I personally don’t think it’s dead. It’s one of those games where I always find myself coming back and starting a new play through every couple months. This game will live on forever in my heart
I’ve been playing the game that way for the last 7 years, it’s the longest game I consistently come back to

It’s my favourite game of all time. I’ve been gaming since the Commodore 64 days. I knew within 2 hours it was going to be epic. I’ve never felt terror & wonder like it. I want subnautica 2 to be fully mod-able and fully multi player. Oh and giant with deeper and darker layers of ocean and also a giant cave network on the sea floor too - water logged of course with about 60% of it fully underwater with large pockets of air and places that have no water due to strange tricks of elevation.

I screamed “No way!” as soon as I saw that title, Subnautica is one of, if not THE best Aquatic Adventure/Terror Game of this time, Sure it’s not widely talked about, but it has real passion and love going for it, always excited for what’s to come in its future!

I’d go back to subnautica any time I want honestly, the main thing is I’d only really go back to the first game over the sequel
yeah, below zero was such a massive disappointment.
only time i've regretted buying an early access game, cuz i got the first game in early access and fucking love it. Got like 250 hours on it.
I feel like it’s time for add-on DLC Packs. Maybe Unknown Worlds could outsource the development to dedicated modding groups and split the profit from sales. Maybe having fan-made official addons similar in scale to Return of the Ancients would bring new life to it. And if it’s DLC, it can theoretically be incorporated into the Console versions too, without the need for mod managers or the like.

@@colepikmin5741 as much as I’d like that too, employing anyone for anything costs money, and that cash needs to come from somewhere. Unknown Worlds would probably need to see a net income from this project for it to be deemed a worthwhile investment to be made on an older game. Unless you want either micro transactions in the game, or want to watch ads constantly, paying upfront for this big of an expansion would be the only feasible way to see this idea come to fruition.
There’s more details to get into about why an officially released expansion DLC designed by the modding community would probably not be free, but I don’t really want to dive in too deep.
Maybe they could port it to the unreal 5 engine? Or definitively do it before subnautica 2 comes out to get lots of, people onboard. I kinda wish a giant studio would buy them to give them unlimited funds to churn out stuff.
@@T1tusCr0w and with a giant studio buying them, comes corruption of products through corporate greed. As it stands right now, Unknown worlds, can do whatever they wish with their franchises without a higher corporation telling them what to do. These changes made by the corporation will often, if not always be purely in the pursuit of profit or gain for said corporation. If they were to be bought out, then if this corporation decides that unknown worlds has to say, make subnautica two have no submersibles or leviathans for some reason. Then that’s what would happen.
This is what happened with Minecraft, and why Mojang added the stupid chat report feature despite so much pushback from practically the entire community. Despite the fact it can be easily abused by trolls and malicious players. Microsoft doesn’t care. They just want to sell more copies by making it ‘child friendly’.
Banjo Kazooie was ruined by Microsoft too. Spyro by Activision. It’s likely to be the same case here. Your suggestion implies you don’t really understand the colossal problems that being bought out causes for most games. It means more money, but purely to do what makes the higher ups happy, not the players.
I personally hope they don't make a dlc. I belive that It is better for them to just concentrate on subnautica 3. I have seen a lot of devs who create dlc and just start pumping them out and continually milking their game.
Subnautica popularity is going to explode when Return of the Ancients gets released. It's gonna be huge! I can't wait to do an ultimate playthrough with ROTA, De-Extinction, Field creator studios and the Bloop mod all at once. It's gonna be epic...
I don’t think explode is the right word but it will regain some of its old viewers, but I don’t think it will explode on trending, maybe just a spike in interest for people who have seen the game before

No matter how many years have past, Subnautica will always be my favourite game out there. The amount of fear that struct me first encountering the Reefback, Leviathans, and going to the Void is something i wish i could go back to feel again. The amount of adrenaline over a survival-horror sea game i got from Subnautica was INTENSE.
At any time of day i would love to replay subnautica for the first time again
I think that the forest has also gained alot of popularity because of the Sequel, Sons of the forest has had a lot of news come out about it recently
I think the main reason The Forest is so popular nowadays is that the second game is coming out and people are just trying to replay the Forest before the sequel comes out in a month
The internet always assumes something is dead if an update doesn't come out every nano second.
Literally bought this game a few days ago, same with my whole friend group. We all played it nonstop through a snowstorm, all screen sharing in a discord call (like 5 of us at some times) and being absolutely terrified together. We had the most fun playing that single player game than any other multiplayer game yet. I’ve just now started hosting a nitrox server and (despite the instability) are having infinite amounts of fun together.
So to answer, no. I don’t think the game is dead as long as new players like us are discovering this absolute gem.

