She received a special Tony award for her stage show. She was the first performer to have a concert on pay TV on HBO around 1976.
Love Bette Midler! Her shows in the 70s were extravagant and legendary, from what I understand, but Madonna's theatricality and staging changed the way concerts were performed from then on out. It became a thing for performers in a way that Midler's did not. Still, Midler is awesome and deserves the highest accolades!

Her sets and lighting obviously we're not as sophisticated when she started doing it in the 7O's but she did develop in that area. In her 1975 your, the curtain rose slowly to reveal her lying in th hand of a 3 story high animatronic purple King Kong. Kong . In her more recent Las Vegas shows in and in her final tour, she arrived on stage in the middle of a hurricane. In one tour, the entire stage was set as Coney Island, and she arrived on a floating carousel horse onto the stage. . She always had different settings and props that changed. Don't get me wrong, I love Madonna, and I think Blonde Ambition is my favorite concert of hers. But I believe that any artist looks back to their predecessors and artists for ideas and inspiration and either updates them or uses them as inspiration. Madonna draws inspiration from many performers who she admired like Marilyn Monroe, Donna Summer, Marlene Dietrich. To me, her concerts were before her time because no other performer put on shows with those elements. They just stood on the stage and sang. Anyway, I respect both of them for the shows that they do but I think every performer gets inspiration from those that came before. Also, I think every performer, including Madonna, knew that they had to go big because of Michael Jackson's shows. Michael Jackson's shows andJanet Jackson's shows were very elaborate. I think the three of them told other performers they needed up their game. But certain performers I just want them to sit in front of a microphone and sing. That can be a wonderful experience as well.

I saw the Confessions Tour live at the Wembley Arena and was blown away with the opening. The room rocked I mean actually shook throughout the whole show. During Hung Up my glasses on my face were moving with the bass being pumped out the speakers! ❤️

This was the first time where a concert was theatrical instead of just singing and dancing, which became the template for all of Madonna’s future tours as well as for most artists. Also to fully appreciate this performance, you do need to see the video first. In terms of tour opening songs, do Future Lovers from Confessions Tour. If there was one tour opening number that replaced Express Yourself as the best opener, it was Future Lovers.

Can you imagine the muscle control and the fitness level to be able to sing and dance at the same time. The backup singers, famous on their own for being Madonna's backup singers, did a really good job too. This is the most epic tour ever.
The set is based on a classic dystopian film called Metropolis which was Directed by Fritz Lang in 1927. The whole style of it is classic and film students all study it. She modeled the set after the style of that film. It's all like an art deco factory with laborers, and yes there are huge gears turning on stage.
Which all showed up in the Express Yourself video first(as far as Madonna history goes)... directed by David Fincher, and was considered one of the most expensive videos ever made at the time.

I saw this concert live at Wembley Stadium in London. I was 16 years old and it was the first live show I’d ever seen. Breath taking. The days before everybody had phones, everyone was in the moment. You didn’t get that now at live shows. Truly one of the most iconic tours there ever was. She changed the way people do live tours with this. She was at the top of her game here. Nobody matched her. The music world had a lot to thank for Madonna. She paved the way for so many. She pushed people’s buttons and made people think. There really will be nobody like her again. Madonna was very big for her talents of singing and dancing and making the performance show stopping while most american artist now kinda give lack luster performances.
