- Today, I bring you guys a review on the Nikon Coolpix L840 Digital Camera! This is probably one of the best budget video and photography cameras out there, by coming to the market in 2015 as the newest in the Coolpix L8 line-up! The biggest downside to this camera is the ammount of time you need to spend learning the settings, and to customize them for the best pictures. +Malkoot Noor In the outdoors, it is really simple to operate and adjust settings, and pictures come out looking GREAT! The camera works best in daylight :)

How long do the battery's last for?
+The Real Buk Usually around 4-5 days of moderate use. If you're going for a photoshoot (especially in the cold) make sure to bring extra batteries!

+DanDogs I struggle with the audio problem myself and there's really no way to fix it except for use an external mic and link video and audio together :( But with a tripod, I just hold mine as steady as possible when filming. Sorry I can't help you on this :(

Great overview of this camera. I had been looking for some time for a good camera and comparing different ones when I stumbled onto the Coolpix L840. For what t has and what it does for $200.00 you can't beat it.
Your video explained a lot more the the Nikonese language in the microscopicly printed manual. I learned a lot from yoor video. I even learned how to NOT spell amount (ammount). :0) Thanks again.

+Matt Bradley Thank you! And no, I wish there was that feature, but the way I make timelapses is setting the recording settings to : 1080P, 25Fps, and keep all recording at the lowest setting to make the file size smaller. I hope this helps!

For the price its a tremendous camera, in good light conditions you can compete with 10 times more expensive cameras but then the light its not so good its goes down a bit. i been using one for the last 3 months and im happy, you just cant ask more on this price range.

I just bought this camera and yes, it is very difficult to focus using the optical zoom if you do not have a tripod.

Hat this as my first bigger camera 4 years, its ok for someone who want to learn motives and amateurs, but after 4 years I wanted to learn manuel photogtaphy and hot my first DSLR, the 2000d.. Its a good one... But when you are an completet beginner, the l840 is a good choice

+Trent Brady Yes! It has a large wide lens for up close shots and captures everything in the frame. You may need to edit the photos a little bit (brightness, saturation) before uploading them to eBay depending on your preferences. I actually use my L840 for eBay as well and it works great! This camera has strong macro with the wide lens, but for really detailed shots, it's not the best camera. But it gets the job done.
does it take square and rectangular photos/videos?
How do you transfer the pictures to a computer? Do you use the HDMI-USB cable or do you use the AV-USB cable?
There is an SD card slot on the camera. So you can transfer photos using the SD card or over the usb cable.

Sorry this is a noob question, but what does that adapter do? Is that "DC in port" or what ever it is a power supply source that you can plug into a socket or ?
+OCz4Life Thd DC in plug is to power the camera from a power source (Just some information- If you use a wall outlet, you can record from the DC in power source. If oyu use a power bank or anything else, it doesn't provide enough power to record, only when plugged into the wall. You can use the camera for pictures when it's plugged into anything)

No, the Motorola G 2nd Gen. I actually used the L840 for some of these shots of the boxes and accessories.
Mine keeps saying uncensored network or not connected to internet whenever I try to connect to my phone. which is frustrating. Does anyone know why?
Hi any advice on which is the best settings for taking picture with this camera.
Go into Auto Mode, and turn down the brightness a bit (-.3 , -.7). Then turn up the saturation 2 or 3 for brighter color pictures :)
do you need the eh-67 adapter in it as its recording or can you charge it up and unplug it ? oh and if you have to keep it plugged in as its recording, do you need the batteries in it ?
+Dominic Rosas You have to have the cord in at all times while recording or taking pictures. I'm pretty sure you need batteries in while using cord power.
Just wondering how do you save a video from the camera to your I phone or laptop? I'm having a lot of trouble trying to figure it out
If you want to save it to your phone, you need to download the Nikon WMU app, and turn on the camera's Wifi, and go from there. To move it on your computer, take out the SD Card, and plug it into the computer, then find your file.

hey man, great review thanks. I am thinking of buying this camera mainly to use on my trips to the mountain and beach. I have been taking pictures of butterflies, so it is important that my new camera has a good and fast focus response. I will also be taking birds' photos, would you recommend this camera for those two activities? I need to check any video with focus performance and quality review. Other than that....it will be used for landscapes.
Focus performance when shooting video is prettttty bad :/ When taking pictures from long distances (for birds), the focus sometimes gets confused on this camera. But at the same tike does ULTRA well with it's super zoom (855mm zoom if you didn't know :0). Butterflies would definitely be easy because this camera has a macro mode setting. Landscapes aren't that great with colors and details getting mashed together :(

Let me know if I got this right...when trying to focus birds from a distance the focus can get confused but when you zoom on them a lot the focus works great? is the focus quick enough for close objects? (help me take good pictures before a butterfly flies away)
(I just went outside and tried what you said XD) Yes, focusing (if you can lock on toyour target) is very fast. And the focus will get confused sometimes, just make sure that you lock on to the target quick by holding down the shutter halfway.

Yes, by changing the focus to "Manual" and using the navigation controls to select what you are trying to focus on. It doesn't work that well, and you can only use it for pictures, not video. Hope this helps!

Definitely go with the camera that has better control over how to take the picture (which in this case would be the SX410). One thing to keep in mind is that the SX410 only records 720p, and the L840 records 1080p for video. I can't decide for you, but consider things like this. L840: Tilt Screen, 1080P, Side Zoom button, Stereo Sound (Still not really good). SX410: 20MP vs 16MP on L840, more zoom, more control (shutter speed, aperature). If you need more help, please let me know!

+Charming' Can You can pause while recording! And no, it does not have timelapse setting. But I bought a large SD card and record in the same spot and edit it as a timelapse.

+Alonso Landaeta This camera isn't to solid as a video recorder (although it will get the job done). Depending on your budget, I would recommend something between the Panasonic HC-V270 Digital Camcorder , or the Panasonic HC-V770 HD Camcorder. I would recommend the higher priced one (AND PLS DON"T BUY THESE JUST BECAUSE I REFERED THEM!!). But take your time and watch reviews on which one you would want! Hope this helps!

In my opinion, I would go for a higher priced camera to get good low lighting (without noise). The L840 isn't that great at either of them, and I looked at the specs for the SX40, and I think it's more for easy general users. (Only my opinion) I would go for something a little higher priced. bloggaddict Yes, that is one of the cons of this camera. It falls out of focus alot mostly in video, but sometimes in pictures as well. My reccomendation, set your Autofocus to Single AF.
how do I do time lapse with the Nikon L840?
+Cat Lewis Unfortunately, you can't do a picture timelapse :( It takes up more memory, but I just recorded a long video in the lowest frame rate and got some nice time lapses out of that :)
