I saw that a long time ago. At first, I was stunned. But then I came up with a hypothesis about how Derren might have pulled that off. As I remember it, it wasn't just that he guessed what they subject had written on his paper, but that the guy didn't even remember that that was what he had written. The guy was, to the end, incredulous that "BMX bike" was what he had written on the paper. And this made me suspicious. He didn't even remember writing "BMX bike" on the paper. My guess is that Derren planted the word "baseball cap" into both of their heads with his explanation to the woman. Although the lab coat guy had his ears plugged, he could still hear enough, I'm sure.
So Derren's best trick was convincing people he could plant ideas that complicated. You can influence people to be more likely to think of something in particular in certain scenarios, but you can't convince them to guess things like "blue baseball cap." I have a ton of respect as this might be an example of the greatest misdirection I've ever seen. Consider this: he has never been shy about showing how he "planted" an idea, so why in this example and this example only does he get rid of the audio? He says it's so people won't figure out how to do this, and he's telling the truth. It's just not for the reason he implies. I can't think of *exactly* how he did this effect, but I find it lots of fun to try to think of ways to reproduce. Heck, he's one of the reasons I got into magic/mental magic because I realized he was veiling these techniques with psychology in the same way old mentalists veiled them with spirituality.
Derren Brown is a professional and has studied all this for many years. The lab coat is just to add to the effect for the television audience - not really a part of the trick. What we don't know is how many times the effect was filmed with different people or how many attempts were not very successful before this version.
Given the nature of this trick I'd bet he could make it work 100% of the time, but he definitely didn't get it through "planting thoughts" or cold reading. Something obscure, like it being any object this person owns, would require some kind of control where he could have this information before or during the routine.

You may be able to "reveal" that he owns a blue baseball cap, but not guess that that was what he was thinking about. There are other things not shown on screen at work here.
it's called cold reading. fortune tellers do it a lot. people with strong imagination(like writers) are better. if you try it on a friend you can do it too a 100% right
Why does letting him experience it first hand rob him of his objectivity? Objectivity is anti bias isn't it? Wouldn't experiencing it rob you of your bias? Because of your inability to deny the results of what you're experiencing?
I see your point, LongGameValue, but no. It's very difficult to be objective about your own experiences. Observing someone else's experience puts one in a much more objective position. In a situation like this, the reader (Derren Brown) can guide the interaction based on how the subject responds at each point along the way. So if the subject gives a facial twitch or a slight movement of the hand (which is resting on Derren's hand), Derren can "read" that, and direct the next question or suggestion accordingly. And all the while, the researcher, because they are also the subject, is spending part of their attention on thinking about the questions and suggestions from the reader, and on trying NOT to show a response. That doesn't leave a lot of attention left over for objective observation. Does that make sense?
That girl works with Derren. He guided the "scientist" to choose her when he said @ 3:00 ( take a look "up and down" and choose one ) ... while he was pointing at her for him. He forced him to ignore the rest on both sides and only choose the one he was pointing at. This is almost the same way used to force someone to choose a card, the classic force.
+Esha Ahmed +Hakan Guven He uses a mentalism technique called cold reading. It's where you ask a bunch of vague questions. Once you get a good response out of the person, you continue to probe further, continuing to ask vague questions. This is something that really anyone can do given enough practice.
It's more than any single tactic. Derren uses ALL of the tactics, from cold reading, to Neurolinguistic Programming, to diversion, to hypnosis, and so on.

Queen Beatrix was on the coin.
Surely someone has studied some of this stuff and can explain
Yeah, this is real...
How did he do it?
The camera man gave Darren a Q for the item. Maybe the way he led the camera , a hand position maybe...
Check 1:18. Mic goes in ear
"This guy is a scientist, look at his redundant lab coat..."
Think about it.... Everyone has one laying around. Amd darren does that all the time.
did he influence both of them to pick baseball hat?
And it's not 'spiritual' or 'gifted' either...but most don't have a clue how he does it, esp me
i wish i could figure it out too, i used to think he was using his third eye but that seems silly now
ajadrew how dude pls tel us
+Esha Ahmed +Hakan Guven He uses a mentalism technique called cold reading. It's where you ask a bunch of vague questions. Once you get a good response out of the person, you continue to probe further, continuing to ask vague questions. This is something that really anyone can do given enough practice.
HerebyOrdinary thanks so much I’ll look into cold reading more
It's more than any single tactic. Derren uses ALL of the tactics, from cold reading, to Neurolinguistic Programming, to diversion, to hypnosis, and so on.
I would call the first trick half finished
