    The Smithsonian Folkways Recordings project you are referring to is called: Just Around The Bend: Survival and Revival in Southern Banjo Styles. Mike Seeger’s Final Documentary.
    It will be an oversized package with two audio CDs and one DVD entitled Just Around The Bend: Survival and Revival in Southern Banjo Styles. Mike Seeger’s Final Documentary. On the DVD is a video-produced by Yasha Aginsky-featuring Mike in the field, recording and interviewing the artists. The documentary relates closely to the two CDs that accompany it and features most of the artists heard on them. The package also will include a a 6”x 9” 80-page booklet with photos and extensive notes.
    We have heard from many people that they are excitedly awaiting the release of Just Around the Bend. It has taken time for us to clear the rights for the songs performed in the film, but we are very close to completing that process. We are hopeful Just Around the Bend will be released in the spring of 2019.
    Thank you again for your interest in Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.
    Sincerely,

      Clifton, it's wonderful you are impassioned about this, and I add my voice to yours urging people to contact Smithsonian Folkways. It's distressing to me, as well, that Mike's project hasn't come out. I'm afraid I've slowed way down in pressing for it. Maybe this initiative will help! I'm glad to see SF again confirm their commitment to the project and give a target date (just about 10 years after the second recording trip we made, in 2009...). Production manager Mary Monseur is a big fan of Mike's, and I know she personally wants to see this through.
      As SF says, Mike's project is called "Just Around the Bend" -- not "Banjo Tales" -- & it consists of 2 CDs and a DVD along with a fat booklet. SF has had the material in hand for years now, along with some small supplementary funds I raised to support its release. I think you're right that SF has gone through some big changes in that time, & they're doubtless under greater market pressures than in earlier times.
      "Banjo Tales" is Yasha Aginsky's own film using the material he shot for Mike's project, edited differently & including fewer musicians. The Berkeley Old-Time Music Festival is the venue where it was shown. It's a really nice film, but it's not part of Mike's project. I believe whoever puts it out, whether SF or other, would need to get releases from the artists, though that's a legal question & I may be wrong.

    Clifton, I first developed my passion for folk music when I was 7 y.o. (a long time ago.) Moe Asche has always been one of my heroes, along with Joel Sweeney, Woody Guthry, Ralph Rinzler, Doc Watson, Mike Seeger and the NLC Ramblers. I love all of your postings, and you can be assured I will call Smithsonian/Folkways this coming Monday to inquire. Watching you on RUclips has been a joy and a privilege. Usually, if I hear song, I can reproduce it on guitar and banjo. Thanks for everything you have done, my friend!

    YES!!!! In a day and age when we are quickly losing our American heritage due to many different factors it is so important that we get out this vital resource! If for no other reason than to help out our good pal Clifton who gives so much of himself and shares so much of his knowledge that we as a community of pickers, enthusiast, and historians may further out craft. He is so genuine and obviously it’s not about the money for him, but the love of music, state, and country!!! So let’s all do this for Clifton as a huge thank you! It’s a gift that will continue to give down through the years. Get on the phone, start emailing, snail mailing your Congressmen/women, and Senators demanding they give us what belongs to us the populous, the peoples art! Start smaller if need be with the state legislature or even city council people, mayors. Just whatever you can. Failure is better than inaction because that means at least you tried. I know this video is a couple years old but I still felt compelled to give this little rant and last but certainly not least a HUUUUUGE Thank You to Mr. Clifton Hicks. Oh and also thank you for your military service!!!
    P.S. Lifes a garden, Dig it!!
    P.P.S. Lifes a banjo, just roll with it!!!

