How To Recycle Roller Blinds DIY | The Carpenter's Daughter

- Hi everyone,
Last week, I got a quote of £67 for a blind I liked for my tiny kitchen window. I thought that was expensive, so I found an old blind at my local jumble sale for £1.50.
It wasn't the right so, didn't have any fittings and I wasn't keen on the fabric, so I nipped to a fabric shop and picked a pattern I really liked.
I've found some Ripstop fabric and it was PERFECT for my project! Why? Because it's light, it's strong, sturdy,, thick and anti-fray meaning it gave clean, sharp, professional cuts without the need to hem.
No, this is NOT a sponsored post - I just found the fabric ideal for the job and overall, it was easy and cost £17.65 to make. I saved almost £50 for an evening's work. I'm blooming proud and love it!

You can also get this thing no idea the name but you put it where you want to see between the two fabrics and iron the thing melts into a glue type thing where the fabric is combined and you don’t have to wait at all it seals straight away brilliant stuff to have if you’re sewing a lot or using fabric 🙂

I have six windows in my breakfast room with old roller blinds on them that need replacing. Reviews for anything in my budget were terrible. Suddenly it occurred to me that I may be able to just recover the current rollers. I searched for a video and came across yours. Excellent tutorial! The suggestion of "rip stop" fabric is a great idea. Thank you so much!

Thanks for your advice on this, especially the rotary cutter and Copydex tips. I don't have an Omnigrid, so I pinned my fabric to a wall and used my cross line laser to make a perfect rectangle. Bit extreme but it got the job done!

Heavy duty double sided is another glue option.
Ripstop fabric...Yes! Genius! I had notions of recovering the roller blinds in our new (to us) but very dated house (think 1960s decor) as a super budget quick fix until I figure out exactly what I want to do in all the different rooms but I never thought of using ripstop. Tip: to keep ripstop from fraying you can cut it with a soldering iron/hot knife. Here in the states you can get them for less than $5 and I use mine to cut everything synthetic that frays like nuts, ie, chiffon, ripstop, etc. Thank you SO much!

Brilliant video, just what I was looking for! I'm repurposing our study as my daughter's bedroom and when I'd cleared it out, I found the existing roller blind was mouldy :(. I've got a large blackout blind which sticks on with suckers but it's too big for this small window, so I'm going to cut it to size and use the fixings from the old blind, I just wasn't sure how to stick it to the roller at the top. I'm less daunted and more excited to get started now, many thanks!

The Carpenter's Daughter Thanks! It went really well, cutting was tricky as the material is black and I couldn't find my tailor's chalk so it was hard to mark it out, but got there in the end and it looks fab! Really pleased to have saved myself the cost of a new blind, many thanks again!

I have a vintage folding caravan with six roller blinds that need revamping. Rip stop is the answer to my dilemma and your video helped me choose that method.
One question, where did you find the lovely rip stop? I've searched the Internet without much success so any ideas would be very welcome.
So glad it helped! You can buy ripstop on Amazon, but I've since found out myself that you have to be very careful regarding the weight. The one I used in this video was from a shop and it was roughly 300-400gsm.
I bought a 60 gram per square metre one for this awning and had a surprise how light and thin it was if you want to eye it up and compare. I personally would go to a fabric shop and if they don't have any in, see if they can order some in especially. There are ripstop fabric stores online, but I went with Amazon as it's easier to buy from there:

I'm just taking down by bathroom roller blind of 20 years and reusing the kit to make a new blind to match the new bedroom curtains as its an ensuite bathroom. Have got the fabric ready and done the hem to put the plastic pole in the bottom . I have bought some stiffner liquid and trying to work out if it should be applied on the front or back of the material with a new paintbrush.? Another You Tube tutorial showed using a paintbrush and then a rolling pin to make sure no bubbles and evenly spread so using a china rolling pin that will clean easily after use rather than my usual wooden one. thanks for tip about copydex as I was wondering what to use to fix the material to the top. Thanks for your video love the roller blind. I purchased a roller blind and its the wrong colour! So i guess i can change the shade like you did. Dont know if its glued yet but learning that this is possible thanks so much

Just wondered i have cream blinds which are looking grubby. Could I just stick another fabric on top of them of should I actually remove the original and start fresh. Thank you in advance.

I thought this was a roller blind with tension that just rolls up with a pull at the bottom and you let it go and it rolls up. This is considered a drawstring blind...but great idea..thank you for sharing
I picked up a cheap roller blind from Walmart. The one that's spring loaded. I'll try what you're doing. Difference is I'd like to attach my fabric right to the vinyl blind material. Would filter light a little more. Did you ever try that ? Just don't know how to attach the material to the Vinyl blind !

Lol, I'd actually enjoy it. I do have to cover 13 metres of windows around my conservatory soon so looks like I'll be busy for a while though lol.
In case you need to make any more blinds, you can also get spring-loaded roller blind tubes at the craft/sewing shop which don't need chains & extra hardware. Much like the tube you took out of the old blind (but usually made of strong cardboard), they come with the spring parts already fitted into the ends, a self-adhesive strip down the length & 2 little brackets. You assemble them just like this one too :) I've made a few with bits of blockout curtain fabric that cost next to nothing from the remnants section in curtain makers & fabric shops.

How do I know that I need 25mm and 32mm roller blind fitting kit because I have the old roller blind without fitting kit.

+Tariek Salim I would look in 2nd hand, car boot or skip shops. Have a look on eBay for a full kit?. A 25mm or similar metal pipe (whatever the fixture is - can't remember size) should work. Some are even made out of thick card.

This is clear as daylight apart from how to find the material! You actually say ripstop fabric that can be used for air balloons! And in the comments that you found it at your local craft shop. It all sounds rather unlikely, but I did a search and can't find anything online that seems to be similar. Anyone?!
Hi, are you based in the UK? If so, you can see some here (ukfabricsonline.com/waterproof-fabric/waterproof-ripstop), but I'd avoid the cheapest ones as they're very thin (see my canopy video... I bought that on Amazon and nearly returned it for a refund). Alternatively, see if a fabric shop can advise and order any in. My local fabric shop at the time had LOADS in and based in Hinckley.
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK Hi, thanks for reply, hmm, well I've been chasing the material but it doesn't give much variety in terms of patterns etc so back to the drawing board! I think I remember buying some spray ages ago that makes material non-fraying so I may go down that route, or give up and buy the expensive ready mades. Ah well you can't win em all, Happy Easter :)

Mine was from a local fabric shop called The Sewing Cafe in Hinckley. It seems to be a specialist thing, so maybe it might be best if you can see if a local one to you can order some in. I had a look on ebay and could only find small sizes. It's brilliant stuff!

But you didn't make a saving because it took you time to make it. Basically you didnt oay yourself for making it. That is what the professional who quoted you would pay themselves: labour, tools, materials etc.
We'll have to agree to disagree. It didn't take more than 2 hours and I already had the tools. Also, it depends how much someone's time is worth.
