Originally Madonna was given a record deal for just 3 singles. She was an unknown artist - Singles “Everybody”, “Burning Up” and “Physical Attraction” which did well in the clubs. Based on the club success of those songs she was commissioned for a complete album. The 3 singles off the complete album were Holiday, Borderline and Lucky Star which broke the Hot 100, with the final 2 singles breaking the top 10. At this point she was blowing up. Her rise was very organic with little push or financial backing from the record company. I’m a huge Madonna fan from day 1 and looking forward to your journey. I was a pretty big fan of JJ in the 80s and early 90s, seen her LIVE, but I did fall off over the years unlike Madonna who I follow every move through the current day.
The fact that Borderline didn't immediately Grab you, is a testament to how good it is - - it doesn't give everything away immediately. The more you hear it, the more you like it. That's why it was the Biggest Hit off the Album (in the U.S.). Although 'Holiday' was the Biggest Hit, Worldwide. And agreed, Holiday is definitely a better song. It's a Standard. A Classic forever! Borderline also had a Great Video, where Madonna wasn't just Dancing & Singing - - but she was Acting out a story. That helped give it Legs.
Holiday was my first exposure to Madonna when I saw her perform it on a show called American Bandstand. The one where the host asked her future plans and she cheekily replied "to rule the world." I've been hooked for 40 years. Borderline probably owed at least some its chart success to its video, establishing Madonna as an early master of the art form, with its relatable storyline and her trendsetting personal style.
When "Everybody" was released, people thought Madonna was black because of its urban, street, RnB funk sound. They were SHOCKED to discover she was white.
This album was a sleeper hit, selling 10 million copies. She blew up the following year. Her next 2 albums sold 22 and 25 million copies. She had 8 years of unrelenting world domination: 1984-1991. And continues to break records, performing the biggest solo concert by an artist, this year in Rio, with 1.6 million people attending ONE concert.
The songs are long because they are meant for the clubs. Shorter versions are on her 1991 compilation album Immaculate Collection. Personally i prefer the longer versions because they allow the songs to breathe. I love every moment of Physical Attraction. It's a fan favourite. When you are dancing close to someone in a club to a sexy song, you want it to last as long as possible. not be over in 2 minutes.
I'm a die-hard Janet fan ... Janet is pop perfection..But Madonna has a raw edge and transforms . I remember when the Janet. album came out I couldn't believe that was her. Everything was totally different from the R.N Era except for LWND. It felt like it was apart of her life experiences, and it sounded like Janet. Madonna literally REINVENTS. By the time you get to True Blue ....her 3rd album.... you'll think your listening and seeing a difference person. The only advantage Madonna has over Janet is that her catalog is huge.
Listening to her album/singles versions is the first step in doing a Madonna journey. But her official music videos and live concert tour performances of her hit songs (like Borderline), elevate her music and artistry to a different level. She is after all best appreciated as an amazing performance/visual artist. She is credited for lifting the music video to an art form, she is a master of the craft. Her 1990 Blond Ambition world tour (her 3rd of 14 tours in a span of 40 years) is credited as the groundbreaking standard for all extravaganza pop music concerts that came after since. It’s the original pop music concert that brought together all the artistic elements of: state-of-the-art staging, high tech audio/visual, choreo, fashion/costumes, multi genre pop music, multimedia back screen images, and relevant, thought-provoking socio-political messaging. Appreciate you keeping an open mind and for covering Madonna.😊
Madonna The Queen of Pop No.1 singles as of Sep 2024 13 UK (record) 8 Ireland 4 Germany 10 Switzerland (record) 11 Australia (record) 25 Canada (record) 21 Spain (record) 3 France 23 Italy (record) 12 USA 22 United world chart (record) 17 Euro hot 100 (record) Highest grossing tour $411 million (15 year record) Instagram followers - 19.8 million Spotify 40 million monthly listeners 400 million+ records sold (Guinness record) Most attended concert by a solo artist 1.6 million +. 2024 The solo act with the most charted number ones singles worldwide. You’ll have a great ride! Enjoy!
big Madonna fan here, as well as Janet too. I've seen them both in concert. one thing to remember about music pre current is that the songs tended to be longer. so this will be a big complaint for you listening to anything older. back in the day we liked to sit in the groove and feel the rhythm so they tended to be longer songs. and they followed mostly a verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge chorus, ad lib till end .lol . I blame American idol and those type of live show that cut songs short. it made everyone accept a songs performance of a minute and a half. its kind of sad in a way. excited to follow along if you are going to do her entire discography.
Plus, back then we didn’t have the internet to distract us with short clips like vine, RUclips, TikTok ect..ect.., plus, many were designed to keep you on the dance floor in clubs.
The next album is Like a Virgin. She also had 3 big hit soundtrack singles not on the album at that time: Into the Groove, Crazy For You, and Gambler. So listening to them alongside the Like A Virgin album will cover that "era".
The version of Holiday you played is from streaming and it’s not the original version hence the lost lyrics. Yes, it charted at only 16. Her first crossover hit from the dance charts. THIS is how you know pop music before and after MADONNA. She fought long and hard for dance music to be taken seriously and a viable respected form of music. Hence opening a door Miss Jackson if you’re Nasty.
I agree the album cuts are long and boring to a new listener, I don’t mind it because I’m an OG stan. you’ll definitely enjoy the single versions which you can find on streaming platforms too🎉❤❤❤
M83 is a solid and impressive first album, but this is only the tiniest taste of what Madonna’s career becomes. My personal favourite tracks are Burning Up, Holiday, Lucky Star, Everybody and Think of Me. Because this was her first album, she was a complete unknown and completely different to what was charting by other artists. This is essentially a dance/post-disco album with funk and r&b elements, but what was popular was rock, singer-songwriter, heavy metal, new wave and country. When her first tracks came out, people thought she was black because of the sound and genre of the album, before they saw her videos. She released Everybody, Holiday and Burning Up and they did okay on the dance charts, but it was Borderline and Lucky Star that came out after that brought her more mainstream attention. She had actually recorded her second album and they had to delay the release of it because the first album started to become a big hit, and the older songs got rediscovered. Then in Dec 84 she released Like a Virgin and her career hit mega stardom and she became a worldwide sensation.
Holiday is originally 6 minutes long. I dont know why on Streaming they put the Immaculate Collection version, which is shorter and not as interesting. Its on youtube if you wanna hear it. You can find it on her Celebration greatest hits album.
Expect your channel to blow up if you do a Madonna deep dive journey. At 400+ million record sales, she's the biggest selling female artist of all time, up there with The Beatles, Elvis, and Michael Jackson. For comparison, Taylor Swift is at 170 million.
I love Janet to death but I prefer Madonna’s debut album over Janet’s. Although I always consider Control her real debut album and in that case I prefer Control over Madonna’s debut album 😉