    Hey Clifton. From here in the good old U of K, we would also love to see this. I've been following and watching you develop for about 5ish years and have taken 90% of my inspiration from you regarding playing banjo. My dad was from Chicago and left me his banjos along with so many stories and music! I love Smithsonian and the Lomax legacy etc and anything that accurately documents American folk/old-time stuff.i feel it's in my roots even over the pond. So just know that that passion and desire to experience the authenticity of the modern masters of this genre is over here too. I will certainly send an email (proof read) to Smithsonian for what it's worth 😊

      Clifton Hicks. He left me an 1887 Lyon & Healy which plays great and has THAT sound 😀 and a beautifully crafted Framus (German built) banjo from the 60s/70s, which I hadn't noticed has one of the inlays wrongly placed on the 9th fret! So knowing him he probably made a deal on that one. He also left me an autoharp which my sister makes NO use of haha.

    • @CliftonHicksbanjo
      @CliftonHicksbanjo  6 лет назад

      Cool. I used to have a beautiful Lyon & Healy that had an odd aftermarket inlay job (very simple and pretty) all up the neck. FYI Lyon & Healy's factory was actually IN Chicago, in case you might not be aware.

    • @morganacres9360
      @morganacres9360 6 лет назад

      Clifton Hicks yea I found that out actually after digging up info online about it. I have family there so really should go. But I plan to take some time when I have the funds to travel around Appalachia where the music's more abundant I guess. The Lyon and Healy I have was a sort of "buck banjo" ithink they called them and possibly a mail order. So I guess the mountain folk who couldn't afford a more expensive banjo would get these if they didn't make them. I like to think it has an authentic sound because of this, but no fancy inlay. Also when I have a bit of disposable income I'd like to get one of your handmade mountain banjers 😀

      Smithsonian Folkways continues to show _zero_ interest in this project. The moment Mike Seeger was laid in the clay they all but abandoned it for a decade, and now that it's finally out, they refuse to promote it. If one looks through their website & social media pages there's barely any mention. "Just Around the Bend" is one of the few albums in their newer inventory that bothers to acknowledge _real_ traditional banjo music (i.e. not the commercial "folk" music of New York and DC). Perhaps it should come as no surprise that Folkways does everything in their power to bury it, conceal it, and pretend it doesn't exist.

    I just watched this video for the first time this morning. Another email has been sent to Smithsonian Folkways.
    I wonder how long it took them to produce and release of "The Social Power of Music"... And I guess they didn't have any "licensing Problems" with "Que Viva La Musica Latina"...
    "The Smithsonian Folkways is there to record the peoples music and bring it to them"
    I doubt it. That's their stated intent, but with the UC-B and the Federal Government involved it's obviously become another political tool.
    It looks like with the response from them they are going to see this project through. I'll believe it when I see it.
    Good job for bringing this to light.

    I sent them an email awhile back but no word back yet. I know it went thru. I think they are going more for synthesizer folk music to try to appeal to youngsters. They butchered Anna & Elizabeths new album. Great songs buried under a heavy droning out of tune synth. Sad. Anyways if we keep a-knocking maybe eventually they`ll hear us.

      I hadn't heard that, Dan. I had the pleasure of briefly meeting Elizabeth and Anna at, I think, the Clifftop festival years and years ago. I like them, their music and their visual art very much. I saw them do what must have been one of their first performances with the little cranked "slideshow" contraption that showed beautiful images on quilted cloth that accompanied the ballad they sang as they cranked it. Lovely.

    • @DanDDirges
      @DanDDirges 6 лет назад

      I like them too. I have all their albums. The previous records were just guitar, banjo and singing mostly. The new one is taking some getting used to because of the very over powering synth sound. But most of the songs are great. Their live performances here on youtube are excellent. Much better than the versions on their new album in my opinion. Yes the cranky thing they do is cute. That used to be popular in the late 1800`s and early 1900`s up until movies and television came around.

That film is actually Yasha Aginsky's personal cut that focuses more on family and cultural issues rather Seeger's cut where he was more strictly focused on contemporary banjo technique. Seeger's "Banjo Tales" that is sitting on the shelf at Smithsonian Folkways is a much longer, larger project that includes a CD+DVD set featuring MANY more banjo players and much more technical talk etc.
