Thanks for the posting this! H.E.R. is my absolute favorite artist and it's so hard to find any worthwhile tutorials. You totally made my day with how accurate, professional, and complete this lesson was! So attractive and talented! #subscribed
You're the man for posting this tutorials man!! I had been looking for a good tutorial of "Hard Place"! Thanks for the hard work and the time you take for the videos 😄😁 Bless up bro 👊🏾👊🏾💯
Congratulations, thank you very much...... I was finding the chords about Focus but.... I didn't get the right position, I noticed that some chords .....didn't play right; your version is perfect!!!! thanks
Bruh these chords are so complex! Do you think these songs were written on the guitar or piano? Thanks for making this tutorial and helping me get better
Paige Shephard it seems like HER mainly plays guitar, so they were probably written on guitar. it’s also likely that she wrote it one way and had other musicians influence the harmony (like a musical director for this performance)
@@NastySoulGuitarLessons Thanks! I also just wanted to tell you that these chords are helping me write my own music. Sometimes we don't realize the impact we have on others online but we do!
Hey bro first and foremost hello 👋, this is my first time on your channel. Secondly, I just discovered H.E.R for the first time as well a little while ago on the Grammy’s and caught her performance of Hard Place. Instantly I was intrigued by the chord progression and ran to grab my guitar. Figuring out the progression was easy but I’m having a hard time understanding what it is. The tonal center is E major but E doesn’t have a B minor, also if you play her melodic lines you’ll find a flattened 7th in it as well, so wouldn’t it be easier to think of it as the key of A(since there’s a b minor and an E major in it) but emphasizing the E major?? Sorry for bombarding you bro but I’m scratching my head over here lol.
Alexander Torres this is definitely in E major. The A chord is felt as a IV resolving to I (E). E maj Pent scale to solo would sound great. (a major not so much, try yourself see what your ear tells you). The b7 of E you hear would specifically make the key E Mixolydian, which is the same as A major, but what you treat as the tonic note is crucial. so i just say key of E Major to start
jhillgrooves Thank you for the response, I appreciate it. I see what you’re saying. So is it safe to say the song has a Mixolydian vibe because of that B note? Once again thank you for shedding some light..... I’m at a point where so many doors are being unlocked at the same time and I’m just trying to make sense of all this new information that my ear is processing.
Alexander Torres for sure. What makes it Mixolydian is the D note (which makes the B chord Minor instead of BMajor in the Key of E Major) *E Mixo is still a Major Key tho
jhillgrooves Nice!! Man it’s funny how life works..... I’ve been struggling with modes for a long time and then all of a sudden while watching the Grammy’s a lightbulb goes off! Her song “fate” also has a certain modal quality as well. Reminds me of Michael Jackson, has a Dorian vibe if I’m not mistaken.
Wow man you're incredible! Thank you so much for the in depth tutorial. Just came across your channel and I must say you are killing it my guy! I wish to play like you someday. I'm looking to buy a electric guitar soon and was wondering if you had any recommendations for around $500.
Leighton Brady hey thank you. I’ve done others and will definitely be doing more. So far I have Mac Millers, Tom Misch and Cautious Clay from tiny desk
@@NastySoulGuitarLessons Awesome I will check those out! If you take request I have a few! Kahlid- Location and/or Young Dumb and Broke, Adele- Chasing Pavements, any song from the Phoenix set! Anyway, thanks- keep up the good vids!
Cannnnnn u not just play these songs without the tutorial?? Omg I love them!! I was actually singing along to your ‘focus’ tutorial part lol please do it!!!
It LOOKS like that yes. BUT, playing the chord with your pinky finger there is actually the same chord (F# is part of the B chord) so that is also correct! Good ear!
Sssoooo coooooool jhill , really thank's you👍👍👍 and what about npr tiny desk concert of hamilton , trampoline of jidenna and jessie ware 😁😎😎 really really thank's 😊👌

that's awesome! thank u
I think the chord diagram for B/D# in focus is not what you are playing, it sounds like you're using your little finger for B string 7th fret ( F#).
It LOOKS like that yes. BUT, playing the chord with your pinky finger there is actually the same chord (F# is part of the B chord) so that is also correct! Good ear!
graaaciaaaasssss
🙌
Wooow! Thank you! Could you maybe do a tutorial for Tems Tiny Desk as well?

Sssoooo coooooool jhill , really thank's you👍👍👍 and what about npr tiny desk concert of hamilton , trampoline of jidenna and jessie ware 😁😎😎 really really thank's 😊👌
I think the first chord in going is (piano) AbDbAb/F
Anyone know a tutorial for the piano in HER's NPR session?
❤
🇧🇷🇧🇷
🌺🌷🌺⭐
😍
👍!
Take that shit and move it down to the seventh @0:55
Couldn't we just consider 'Hard Place' to be a 5-2-1-5 progression in the key of A?
Great but think your b string is flat