Songs were longer then because people used to like to dance. We bought the album or 12-inch single because we wanted the long version. If one liked a song and didn't want the long version there was the shortened, edited down 7-inch, 45rpm single version.
The very first cassette tape album I bought with my allowance money was Control. I loved Janet. Somehow Madonna slowly crept in with Like A Virgin. I had to buy her debut and Physical Attraction became a lot of gay boys theme song including mine. I don't hate you lol its just a generational thing I guess. Truly listening is the key. Fast forward and many Janet and Madonna concerts and albums later. Madnna is my favorite bwcause of whats shes achieved culturely, artisticlly and in business. That being said Janet will always be my first love. Pro tip when you listen/watch Madonna you'd need to put Janet aside otherwiswe you'll just be hater. I felt it.
Unlike today’s Music lovers, who’s attention span is no more than two minutes when this album was released. It was in the air of dance music and people wanted to hear along versions of this song and also these songs were created to hear in a dance club and also this music was created, not for headphones not trying to be condescending, but you should listen to this music without headphones and turn up the volume and think about the time that this record was released. Keep up the good work.
I was never a big fan of the album version of Borderline. The single/video version is the definitive version that has a better mix and tighter edit. Love that incarnation of it.
I wouldn't compare these two legends. I love how Madonna did it, her story - being almost broke moving to NYC as a teen in the 1970's on her own, not knowing anybody and after many hardships she finally broke through. Love it.
Baybeee I was wit u all the way till u was “bored” with borderline . Omg this is to me the standout on the album . I’m sorry boo boo but now I don’t trust U . And I’m new to U . I’m glad u like burnin up that kinda gave u redemption but BayBAY u need to get into borderline and quit playing . Lucky Star is Kunty for sure but Boarderline is that girl !
the time complaints is a symptom of your generation. attention span is zero. When mj, madonna were putting out vinyl singles in the 80's and 90's there was always a "12" mix that would go for 10 15 mins. theses were the versions dj's would play in the clubs. it so sad that kids today have the attention span of a gold fish.
Sweetie you got no business doing a Madonna Reaction video. Look at Videos of her. Missy you need to educate yourself on her watch the videos. shade shade shade
Reaction starts at 2:11!
Also, 2 clips had to be taken out from borderline due to copyright, sorry about that!

Same…. Great comment-Good to have the OG’s educating the kidz
Both Janet and Madonna released massive culture-changing albums the same year, 1989. Rhythm Nation and Like A Prayer.
The fact that Borderline didn't immediately Grab you, is a testament to how good it is - - it doesn't give everything away immediately. The more you hear it, the more you like it. Interesting I would've never known that!
Madonna's musical influences were Motown artists and David Bowie. It's evident in a lot of her work. @Agrassyhandle

This is one of the best debut albums ever and always makes those lists.
Janet Jackson and Madonna were my life for a good 20 years lol. I still love and keep up with both of them.
Enjoyed your reaction. Hoping to see a reaction to her second album, Like a Virgin.

correction: Madonna's Catalog is Much better than Janet's PERIODT. janet never evolved she did the same thing over and over. it;s a jackson signature.

MADONNA RULES ❤
I listen to this album at least once every week! And Borderline is my favorite song on it.
Idk why they put “The Immaculate Collection” version of Holiday on the Digital version of her First Album when the original is 6 minutes.
A travesty. Yes the original is on the 2009 Celebration compilation.
Streaming is to blame 😕
Great record that gets better with repeated listens.

This was a “dance record” made for the clubs .. hence the long running times 🙂🙂
Unlike today’s Music lovers, who’s attention span is no more than two minutes when this album was released. Album cuts run extra long. The radio singles were more concise.
This generation don't appreciate long tunes like my generation did
👋 Grass, check out the video of The Celebration Tour! Madonna's last tour. A lot of these songs are in the show🖤
I wouldnt compare the 2. Janet was 15 Madonna was 25. Huge difference, This one has a few good tracks tho. it gets better after this.
I'm going to subscribe to your channel I really hope you go through her discography 😊

Hope you listen to more Madonna!
It's okay to like the 80s :-)
You will love the everybody remix from the you can dance and you can dance edits album if you like it short n sweet 😂❤❤❤
You picked the album version with the longer versions of the songs. The regular version is better.
I like you but Im sad that you didnt like borderline and physical attraction
Please going into madonna journey carrer, she is an amazing artist
Maybe you consider watching her music videos ;)

Never liked borderline
Borderline is the least "Madonna" song on the album. The producer modeled it on "I never knew love like this before" from Stephanie Mills.
