The palms in this orchard are in their third seven year trimester of growth. They will be considered full grown and should reach their maximum production by the year 2024. They were planted in the summers of 2010 & 2011 from shoots that were born (started to form) from our original planting back in 2003. By the year 2024, these palms will be 21 years old.
Patience and fortitude has been my modo.

Hey Juan, good question. We do water in the furrows next to the trees most of the time. It just so happened that this video was taken when we were watering in the basins. Date palms have roots that reach and cover the entire basin between the palms, so I like to water the entire basin.

Very well laid out. But what's the minimum distance required between 2 palm trees? I'm sure you could've planted them closer. Also what about growing other plants in the spaces such as grape vines or Mango trees?

Hello Humble Servant, this is the real Sam Cobb typing this reply message to you. I am not an A.I. robot!
You are correct, I could have planted these palms closer together. But I have already done that before, and things did not turn out well. I have never recovered from the mistake of planting my first grouping of palms, two closely together. So learn from my mistake. I am speaking to you from experience. Date palms are selfish, and want to be fa apart; at least 30 feet apart to be happiest. My trees are spaced 30' x 30'. If you have the room, this is a good spacing. It makes it easy for tractors to get down between the trees as well.
If these trees were planted any closer, they would begin to shade each other later in life… After they have been in the ground, about 10 to 15 years! So planting grapevines or mangoes between these trees, would be a bad idea!
First of all, grapevines and mangoes require different amounts of water than date palms do. Secondly, grapevines and mangoes require different nutrition than date palms. And thirdly, grapevines and mangoes require their own amount of sunlight to thrive. If these crops were grown below the canopy of a date palm, they would never thrive. Because they would never receive the proper amount of sunlight needed for them to mature and produce quality fruit.
So this is why we only grow date palms. I will admit that early on in the first couple years after planting my first shoots, I used to grow watermelons in the space between the trees. That was fun, and OK for two or three years. Eventually, the watermelons got in the way of the dates or should I say the dates got in the way of the watermelons. And truthfully, watermelon's should only be grown in the same location once every 5 to 7 years. So it was really a one and done deal with the intercropping with watermelons, after rotating them to all of the spots they had never been planted previously.
Well, this is a long answer, but you asked a good question and so I gave you a good answer.
Put your trees far apart so that they will have proper sunlight and be able to absorb proper water and nutrients from a large area.
      I wish you well.
      Sincerely,
      Sam Cobb

I noticed you mentioned the trees were blooming. As u drove I also noticed what looked like covered clusters. Do these palms have different pollination times? Great video. TC

I like to try new things. I am tying a very late date harvest on some of these trees. Lol

🤔I will someday. But for now, I am conducting a lot of private research on matters such as this.
But I will give you one pointer: it is helpful to add some cow manure mixed with the soil around the palm shoot when planting.
      Good Luck!

Hello friend, this is the real Sam Cobb! ...I am not a robot! You are 100% correct, there are no dates on these trees. This video was taken just before the first of spring. Dates bloom in the spring, and are harvested in the fall. There are no dates on the tree just before it blooms. Normally.

great videos. I am curious, do you trim back the inner parts of the fronds for safer access to the flowers? hard to tell but doesn't look like there are any spikes or inner blades.

    • @samcobbfarms
      @samcobbfarms  2 года назад +1

Hey, Acending Wedgie, lol. Yes, we de-thorn our date palms to allow safe access into the center of the palm. We complete this task before the palms blooms each year. As you can imagine, it is a big job that absolutely has to be completed each year. At least each year that we will be fruiting a palm.
      I wish you well.

@@samcobbfarms Thank you! I can imagine it's a big task. I have a single canary date palm that is starting to be pretty large, bottom branches are at 7 feet... and the thorns are murdering me every time I even look at it. I have been considering dethorning part of it to make cleaning easier. we're not really worried about the fruit so much. I've also seen a squirrel get stabbed falling onto one of the thorns. so sharp! would love to see a video about your dethorning process. I'm guessing you use a sickle?
