  • Patient has been struggling with a lifetime of misophonia. Here she describes her experience and results of treatment at The Neurologic Wellness Institute. Misophonia is a disorder in which certain sounds trigger emotional or physiological responses that some might perceive as unreasonable given the circumstance. Those who have misophonia might describe it as when a sound “drives you crazy.” Their reactions can range from anger and annoyance to panic and the need to flee. You can read more at her blog: beyondthelanes...

Absolutely. Its so awful that a single sound can change your mood so much.
Dog barks is one of my triggers, and a couple of those can ruin my day.
I'm even not taking care of my ears (like high volume on earphones and stuff) because I think it wouldn't be so bad to become a bit deaf.

Misophonia has been such an issue for me. I have to cover my ears or walk out of a room when I hear smacking or chewing. (Literally feel RAGE) It used to be only this but now it's any sound effect: trickling water, someone drinking or pouring a drink, certain foods cooking. Not sure why more sounds are annoying. But it's seriously unbearable. I sleep with white noise, that definitely helps!

Tbh pot makes u focus on other stuff. Embrace the rage bud, I love to yell when people trigger it 🤣 I tell people not to take it seriously but when I’m yelling it’s Bc a panic attack. Ill twitch facial expressions right before I get a massive heatwave down my spine, gotta stand pacing and yelling - it feels really good, the relief it brings, no lie. If I got rid of misophonia, I’d miss the feeling of getting the rage out lol, I love itself, kinda addicted. I remember it starting around 7 too, I’m 30 now. If I get it out 1 or 2 times in a sitting then they make the noise again, the feeling doesn’t come back. Embrace it a little guys.

I'm 12 years old, and my parents might get me some therapy for my severe misophonia, I'm so glad that it helped you out, people who don't have misophoniaa just don't understand how distressing and enraging some common situations are. None of my friends have told me they have misophonia, none of my family members have misophonia, I don't have anyone to talk to and relate to about it, school is hell when people are chewing gum, popping gum, tapping, smacking lips, I recently had a minor panic attack from it, that's what brought its seriousness to my parents' attention. We might even be able to get my school to let me we earplugs in lesson. I Am looking forward to being able to do something about it. This video was brilliant. Thank you for opening my eyes.

Misophonia has ruined my life. No matter how much progress I make, all it takes is a coworker who chews with her mouth open or a neighbor whose dog repeatedly barks to make me revert to that primal state. The only solution is poking out my eardrums, but then I’d probably be driven crazy by vibrations. People who don’t suffer from this cannot relate. And our laws are not designed to take our need for quiet into account. If anything, lax nuisance laws have probably contributed to the problem. Every time someone drives buy pounding a heavy subwoofer I feel like I’m in a war zone. And every time I hear someone’s phone on speaker (which is everywhere) it’s like someone’s shoving needles in my brain.

Hey I feel you. At least know you’re not alone. 20% is not a small number of people. Unfortunately, society has given us zero power and we are at the mercy of others unless we resort to revenge tactics, which seem logical given there’s very little recourse and many people are too self-centered to even try and compromise, as in a situation with a neighbor.

@@duchesspodcast Thank you. Unfortunately 20% is not the actual percentage. It’s more like 3%. The 20% comes from surveys that include people who think they have misophonia because they’re annoyed by one or two common irritants like nails on a blackboard. This obscures the real pain and suffering that living with a constant fear of triggers produces.

Yell exactly what’s bugging you! Then I swear to god you’ll feel real relief when u sit back down and can breath again. If they go back to the noise after I’m almost always fine, it’s even funny sometimes. The Unabomber had all the symptoms of misophonia. He moved to Montana off-the-grid to escape trigger sounds but was still by the sound of overhead jets and his neighbors allowing the forest around to be cut down with loud equipment. He also repeatedly complained in prison about a noisy prisoner above him and the guards playing their radio outside his door. His grievances were ignored and he committed suicide. Misophonia is way more serious than the professionals are letting on. There are children on Reddit announcing their suicides. I have to wonder if those of us trying to bring attention to this disability are not on a government watchlist. They have to know that this thing is killing people. And society is only getting louder.

I have this with typing... and work in an office. Listening to other people type drives me insane. I literally sit at my desk blasting music in one ear and plugging the other. It makes getting things done nearly impossible. My employer will not authorize working from home full time (we're on a hybrid schedule and I am on a team with mostly remote workers).
I will say, one thing that helps, very, very slightly but it helps is if I make an effort to talk to the person next to me or around me before I start my day. It's almost like putting a person to the noise, very very slightly takes the edge off. unfortunately I cannot talk to everyone around me and don't get the chance to start the day talking to the people near me (coming in at different times, meetings etc) and once the noise is in my head, it doesn't matter if I talk to them or not. It's so hard to deal with this.

To me this is more of an obsession about noticing things (OCD related) than misophonia. The response would then be to try and notice it, expose yourself to the fear (because your brain is telling you NOT to notice it) then over time it retrains your brain to be bored of it again.

What kind of disorder is it if I cannot tolerate interruptions? Not just of sound but of things flying in front of me or moving by too. My brain can't filter them out. They cut the chord in my mind especially if I'm in the middle of a thought, and I can't recover from it without exerting effort to erase the sound or interruption from my brain. What is that called? I can't find it on google.

    • @teddmented
      @teddmented 3 года назад +4

There’s no agreed scientific criteria so a diagnosis is based on reaction to sound. A trained audiologist could help you with that, but if you get enraged by people lip smacking, chewing and breathing its most likely misophonia.

I suffer from what I know about myself. Only some people annoy me when they eat, while others don't. I live in the Balkans where people are healthy and strong. After hard physical work, for example working in the forest where you hand over 50 tons in one day, the feeling of misophonia disappears. The feeling of mythophony is strongest for me when I'm doing nothing. In general, when you don't do anything physically, you become nervous, you are dissatisfied, and misophonia further increases this. My advice, when you feel anger from misophonia, do heavy physical work.

With empathy you feel others pain and suffering almost willingly
Misophonia you are unintentionally having pain and suffering caused by other people.

I now have a sibilance trigger. The worst part is that my ‘triggers’ focus on my wife, which quite frankly, is cruel.
So, for example the S words she pronounces because of sibilance (which is no different from others) injects me with a flight/fight response because of the irrational stress/anger response to it. It’s like a surreal internal rage. I have to wear headphones a-lot!! It’s not ideal but thankfully she seems to love me enough to show some understanding! It just makes me feel like a weirdo so I try and overcompensate with hugs etc!!
I’m 42 & still scares me. Headphones combined with white noise helps to take the sharpness of the Sssssss
