    Note - A version of this trip filmed using a camera mounted on the outside of the cab front window without commentary will be available shortly.
    Almaden takes its name from Almaden in Spain's Cuidad Real province. It is located on the Mareeba to Chillagoe railway line at its junction with the Etheridge line to Forsayth. The remains of the once extensive sidings and the long Island platform indicate that this was once an important location on the Tablelands railways.
    Our train stopped for an hour, giving passengers time to wander over to the Railway Hotel for something to eat and drink, after which there was still time to visit the station museum and take photographs of the station with its substantial water tower.
    With departure time approaching passengers returned to their seats and our drivers/guides checked we were all aboard as the diesel engines were started ready for the next leg of our journey to Dimbulah. The scenery on this part of our journey was more varied than that experienced on the Etheridge line as we had three ranges to cross before the landscape became less barren as we entered the fertile plains irrigated by Mareeba-Dimbulah irrigation scheme taking water from the Tinaroo Dam. Our guides explained how the area had once been home to tobacco plantations that began to struggle as smoking went out of fashion when the health issues related to smoking became better known, some of the farmers used government subsidies to switch to growing limes, avocados, grapes, mangoes and coffee, to name just a few of the alternative crops they turned to.
    The township of Dimbulah (aboriginal word meaning “long waterhole”) grew in significance with the coming of the railway as it became a locomotive servicing point for trains to Mareeba and Chillagoe, it was the gateway to the Hodgkinson Goldfield, also contributing to the towns importance was the Wolfram tungsten mine and the Mount Mulligan coal mine.
    Our train drew into the tiny platform at Dimbulah where the “Dimbulah Historical Society” put on refreshments for passengers, there was also a small museum and shop selling books about the railways and surrounding area.

      Hi, it's nice to know you are enjoying this series of videos covering a railway I knew almost nothing about. The whole area is fascinating, it rarely features on TV, it's nice to discover new places and landscapes. The scenery changes dramatically in the last two episodes as the railway enters the tropical rain forest before leaving the plateau to drop down to the coast.

      Hello, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. The commentary from the drivers was interesting, explaining why the railway was built and the purpose it serves today. “Will” one of the drivers was a zoo keeper before he became a Savannlander driver, his love of wildlife came over in his commentary making it all the more interesting to listen to.

    Thank you for the sixth part. Beautiful day and generally the same type of vegetation appears, with a little surprise at 28mn. But there are some changes. Hills approach the track, roads with perfect pavement.cross us, animals are seen (1.23.25), a wreck of a double-decker bus also, as well as fields of cultivation. But it is civilization that returns.

      Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I'm glad the driver stopped before our train before we hit the rock at 28:05 If only that bus could talk, I bet it led an interesting life, when its public transport days were over, it was probably used as an oversize camper van before finally becoming a summer house. The scenery at the end of the video was very different from that at the beginning.

    Thank you, Tim. I reckon this by far the best part of your series (in Qld) to date: including the commentary - especially the commentary. From rocks on the ‘road’ to a disertaion on farming dynamics in the tablelands, via the possibility of various visitors who may have made the journey. Interesting and dynamic.
    Thanks again for these glimpses of marginal places in excessive heat and the ‘can do’ attitude of the incomers who moved from tobacco to limes etc..

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  4 месяца назад +1

      Hello Peter, this leg of our journey contains the most varied scenery and I agree also the most interesting commentary so far. It's nice to know a little about the history of the places the train passes through, all the old mining towns, the long gone logging industry, replaced by tobacco farming, which in turn was replaced with fruit farming. If ever I get the opportunity, I'd love to go back to the little museums, there is one in most towns, run by various historical societies, the photographs of how it used to be are fascinating and the odd thing is when I look at the dates, many were taken during my lifetime and it is then that I realise that some of my school mates who emigrated to Oz as £10 poms might well have ended up in these places. I will make a video or two covering the non railway aspects of this journey. Australia is a fascinating country.

