      Thank-you, Rita! I love Martin County, and have really enjoyed filming there, the nice people I've met, not to mention the tenderloins. Hoping to get back this fall to complete the Shoals section of "Legend of the Lost Indian Silver Mine" and also do a few more tourist features. Many people have never heard of Shoals and have been delighted to learn about the hidden gems it offers, through this video: it hovers as either the #1 or #2 most popular Indiana videos I've ever posted to RUclips! It's been an honor and privilege, so glad people have gotten a lot out of it.

      Incredibly muddy. Local legend has it that mobsters in the 1930’s had a safe house on top of the hill, tunneled down to this cave, so they could escape to the river if they had to.
      I went back in there a decent piece. I later talked to a member of a caving grotto, and he pulled the map: nothing but mud, and it terminates at a dead end. You should have seen me at the pizza place afterward! What mud dried, I flaked off and went anyway. The deep dish pizza at Chicago’s Pizza is that good!

      Check out mustering elm park, when you’re out and about in Martin County! A guy and his wife recently cleaned out that mineral spring basin and it’s beautiful. If you have an achy ankle or foot, I hear soaking in the spring helps. Bring a lawn chair and a towel!

Some people hate that ramp, saying it takes away from the caves beauty and wild nature. It does. But it also lets many families experience a wild cave for the first time, and I think that’s awesome!

    Wonderful, when I was a teenager in the late 70's me and a buddy would drive down around that area, he knew where a few hard to get to caves were. I remember one was just a small hole covered with briers but once you wiggled in you went down a tube like tunnel and it opened up a little and then about a 8 foot drop. It went pretty far in until it opened up to a good sized room. Fun stuff back then.

      I have footage of a cave I found, over there at the Bluffs of Beaver Bend. It looked like a sliver of an opening, 20 feet off the ground. Well, I nearly fell trying to go up: mud under leaves. But I made it. I could feel that cool cave air and cave smell, got really excited! And then it terminated to a pinch at about 7 feet in. I don’t do pinches! 😀 There’s also a bored out tunnel a little further down that trail. Some say it was made my gangsters that were making an escape route to a house above. Others say it was treasure hunters, mining for who knows what? Hope to see that one this fall.

And I found so much more than even the internet provided. Amazing beauty. Much later, I was going through my parents old photos and found they’d been to Shoals in the 1950’s: that was very special to me. But what’s even more special, is I always meet nice people every time I go.

    Awesome. We are checking out Bluffs of beaver bend this week. Was "Indian Cave" in that conservancy as well?

    • @AdventureswithRoger
      @AdventureswithRoger  3 года назад

      The Indian Cave I showed was at the end of McBrides Bluff, not far from where the last houses are on the left, but before where the road turns. it is incredibly well hidden: you cannot see it from the road. I’ve been to it twice and end up climbing up at the gully, about 30 feet up, and walking across until I get lucky!
      However, At the Bluffs of Beaver Bend is a good sized bear cave, right across from the parking area, about 6 feet from the ground. Usually slippery wet and mossy, enter at your own risk! There’s also one about 12 feet above the ground, after that one, but I found it doesn’t go but 10 feet and terminates at a pinch.
      If you keep walking passed the Bluffs of Beaver Bend, that’s Nubbins Ridge, and you’ll find what’s been described as a miners tunnel: it’s not a natural cave. Folklore has it as a place where silver was mined, to a gangster tunnel that was cut to store illegal alcohol.

      Brian watson the place is peppered with caves. But, I was at the gas station casually talking about it and one guy spoke up pretty loudly, “there ain’t no caves here!” I can only guess he was a local guy that was sick of treasure hunters asking about the Indian cave legend. 😀 I’ve done extensive research on that legend and have concluded there was something there, but the Indians came back and got it, several good stories back it up. And the stories travel west.

    • @brianwatson3705

      @@AdventureswithRoger I've read on some treasure blogs about treasure being hidden in several places in Indiana. It is interesting to read about them. I'll have to visit Shoals once it starts warming up.

    • @AdventureswithRoger
      @AdventureswithRoger  5 лет назад

      Brian watson that cave I crawled through is a dead ender after a miserable way back. The low crawl to the right opens up into a dome but also goes to nowhere. My great grandmothers story closely coincides with the cave but everything that was ever in it is long gone.
      Bluffs of Beaver Bend supposedly has a cave that can be entered from someone’s basement and was a storage place for bootleggers. One legend says Charles Lindbergh’s baby was held there, but I think that’s a pretty tall story. If you go to Bedford that entire town is on top of a massive cave system and one part even serves their public drainage system! And one house really does have a basement that goes to a cave!
