noticed as the one that was in there was completely black while the OEM ones are more of an amber color, I'm not sure if this is down to lighting in your studio or you didn't notice but with the quality of parts this seller I'd definitely feel a little skeptical of it.
To add on to all the other problems, something you missed (I guess because it was a EU charger so you couldn't use it anyways) the charger they provided was for a DS Lite, not an original DS (which uses the same charger as a GBA SP).
I joined the big boys club, got my first Venus 175 mechanical chronograph watch, from a company called Alpha 1993 and its the Paul Newman Rolex Daytona "panda" and is just exquisite... def recommend getting one, looks like a million pounds on the wrist. Also got another JDM exclusive Pulsar "Bilbao" a watch series born from Seiko trying to make a modular interchangable watch design where you have the strap and caseholder and you swap the movement "cells" in and out, I have both the Seiko 7T62 chrono and the Seiko VX42 types, the things look like no other watch out there, very futuristic design by Seiko.
The pwer led turning off after a second could be due to a bad shell replacement. Fun fact, it can also happen on bad ps vita shell replacements. Had to fix a botched shell swap a friend got, it was a pain figuring out what went wrong. In the end i still didnt know but i was fixed somehow. Werid quirks with handheld consoles i guess
10 or 12 years ago I bought a refurb DS Lite from Deal Extreme, I had a little bit of prejudice against it but a few years later with my original DS in pretty bad shape, the Chinese one took it's place and still is alive today and rocking. I might've been lucky though and mine might not even be "refurbished" at all, might just be an used one, the box that it came with is probably a reproduction though, despite trying to look as original as it can be.
I just replaced the lower screen for $9 in a used ds that I bought a few years ago for the stylus... now I have 2 ds phats.. And they both work fine lol. I guess I have one to play and one to charge for continual play lol Parts for these are fairly cheap.
I still have a silver DS like this from when I was a kid. Everything works except the R button. Don't really have the tool or motivation to open it and fix it, but I recently got myself a used blue one. So that ain't bad.
Hey Elliot. I know you're probably busy, what with the house and all, but I'm having a bit of an issue with Sendico where I get outbid automatically whenever I bid, no matter how much I bid. I was curious if you have ever encountered this and if you had some ways around it.
It's probably cause people use bots to bid. Like an app that automatically bids for you without having to do anything. That's why i gave up on biding for stuff on ebay and i just straight up buy it now cause that thing would happen to me where no matter how much i would bid it would say you been out bid or your bid does not exceed the highest bidder
I wonder if the crumbly DS was a result of the fact that the silver of the case is a painted finish? Painting plastic can sometimes lead to embrittlement of the plastic substrate. I have had this happen myself when using Krylon Fusion (a paint specifically designed to be used on plastic) on standard ABS plastic, which is what most game consoles, computers etc are made of. I used a light coat of the paint to freshen up the appearance of the front panel of a UPS after I refurbished it with new batteries. A couple of years later, I nudged the UPS with my foot while I was working at my desk, and I felt the plastic fascia crack. On further inspection, I found that I could break the plastic apart very easily with my fingers, just like the DS in this video. The UPS was one of several I salvaged when they were being discarded at my job, so I had a couple of others on hand that I had not painted. None of the others exhibited the same brittleness.
For me, I don't care what it looks like, especially for $60 as long as it's playable. As for the lines under the LCD, my PSP had something like that on the original screen brand new out of the box.

This isn't fake. It's a real DS in an aftermarket shell. It was refurbished poorly, but it's still a real DS.

And yet, i got a mint condition DS Lite from ebay for only 20€.
For me, I don't care what it looks like, especially for $60 as long as it's playable. As for the lines under the LCD, my PSP had something like that on the original screen brand new out of the box.

How sturdy is the hinge on a nintendo 2ds xl...? I just bought a "brand new" one from eBay but disappointed with how cheap it feels.. and the hinge is very loose. Is it suppose to be that way?
Besides the shell being fake, the DS is the Handheld that hasn't aged very well. Especially the Shell/Hinges are very mediocre.
