Well I just tried this recipe, I did substitute activated charcoal in place of the zinc and I didn't have any Castro oil so I omitted it. I also put in a bit of vitamin e oil. I ended up using lavender and lemon grass as a scent but I don't love it. Next time I will use something that goes better with the cocoa butter as it has quite the scent on it's own. I haven't tried to turn up the tube yet to try this out but I did take some I spilled and give that a try. In other than not loving the scent it is wonderful. Thank you for the video. Also I times the batch by 5 and got 6 1/2 tubes. Revised, I have now been using this deodorant for 4 months and I love it! Everyone want some so I'm going to make it for sale. This is the best deodorant recipe I have found so far.
Hey Mayfly! I LOVED this video! So nice of you to share your wisdom with us like this. I'm looking for a side hustle I can start at home and thought that natural deodorant could be the perfect thing. I'm worried about selling homemade deodorant online though, is it legal?
You could use some baking soda, but I'd recommend only a few grams and top up the balance with more Kaolin clay. (2 g baking soda with 3 g Kaolin for total of 5 g instead of zinc oxide.)
Wish I had seen this advice before making. Didn't have the zinc oxide so I substituted with baking soda. And used bentonite clay as I didn't have kaolin clay. It turned out okay, but I don't care for the wet, sticky feeling. What advice can you give to make it less sticky? Thanks in advance!
Great video. I tried this recipe. It had a strong chocolate smell due to the cocoa butter. By any chance do you have the recipe in % I would like to make a larger quantity. thanks
How does the zinc oxide behave on the skin? I think it would show up white. Please advise. I've used zinc oxide sun screen, and it stays white on my face.
I love the Lulu Organics shampoo powder, but it is ridiculously expensive. I want to make it on my own now. (Prices these days!) Now I'm wondering if I do your recipe here, but without any oils & butters, just the dry ingredients, would this make a good shampoo powder? The only ingredient missing is the baking soda from the list of ingredients on the container of Lulu Organics.
@LadyGoza The whole premise of this particular recipe is to create a bar style shampoo. Oils and butters that are used provide different properties, like moisture, softening, etc. Where the dry ingredients could strip some or all of the natural oils, leaving the scalp dry. That being said, I encourage people to experiment and make this recipe their own. The only way to truly discover if it works is by trying it. Give it a go and see what the results are. Best of luck.
I did the recipe and then put it in the freezer and it looked strange but beautiful. Can I defrost it again or will the oils and powders be affected by that?
I'd imagine so, but cocoa butter is a bit more harder than shea which would contribute to the final viscosity of the deodorant. Try a doing a 20-30g test batch to experiment
Sorry for not responding sooner, I've been recovering from a serious slip and fall accident that left me hospitalized for a month in late October. I've been recovering ever since. To answer your question, no this is not an antiperspirant but a deodorant. Antiperspirants clog the pores of the sweat glands which are meant to help remove toxins from your body. This deodorant helps eliminate the odor caused from sweating.
avoid antiprespirants; they are full of chemicals and the armpit is very close to the breast so u dont want breast cancer eh!! if you sweat a lot then eat an alkaline diet ie 60% raw fruits n veggies 10% meat (no more) 25% starch and 5% other (oils or desserts etc). avoid dairy alcohol or sugar as much as possible and of course smokes/vapes/drugs etc. this will drastically reduce any body odor and sweat.
You could probably not use the beeswax and it will come out as a paste instead, but if you find the consistency is too runny add a small amount of melted wax.
This may be a dumb question, but it this deodorant suitable for men? Strength to minimize odor with moderate to extreme activity? Will it last 12 hours? 24 hours?
It’s not a dumb question at all. Yes, it’s made for men and women. Including a few drops of Tea Tree essential oil to the formula will help reduce the bacteria that causes the odour. It should last the day, but I’ve never tested it in extreme physical activities. The only thing you can do is test it by seeing how much activity it can handle. Sorry I can’t give you a definitive answer on that.
Bentonite clay is a great detoxifier and it absorbs like crazy, which means it will soak up the sweat. It shouldn’t cause any issues, but could be a little abrasive for delicate pits.
Thank you for your comment. The zinc oxide, depending on how much you apply, can leave a white cast on your skin and around the pit area of clothes. If you want to eliminate the zinc, it can change the effectiveness of the deodorant, but that’s a personal decision. Cut back on the zinc oxide to around 2 g and add more kaolin clay, arrowroot powder or combination of the two. The whole idea is for you to play around with the ingredients to suit your needs and likes. 😊
You can use baking soda or add equivalent amounts of Kaolin clay. It will change the end results a bit, but shouldn’t be hugely different. Play around with it and make it your own. 😊
Although vitamin E is an excellent ingredient with some similar properties as castor oil, vitamin E doesn’t provide the slip that castor oil does. If you want to experiment, give it a try. If you are happy with the results, great.
@@mayflylife I did the recipe and then put it in the freezer and it looked strange but beautiful. Can I defrost it again or will the oils and powders be affected by that?
@@ythripatia4806 Freezing can cause some butters and oils to become grainy. Cocoa butter for example needs to be melted slowly and cooled quickly to prevent a grainy texture. It may turn out to be fine once thawed however.

@@mayflylife @Georgette Etourneaux Did you find a just-right recipe? I am having a hard time finding info on subbing bentonite for the kaolin AND arrowroot, as I don't have either and have already spent a lot to get good ingredients. Do I need to add more or less oil or wax when using bentonite in place of it? Also, do I just the same weight exactly of clay, or are it's absorption properties so much stronger that I should use less? Also, I am using zinc ricinoleate and magnesium hydroxide as my active ingredients instead of zinc oxide (though I also have zinc oxide). After researching, it seems that it is the ricinoleate form of zinc that actually plays the better role in deodorizing more than the oxide, as that is more of a protector (sunscreen, rash cream, etc). But all of the recipes I am finding aren't listing an actual amount to use as they are from popular brands and sales.
@@annehill2474 Hi Anne, bentonite clay is heavier than the more gentle kaolin clay, I would probably use less bentonite as it sucks up moisture incredibly well.