Multiplayer in subnautica is what would make me play daily with friends, alone is a bit meh after you complete it, I know there's some mods but not the same (mostly cuz I couldn't make them work lol)
They said the scale of the next game would "make them rethink" multiplayer
I can't mod any ways so I love DLC's and, I quite enjoy Subnautica & Subnautica Below Zero so I am hoping for a DLC with the return of the ancients left in mind and the same thing for a Below Zero DLC.

i personally don't think its dead as the devs seem really caring about the community and game so in my opinion i think the devs are working hard on another hit in the subnautica series or in the subnautica universe (like natural selection sequel)
Subnautica is one of my favorite games. I don't consider myself a big Gamer, but I play it a lot. I really like both parts. Every time I play it again, it captivates and enchants me. So far I've only played story mode, but I can't get bored of any of them. I haven't found one that I want so much, maybe The Long Dark will hit its level (it's also never boring).
in short, I can only recommend it, even to beginners like me. (sorry for my english)

I love how he's just holding the "fish" (i don't know what it's called in the English version) in the Intro.
The replay value of Subnautica is insane and that's before even considering mods.
The games aren't the same but splatoon would be a good example of massive games that "die" between games

The issue is that once you complete the game there's no need to come back to it. Unlike something like Minecraft where you can complete the game and there's lots more to do, especially on multi-player.
Completely agree. I think both Subnautica games have a lack of things you can do after a certain amount of playtime. YOu can make a base in every biome and also scan everything, but that really isn't too interesting.

I personally think that the 2.0 update was quite underwhelming in terms of what was expected to be fixed, while the content additions from below zero were definitely a brilliant idea, the more bothersome bugs that were fixed seemed too little and the fact that some bugs were brought in with the update.
I can see why people played the update and perhaps left it because it may not have been what they had expected, but I'm more on the "bugs are the issue" arguemnt that I've been seeing on discussions. Here's hoping that one day a lot of the obvious bugs in the game are fixed and people can have a smoother experience.
yeah but one thing that they could do that would make the game really boost in popularity is adding multiplayer. i know it would take awhile but still that would be awsome
I just got subnautica, I don’t think it’s dead! They literally just updated the first game in December and the developers have said they are working on the next subnautica game

The game is definitely not dead we have some huge mods in the making from the manta submarine to the atlas sub, along with the return of the ancients, once those mods come out you will most likely see an incline in subnautica related content.
Well I think it will be famous against this year with the new subnautica game coming but it will die again after but as long as subnautica's small community still exists I'll personally still find a spot for the game in my heart no matter what cuz It made my childhood

Looking at the old time capsule website there's like 15-30 or more capsules being released every hour or so. Some could be creative but I'm sure most are survival worlds since I don't see why people would just create creative worlds to continuously release capsules. I don't think Subnautica is dead
it's only natural, as you said yourself, for a game to dip in average players, when no new content is released, including mods. but i don't think subnautica will ever "die" since it, again as you said, has a lot of replay value, i just started a hardcore run, trying to do everything, meaning all things scanable, scanned, all seeds obtaineble, collected, and planted, and all creatures containeble, contained. a huge goal, and i know this will keep me playing for a good time, let's just hope i don't get surprised by a leviathan outside of a vehicle, or the likes
Subnautica is definitely not dead, I assume once subnautica 2 gets formally announced the game will pick back up in popularity

i hate this modern notion that stuff has to go on forever. Sometimes, it's better to just be a one & done sort of deal - and narrative games are exactly like that.
sure, you can add onto the story with sequels and whatnot - but even a single self-contained entry is fine.

Personally i think this has a similar motif to what happened to minecraft back in 2016-2018. It created a period of lull and quiet cause the people have grew over the property. However that doesn't mean they no longer love it anymore. It still holds a special place in our hearts and all it needs is a spark to light up the flame of renewed interest from new people and old.
well i think one of the main reasons why the Forest is gaining players again is that a Sequel Sons of the Forest is releasing soon

This is why Unknown World NEEDS to add multi-player to Subnautica 3. Don't know why they've been so multi-player phobic for the last couple of years.
Could be due to the bugs that come with multi-player games or the mess that comes with making one.
To inexperienced devs, making multiplayer games can be tricky. However I I think it’s more likely due to the bugs that come with multiplayer games.

I'd argue it's kinda pointless to think about. Subnautica is a fully launched single player game. Even if it ends up "dead", it's not going anywhere. It's like pondering whether or not Super Mario Bros. for the NES is dead. Someone, somewhere is probably playing it.
More important thing to consider, new mods are still coming out, so that's neat.

Tbh subnautica is a 1 and done game for most people you play it once it's a 9.5/10 experience but once you know everything about the game its hard to make that epic feeling come back subnautica is amazing on the first playthrough especially when you have no clue what your doing and your freind watching goes 'go to the ship ahaha' the point I'm getting to is subnautica was never actually alive its a game that thrives off the first playthrough so no subnautica isnt dead simply too many people have already heard of what it is and either played it or watched too much of it lowering the epic impact of your first hostile leviathan encounter
Definitely a big decline, but not dead. Its been pretty lackluster since May 2021, with only the sea truck docking station added and the BZ items added to the first game and with no Subnautica 3 game guaranteed to come out before 2025.
Oh for the AI thing personally I know a lot of people just avoiding anything to do with AI entirely because of the issues with AI becoming a replacement for paying artists or writers for their work and labor