      Es agradable visitar lugares que no se parecen a ningún otro lugar en el que haya estado y ver la amable vida salvaje que normalmente tendría que visitar en un zoológico, como canguros, ualabíes y pájaros de colores brillantes. Hello Robert, I visit my cousin in Brisbane and he and his wife are only aware of these places through my videos. They travel a lot, visiting the UK and Europe when visiting family back home, they also love Tasmania and regularly visit Port Douglas for canoeing holidays. I have seen more of New Zealand and Australia than 90% of the people who live there. Here on the South Coast of the UK most people regard North of the River Thames as another planet, a place they have no interest in visiting because it is sometimes wet and cold, yet they take holidays all over the world, they don't know what they are missing, the North of England, Wales and Scotland are some of the most scenic places in the world. I would not have known about the wonderful railway journeys of Queensland had I not sat on Roma Street station in Brisbane, one of the few places I've seen these wonderful railway journeys advertised. Most of Australia is a mystery to people in the UK, sure we have TV programs such as "Wanted Down Under", but all you get to see is sunny beaches and housing estates, some of Australia's most iconic trains are featured occasionally, but it's always the same very expensive train rides such as the Ghan or the Indian Pacific.
      The Savannalander is so much more than a train ride, it's living history, where else is it possible to learn so much about Queensland, it's mines, it's wildlife, the Lava Tubes and the river gorges. I was trying to book my next trip to Oz yesterday, but I hit a problem, one of the railways I was planning to visit "the Wilderness Railway" on Tasmania is carrying out maintenance work to its tracks. I will wait until it is fully up and running before booking anything.
      Most of the passengers on the Savanalander and the Gulflander were Australian, many of them having done the trip more than once. I would like to think that a few people who might not have even known about these trains without watching these videos will be inspired to make enquiries and hopefully book their own trip, because that will help to ensure the long term future of these railways and the prosperity tourists bring to towns served by the Savannahlander and the Gulflander. Time for beer, All the best from a wet and windy UK.

    Tremendous, mammoth effort . . .this series of videos. Very well done.
    I find the commentary illuminating, particularly this one. I find it very interesting how other people live and deal with their environment.
    This is so much more engaging than the usual paroqhial fare dished-out ad-nauseum on UK TV,
    Its a big country . . . . with a near moonscape environment in this part of Queensland. . . . with only a thin coastal fringe being usefully "Habitable" . . . . one wonders how this bit of Australia might be transformed by pumped desalinated sea water courtesy of a few acres of solar cells . . .space and sunshine being plentiful.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  4 месяца назад

      Hello Nicholas, this series is taking up all of my spare time, but it is an enjoyable way to re-live a wonderful experience. Travel has taught me a lot about other people and also their perception of my home country (England). I no longer trust mainstream TV to tell it how it is, especially when it comes to India where the British are loved and well respected, contrary to what some TV stations would have you believe. They have a wonderful make do and mend mindset in the Australian Outback, they don't really have a choice and in New Zealand they have a saying - "give a man a length of No.8 wire and he has a complete toolbox in his hand". There are some awesome RUclips creators who just point a camera without any kind of political bias, they just show it as it is, such as this young lady, I really admire her for what she does - www.youtube.com/@littlechineseeverywhere Most Australians live in the big cities or along the coastal strip where the standard of living is generally pretty good. There is plenty of water under the tablelands, a good deal of it is flooded for a couple of months a year, but the level of the water table is critical as is mentioned in one of the videos. Windmills are used to pump water up from the artesian wells to water the cattle, but this affects the water table which in turn causes rivers that once ran 365 days a year to dry up with devastating consequences for everything that lives in or drinks from the river. Queensland has huge open cast coal mines, especially around Emerald on the line out to Longreach, if you are interested type "Emerald" into Google Earth, then follow the branch lines off the main line to the coast to see the extent of the open cast coal mines. Along the coast there is sugar cane, cattle, all kinds of fruit and veg as well as cotton a little inland. Australia has more natural resources than anywhere else that I'm aware off. Travel is the best form of education, employers should look out for people who have travelled, because they know stuff that can't be learned at university, they are capable and they have learned how to communicate. I didn't see the sun harvested much in Australia, just a few windmills. Take care. Tim.

    Dimbulah - If this is the same place I'm thinking of, sometimes it's spelled "Dimboolah". There was a comical story written about the place and also, I believe, a comedy movie based on that story that had Chad "Sheik Of Scrubby Creek" Morgan in the cast.
