This is the best music theory video I've ever watched. This is a concept I've aurally identified so many times and never been able to pin down exactly what they're doing!
The background music of this video is very underrated! Whenever he talks about a 251 or shows a 251 on the screen, the wurli plays some form of a 251, very clever!
i love how you synchronised the chords in the BGM with what you were saying, hitting that "destination chord" in the script while a progression resolves to I is amazing
In the volleyball analogy, I actually think of the "spike" as the dominant chord, which forces the sound to the next team. They will respond by "bumping" on the I of the spike, and then setup a new offensive maneuver, with a "set" on a ii chord, and "spike" with the V to yet another chord. The insight here is the the "bump" is a response to the previous "spike", while the "set" and "spike" is a new attack (chord).
Just I'm studing how to solo over chords using different scales I watch this video, and finding that creating "invisibles II V I", or ii° V I, is a one remarkable idea. Thanks!
In addition to the ii chord being m7(♭5) in a ii-V targeting a minor chord, the V chord is also usually 7(♭9♭13), for the exact same reason: Take the minor target scale and make it a have a Dominant V chord, and the resultant chord scale has a ♭9 and a ♭13.
Dude your content is amazing, you always find a way to make things easier and acessible! I'm sure theres a lot of people like me that can't afford music lessons or isn't in a place with good instructors, so your content is like pure music gold. Thank you man, you're make a hella difference in these though times
Thanks for a great video! quick question tho - how do you comp with it? do you create a pedal point by just playing the original chords or do you actually play 251? I know it wouldn't be an "invisible" if chord players played 251 but just curious if the line based on tritone subs work with the original chords too.
Sensei 🔥🔥🔥: U’ve bumped up your editing game to new heights 👀🎯🤩!!! BTW: still hoping u might come round to dissecting the intro to D’Angelo’s “Really Love”. Am dipping in and out of the first video you did on the chords . Figuring out the solo by ear is quite tough... thx for opening up music to me in so many ways, Jeff !! 🙏🏿
Bro, Mr. Jeff Schneider. Haven't seen you in like 5 yrs when i used to watch your videos, GTCU again 😊 But I was wondering if you can do those LOOP OF THE DAY progressions on keys, that would be great!! 🙏🙏 I MISS THOSE, THOSE WERE DOPE!! 😂😂
J. Schneider has got to be the best content creator out there for any and all musicians trying to improve (which is hopefully everyone!). He communicates the theory and concepts so simply, that you can pragmatically use it in your practice routine and eventually your performances. Phenomenal and unreal work. Thanks for all the help, and keep it up!
Great stuff. Question: Gm7 to Dbm7 isn't technically a tritone sub (same inverted function with the 3rd and 7th scale degrees, but not tritones), but it's still a common sub . Do you know what the precise definition of this sub is? Also agree with the commenter below about "picking an audience".
1:47. soooooo, the ii is the supertonic diatonically, right? But, you are saying that it is functioning as the or a pre-dominant based on this (very common) usage in the progression?
Jeff - very nice "to the point" summary on cadencing to any destination major (or 7th) or minor chord during a solo. Thank you. BTW - is there a RUclips rule when using a segment of a movie? Jerry @ London, Canada (I was enrolled in the 2021 Jazz Summit)
Is tonicization different from changing the key in the middle of the piece, then going back to the original key? Sorry I'm new to music theory and all of my knowledge are just from my own effort of reading texts and playing the piano (not so good on that lol) and watching videos like this.
Dont kno if you consider this late comment,, Imagine i am playing a progression, i play a particular chord, eg G/B or any and the 5 of the key is D Mjor, how can i select the best sounding chord color of D, like Dadd9 or any.. i just wana hv an idea about chord selection
The production quality is outstanding
Seriously knocked it out of the park with this one
Wow. Virtuoso level teaching and production, bravo! It's been awesome to watch these videos evolve over a few years.
Thanks, Ryan!
This is the best music theory video I've ever watched. This is a concept I've aurally identified so many times and never been able to pin down exactly what they're doing!
loving the editing style!
I heard of tritone substitution twice this week, time to learn it!
Big name for easy concept. No panic !!
The basics are easy but its proper application not so.
Brilliant! I feel like I hear this all the time in solos but didn't know what they were doing.
the editing for the video is incredible
The background music of this video is very underrated! Whenever he talks about a 251 or shows a 251 on the screen, the wurli plays some form of a 251, very clever!
man im lovin this editing style bruh

Damn the quality is out of this world!
Okay, that "bump, set, spike" bit got me pretty good.
"II V is the journey. I is the destination." Mujas grajas for that one.
Jeff you are as gifted a teacher as you are a player. This video illuminated a lot for me, thank you!
Amazing to me that this content is free. Fantastic information and presentation.

This is the best RUclips video I have ever seen. To the point. Production great, so so so descriptive. And even a Memento Cameo!
Yay a Jeff video!

Ik everyone's talking about the graphics but this video was just genuinely helpful. Like hearing the licks back to back really drove the plot home
Thanks, Aaron! Glad it was helpful :)
Very cool how the chords change during the groove depending on which chord you're talking about at that moment.
A ridiculously clear and well presented explaination! Thank you for taking the time to make and post this!
Thanks, Alex!
I LOVE your analogies!!!

The best presentation of music material. Listo para estudiar!
The quality of this video shows an amazing improvement, plus I love that approach of tonicization!
Very brief and helpful. Great video!

Cool concept
This is over my head (and that's not a complaint - I am beginner) but it is so awesomely presented that it is inspiring and I am learning. Thank you.
Beautiful graphics and video edit and well explained and useful musical content. I loved it
This is all great!
This video made me go wow music theory but also go wow editing

This is soooooo gooooood!
Thanks for the lesson ,but none of the PDF or audio files open for me at all.
This video is amazing! Thank you sm 💖
Thank you for this brilliant content. Does the person accompanying you need to adapt what he is playing in this case?
Nope!
Weirdly some channels seem to have saturated their subscriber count although their content and production quality keeps rising
Very useful lesson and analogies 😂. thanks Jeff 😉
That was a great video, Jeff. Thank you !
I dig Vox-ish videoproduction
Jeff being Jeff! always great!
Wow great content

is the Sick licks pdf also offered for Bb trumpet?

3:26 "tonicization?" I thought for sure you were going to say 'secondary dominant' here? Do you see some differences?

Where to buy your books? 😊
How did you get the Vox editors to make this video for you
4:47 if you have to think about this lick on E half-dim / A7 / Dm would you think it as D harmonic minor changing to Dm or A phrygian dominant?
Would this idea be the same as a secondary dominant, but just including a ii in front of it to make the ii V I?
I think secondary dominants tend to not be 'invisible' and typically V/II, V/V or V/VI in diatonic progressions - blues not so much.
I just got the free 36 licks and realized i don't know how to read sheet music. Great video thanks
